A family known as "America's most inbred family" began with identical twin brothers, whose children went on to produce several generations of descendants who could only communicate through grunts and barks.
The Whittaker family resides in the village of Odd, West Virginia, in a small, cluttered home located 75 miles from Charleston. Their story gained widespread attention after filmmaker Mark Laita released a documentary in 2020, exposing their complicated history and struggles with complex needs.
The family had previously faced cruel comments and unwelcome visitors, prompting their protective neighbours to guard them with shotguns. They rarely allow outsiders to enter their home or interact with new people, which is why Mark spent over 16 years building a relationship with them after first visiting their mobile home in 2004.

Mark was initially met with a chaotic scene when he first encountered the family, with several members running, screaming, and barking in his direction. He described the encounter as the "craziest thing" he had ever witnessed, likening it to a scene from the 1972 thriller Deliverance, where a group of friends are stalked and terrorised by locals in the woods.
On the Koncrete KLIPS podcast, he described a surreal scene: "We came around to this road, which turns into a country road, which turns into a dirt road, and we come to this trailer and then a little shack on the other side of the road. And there's these people walking around and their eyes are going in different directions and they are barking at us.", reports the Mirror.

"And then one guy, you would look at him in the eye or say anything and he would just scream and go running away, and his pants would fall around his ankles, and he would go running off and go and kick a garbage can. And this would happen over and over. It was out of control - the craziest thing I have ever seen."
Inbreeding within the family began with identical twins Henry and John Whittaker marrying their own children off to each other, producing over a dozen grandchildren. Henry wed Sally and together they had seven kids, including a son named John Emory Whittaker in 1913.
His brother John tied the knot with Ada Riggs, who was also his first cousin, and together they had nine children, among them Gracie Irene Whittaker born in 1920. John and Gracie, double first cousins sharing both sets of grandparents, decided to marry in 1935, eventually having 15 children of their own.
Many of the offspring suffered from pronounced physical and mental disabilities, believed to be the result of their deeply entwined family tree. The family's eldest, Aileen, left this world in June 1997 following a heart attack and the firstborn son, Emery, passed shortly after birth in 1938 due to pneumonia.
Betty, born in 1952, has assumed the role of family matriarch, vowing to remain unmarried so as to care for her 14 siblings, following a promise to her mother. Her commitment is part of the unique dynamic of the Whittaker clan, which includes Ray and Lorene, parents to Timmy, born in 1979, who despite their inability to communicate conventionally – resorting to grunts and barks – have raised a high school graduate.
Delving into the family's unique communication, a relative was quoted saying: "They understand what you talking about. If they don't like it, they start yelling - let you know they don't like that idea."
The Whittakers are also known for their distinctive tradition of crafting their own concrete headstones; an ode which exempts only their mother, Gracie, who has a professionally made one. Despite their self-sufficiency, sometimes outside help becomes necessary.
Mark, a relative, came back on scene in 2022 with a follow-up GoFundMe campaign. The fundraiser racked up $55,000 (£44,000), allowing the family to invest in a new truck, roof, kitchen refit and a coal heater.
Yet hardship struck once more when their home was ravaged by flames last year, forcing them to shift back across the street into a modest abode. A fresh fundraising effort was launched aimed at clearing fire debris, transferring, and setting up a new mobile home, along with furnishing it, ensuring all donations will directly aid the Whittaker family.
The fundraiser sparked a mixed reaction from YouTube viewers, with one commenter saying: "All that Go Fund Me money better not even go to any family member! Give it directly to a clean up crew and you purchase a new trailer for them! ! ! ! No money should ever be given to them again."

Lesley Riddoch launches crowdfunder for Finland documentary

The film has already secured funding of £5000, with Riddoch hoping to raise the final £8000 to make the project a reality. Finland has been ranked the world's happiest country for eight years in a row, with Riddoch and young Scots filmmaker Gavin Hanigan, who is based in Helsinki, hoping to look at the parallels the country has with Scotland. Riddoch has previously made documentaries about Norway, Faroes, Iceland, Estonia and Denmark. READ MORE: UK providing 'political cover' for US and Israel after Iran attack The Denmark documentary now has 1.7 million views online. The documentary would be made available on YouTube. Within just a few days of being live, the crowdfunder has raised just over £750. In the crowdfunder, Riddoch explains: 'Do we know enough about the world's most successful societies? I don't think so. 'The Nordics are the happiest, most sustainable, most equal, democratic, literate societies on earth, yet remain remarkable mostly for their high beer prices. What a travesty. (Image: Lesley Riddoch) 'So, I've spent more than a decade running the policy group Nordic Horizons, writing book and paper articles, making podcasts and films to let countries in the doldrums (like the UK) see how we might get onto a Nordic path.' She adds that there are 'huge parallels' between Scotland and Finland. 'Finland quietly excels in education - something Scotland was once renowned for,' Riddoch wrote. 'The Finns like the Scots sometimes lack confidence, but their way of life is more equal, digital, cooperative, equal and relaxed than almost anywhere else on earth. Scotland rightly prides itself on having the lowest levels of child poverty in the UK at 22 per cent – the figure in Finland is 3.7 per cent.' READ MORE: Douglas Alexander refuses to set out route to Scottish independence Riddoch adds: 'So in the dog-eat-dog, adversarial days of Donald Trump, I'd guess the world might want to know more about the happy, equal, educated and slightly awkward Finns. 'This documentary is already part funded. If we can raise another £8000 we can make it happen, start filming in September 2025, show the film around Scotland and put it online for everyone by Christmas with gigs around Scotland if Yes groups fancy.' Riddoch told The National: 'The current situation with Russia highlights Finland's enduring problem of having to coexist with an occasionally belligerent, acquisitive former colonial power as the nearest neighbour. 'Anyone who has read the history of Finnish resistance during World War II will realise that a country with half its population volunteering to join an army that became the only one to ever repel the Red Army, will be no pushover. 'Today Finns like Gavin live with bunkers in the cellars of their houses and grab bags ready at the instruction of their government in case of attack. 'And yet their lives are relaxed, orderly, and chilled.' Those who choose to donate to the crowdfunder can get an early access film preview link and other benefits. She revealed they have gone their separate ways. Stephanie also told followers she's now raising Samuel as a single parent, but didn't give details about the reason for the split. Romeo Beckham's ex Kim Turnbull delivers savage dig after split and family rift

Romeo Beckham's ex Kim Turnbull, who he split from earlier this year amid rumours of a rift in his family, has opened up about dealing with being in the spotlight Kim Turnbull has opened up about being in the spotlight after making headlines over her relationship with Romeo Beckham. Her latest comments come after it was revealed that the former couple had split up just weeks ago. It was announced earlier this month that Kim, 25, had separated from Romeo, 22, after seven months together. It was suggested that they were on good terms though, with a source telling the Mirror at the time: "They split a few weeks ago and it's all amicable and they are still friends." ‌ The news of their break-up came amid ongoing rumours of tension in his family. Kim's relationship with Romeo - who is the son of Victoria Beckham and David Beckham - was previously blamed for the alleged rift in recent months. ‌ Amid the rumours earlier this year, it was suggested that Kim had once been romantically linked to Romeo's brother Brooklyn Beckham, 26. It's previously been reported that in a now-deleted post, youngest brother Cruz Beckham, 20, said the pair "never dated" and Kim is since understood to have herself dismissed the suggestion in a statement. Kim has addressed dealing with the attention in an interview with the Sunday Times, published this week. The interview is said to have taken place just hours after the news of the DJ's split from model Romeo broke just a few weeks ago. Speaking about dealing with being in the spotlight, Kim suggested that it is expected. She continued: "There are situations that you find yourself in that present you with new aspects, but at the same time I think it has always been something that I've been around and seen, so I just take it day by day and try to focus on the positives." She added: "Sometimes it's difficult to block things out because a lot of the time there are things said that are not necessarily true or necessarily positive, and your instinctive reaction is to want to be like, no, that's not true!" Kim said she's however learned to try to "take it with a pinch of salt". Kim said: "It's definitely tough, whatever it is, when people are saying things about you that aren't necessarily true and, most importantly in my opinion, don't align with your character and your values." She said that despite sometimes wanting to, "you just can't" reply to every comment. ‌ The new article comes after Kim appeared to dismiss the suggestion that she had ever dated Brooklyn following the rumours. As reported at the time, she addressed speculation in a post on Instagram earlier this month. In the post, she wrote: "I've avoided speaking on this topic to prevent adding fuel to the fire, however it's come to a point where I feel the need to address it so I can move on. I will not continue to receive harassment or be embarrassed on the basis of lies, to fit a certain narrative." ‌ She then seemingly addressed the speculation that she once dated Brooklyn, who is Romeo's older brother. She said: "I have never been romantically involved in ANY capacity at ANY point with the person in question." Kim went on to tell fans: "Nothing between us has occurred further than a school friendship at age 16. I would like to remove myself from the ongoing conversation and set the record straight for the sake of everyone involved." TMZ had previously suggested that she once had a romantic connection to Brooklyn, but said it was "all water under the bridge". Amid rumours of a family rift, the outlet reported that sources said the issue was over Brooklyn and his wife Nicola Peltz, 30, questioning whether Kim had "the right intentions" for dating his younger brother Romeo. When it was announced that Kim had split from Romeo, the Daily Mail reported that their relationship had "fizzled out". The outlet suggested that the break-up was "nothing to do" with her being blamed for the alleged family rift, with a source instead saying that Kim and Romeo were simply both "busy" with work and each did "lots of travelling".
