‘Digimon Story: Time Stranger' Embraces Olympos XII Focus With Digi-Ride Feature & Travel Between Worlds

The vast evolution (pun intended) of the Digimon franchise makes it easy to forget its humble roots as a series of virtual pets, intended as an alternative to Tamagotchi, especially as it started to branch out into a harder-edged style and darker narratives as development progressed over time. But its momentum in the gaming space wouldn't have reached current heights without Digital World , originally released in Japan in 1999, then a year later in the Western world. Boasting a fair share of antiquated quirks and jank, the adventure wouldn't be a good fit for modern audiences, and yet, there's something to be said about its willingness to explore uncharted territory. After all, it was this spirit of experimentation that turned the title into a subseries and kicked off other offshoots, including the Digimon Story games, which have built a reputation for non-linear Digivolution, monster collection, and, more recently, mature storytelling elements. Making a highly anticipated return to the role-playing game (RPG) space is Digimon Story: Time Stranger , coming eight years after Hacker's Memory . The first entry in the series on Xbox and debuting an official English dub, it continues to flesh out established lore across the wide-spanning universe, while tapping into existing elements woven into its core identity. For starters, Olympos XII is now at the front and centre of the upcoming jaunt, allowing the team at to weave a distinctive, fairy tale-flavoured look into the Digital World (or Digi-World), a parallel reality where the Digimon live. 'For this new game, we focused on Olympos XII, so Digimon will play a central role in the story,' shares producer Ryosuke Hara in an exclusive interview held for select Southeast Asian media. 'When we crafted the worldview of the digital world, we paid attention to modelling it after a mythical setting.' The association doesn't come as a surprise, considering the group's etymological connection to Roman and Greek mythos. In Digimon jargon, the Olympos XII refers to 12 Mega-level Deity or Shaman, otherwise known as God Man, Digimon modelled after the Roman version of the 12 Olympians from Greek mythology, which manage the Digital World: Iliad – itself a nod to Homer's classic literary Greek epic – that exists on a different Server from the Digital World ruled by Yggrasill. While Digimon Story: Time Stranger is far from the first to highlight their significance, the Olympos XII focus offers the opportunity to further explore the bond between humans and Digimon, and incorporate new features at the same time. Where artificial cyberspace served as the focal point in its predecessor, the forthcoming entry divides its attention between the real world and Digital World: Iliad, such that its protagonist, an agent of the Special Investigation Bureau ADAMAS, can travel between space and time to solve the mystery behind a city-levelling disaster in Tokyo. As gleaned from a 15-minute hands-on preview, the Digi-World is shaping up to be a promising easter egg hunt for longtime enthusiasts, showcasing a crowded marketplace teeming with Digimon across various media and designs, from Digimon Tamers ' Terriermon and Gargomon to Devimon, which debuted in the Digimon Adventure anime series, and ToyAgumon. This time, however, the fun doesn't just lie in capturing and collecting critters – in a series first, players will be able to mount Digimon via the Digi-Ride feature and traverse the world at large. 'This came from the perspective of a fan, and I thought it would be good to have such a feature,' says Hara. 'To choose the Digimon for riding, we used an animation where they appeared as reference, and thought about which would be fun to ride on,' he adds, pointing to Beelzemon and Mechanorimon specifically. It remains to be seen if the ability extends to flying Digimon, as only Garurumon could be accessed during the hands-on session. The mechanic worked well enough in practice, despite a stiff quality to turning manoeuvres as opposed to natural movement, with the producer highlighting details like varying the action of getting on and riding, as well as the speeds, for different species. Adding to the shine, Digivolution and Degeneration can now be carried out anywhere, bringing more versatility into the mix-and-match process that welcomes its biggest roster to date. Indeed, there will be plenty of room to toy around here. Digimon Story: Time Stranger boasts a whopping 450 Digimon, all impressively made from scratch. As Hara explains, the team had to build from the skeleton up and 'make thorough changes' to the models that were developed for the PlayStation Vita, to match current console standards. Alongside the visual polish, the difference is also seen in combat, which inherits the series' signature turn-based system founded on a rock-paper-scissors framework. Essentially, certain monsters will be resistant to attacks of specific types and weak to others, presented in the familiar Data, Vaccine, and Virus format. Each Digimon is categorised into one of these three types, and enemies can have either resistance, vulnerability or neither to them. Depending on the Digimon, attacks may include elements or follow-up execution with quick-time event (QTE) elements, where players have to input the corresponding key in time. Three main critters will take to the battlefield, accompanied by three back-ups to swap to mid-fight, and up to three Guest Digimon. Expect 'more depth' for boss battles, too. According to Hara, Digimon Story: Time Stranger includes new attachments equipped with additional skills, allowing players to 'combine the different Digimon with the skills they want to use'. The mash-up of the new and old honours a long-standing tradition that dates back to the franchise's early days, with Hara highlighting how combat comes into play: 'In terms of improvement, we have three different elements – adventure, training, and battle – and these are the constant or unchanging themes of Digimon .' Coming in almost a decade after the previous outing subjects Digimon Story: Time Stranger to another challenge. Returning fans are a given, but the game needs to be accessible for newcomers, especially with its Xbox debut and the rise of new technology in its absence. To that end, it puts players in the same position as the protagonist, who doesn't know anything about the Digi-World and its inhabitants, eliminating the prerequisite of prior understanding. On the flip side, series veterans will appreciate the little tie-ins to lore, starting with Agumon's role in the overarching narrative. 'The reason why we decided to feature Agumon is because he has a very close association with Olympos XII, and I believe those who have been following the series will probably know why we have Agumon appear at this time,' he teases. Digimon Story: Time Story is set to launch for Xbox Series X|S, PS5 and PC on 3 October. Singapore Student Wins Apple's Swift Student Challenge With Focus App Concept, Is Invited To WWDC, Gets Attention Of Tim Cook

Concerned with short attention spans and the need for instant gratification among the younger generation, 16-year-old St. Joseph's Institution student Jatin Rakesh opted to submit a concept app that focuses on keeping people's attention span. What he didn't expect was to not only win Apple's Swift Student Challenge and be among one of 50 Distinguished Winners globally, but he also received an invitation to attend the recently concluded Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), and got noticed by Apple CEO Tim Cook in the process. Jatin Rakesh (top row, 10th from the right) posing next to Apple CEO Tim Cook and fellow Distinguished Winners. 'I wasn't expecting to meet Tim Cook as part of our tour, but was pleasantly surprised when he joined the Distinguished Winners' group photo next to the iconic rainbow arch at Apple Park,' remarked the excited student of his week-long experience visiting Apple Park in Cupertino, California. 'I had butterflies in my stomach when he decided to stand next to me and put his arm around me for the photo! Meeting someone as respected and inspiring as Tim is a true bucket list moment I will never forget.' And he has his mother to thank for this journey, as she was the one who pushed him to start his coding journey, which began when he was just 11 years old, with block coding and subsequently, syntax coding with the help of a private tutor. These two coding structures are concepts that even the average adult will struggle to comprehend, but it was his mother who encouraged him to do so. 'At first, I joined reluctantly,' Jatin recalls, 'but as I went through the stages of coding, I learnt that coding is so much more than clacking keys – it made me realise how it can empower people's lives.' And that empowerment led him towards Apple's Swift Student Challenge, a prestigious international competition that began in 2020 with the goal to support and recognise young coders and their creative ability. His winning concept app was among the 350 winning global submissions for the year, with his exceptional work further earning him an invite to Apple Park. His winning entry, Attention Tractor , is a short story-based simulation game featuring a hamster named Theo who has trouble focusing. The app playground, which refers to conceptual prototypes that are not full apps, includes a series of mini-games alongside its simple narrative that encourage the fostering of positive habits to improve one's attention span, such as setting an early bedtime, exercising active listening, as well as the importance of healthy eating and meditation. Attention Tractor On a personal level, the idea stemmed from wanting to help his generation of peers focus, tackling an apt problem faced by many in this fast-paced digital age of short-form content like 30-second TikToks. It also hit closer to home, of wanting to help his younger sister after witnessing its negative effects first-hand. 'My entry was inspired by the insight that my generation tends to have low attention spans.' he explains, 'With the proliferation of social media, and according to my research, this can negatively impact long-term focus, concentration, and mental health, and can worsen if left unaddressed over time.' 'I also wanted to address this issue because I wanted to see how I could help my younger sister manage her short attention span, as I've seen it affect her in various ways.' Attention Tracor After two previous attempts at participating in the Swift Student Challenge, he took the opportunity to kill two birds with one stone and following two months of hard work, his efforts earned him an all-expenses-paid trip to WWDC 2025, where he made connections with global app creators and shared in their experiences. 'I was able to learn more about accessibility and how the user experience on Apple's ecosystem can make people's lives better.' says the young developer, 'The experience really showed me the diversity of the global developer community and reminded me of what we all have in common – to make people's lives easier and more efficient through code and the apps we create.' 'Being around experienced developers and other Distinguished Winners, we discussed ways to improve our apps, share goals, and learn more from each other about Apple's technologies,' adds the former Kranji Secondary School student, who has quickly taken in the feedback received on his code, along with ideas that have made him rethink how he presents himself and his apps. While studying at Kranji Secondary School, Jatin, along with three of his friends, developed a travel planner app, Journify . 'That's what makes being part of the developer community so amazing – you know you are not alone, and that there will always be other smart people with better capabilities and ideas to help you out, because we all share a vision of using technology to make people's lives better.' While his coding and app creation journey has only just started, Jatin is fast realising that coding can play a big role in his future. 'My passion for coding has continued to grow – programming a website is only bound by my imagination, and the freedom of coding has given my life a whole different meaning and allowed me to get creative.' So, what's next for the budding app developer? For now, exams are his main priority, although he hopes to continue working on Attention Tractor, evolving it from an app playground to a full-fledged app that can benefit countless others. 'There is one thing I'm certain of, though, and that is making a positive impact in another person's life and building apps that help the community benefit and grow. My biggest goal in life is to be a good human being and be remembered as someone who used technology to empower people and help others in their daily lives.' Kevin is a reformed PC Master Race gamer with a penchant for franchise 'duds' like Darksiders III and Dead Space 3 . He has made it his life-long mission to play every single major game release – lest his wallet dies trying. Apple Singapore swift student challenge wwdc WWDC 2025

Set five years after Jurassic World Dominion , the latest chapter trades chaos for something more calculated and contained, but no less dangerous. Earth's ecosystem has rejected dinosaurs as permanent residents. Most survivors now dwell in remote, tropical zones far removed from civilisation. Years of failed experiments have bred horrors like the Distortus rex , a grotesque, six-limbed mutation of the original T. rex. It's part dinosaur, part nightmare, and it doesn't appreciate visitors. Enter Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson, Black Widow ), a covert operative pulled into a high-stakes mission on behalf of a mysterious pharmaceutical giant. She's teamed with paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey, Wicked ) and ex-military leader Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali, Moonlight ) for a mission straight out of a survivalist's worst nightmare. Their goal? Travel to a prohibited island in the Atlantic, the same one that once hosted the original Jurassic Park, and retrieve DNA samples from three of the largest remaining prehistoric species across land, sea, and sky. FAN PREMIERE SCREENING DETAILS Date: 1 July, Tuesday Time: 6:45 pm Location: GV VivoCity Hall 4 (Assigned Seating)
