Investigation after alleged rape of detained woman in PNG
A group of New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) personnel, with two Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) NH90 helicopters, arrived in Honiara on November 14. Military police personnel from Fiji and Papua New Guinea are also present to assist the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force in maintaining security.

Investigation is underway within Papua New Guinea police to determine how a former policeman who served time for rape was allowed to rejoin the police force, only to then allegedly commit another rape at a police station.
The officer was convicted in 2012 and served 14 years.
From initial indications, he may not have been formally dismissed from the force when he was convicted.
He and two other officers are now in custody for the alleged rape of a woman who was detained.
This incident has raised significant concerns about the the constabulary's recruitment and vetting processes, especially given previous calls for greater accountability and professionalism within the force.
Police Commissioner David Manning has indicated that the focus is now on ensuring the individual is returned to prison.

Levin fire: Man charged with arson

The Cambridge Street blaze was reported just after 4am on Saturday. The occupants escaped without injury. Assault on popular Porirua walking track prompts re-assurance patrols

Photo: 123RF Wellington police will carry out re-assurance patrols, after the daylight assault of a female on a Porirua walking track. Detective Sergeant Ben Evans said the assault happened about halfway up the stairs of the Rangituhi/Colonial Knob walking track at about 3.30pm on Wednesday, 18 June. "This is a deeply concerning incident and police are offering support to the victim, who is understandably shaken," he said. "Police are following positive lines of enquiry, but are seeking the public's assistance to help locate the alleged offender. One dead after Otago farm crash, one in critical condition after car fire
(File photo) Photo: RNZ One person has died, after a crash on an Otago farm, and another has been critically injured, after a car fire in Otago. Police said one person died at the scene of a crash on a farm near Millers Flat in Central Otago, about 10:30pm Thursday. Three other people had minor to moderate injuries and were taken to hospital. Police are investigating what happened. Meanwhile, another person was flown to hospital in a critical condition, after the car fire at Karitane, north of Dunedin. Emergency services were called to the blaze on Coast Road, shortly after 6am Friday. A St John ambulance spokesperson said crews - including a helicopter - responded and one critically injured patient was flown to Dunedin Hospital. Fire and Emergency shift manager Lyn Crosson said the car was 'well alight' when firefighters from Waikouaiti arrived. "We didn't have to remove anyone from the car," Crosson said. Police said they were making enquiries and that the fire did not appear to be suspicious. Emergency services have also been kept busy in Tasman , where three people have been critically injured in two different car crashes, on Thursday.
