Blaze heating up while Hampshire Hawks close gap

BBC News19 hours ago

The Blaze overcame Lancashire to remain unbeaten and close the gap at the top on Women's T20 Blast leaders Surrey as Hampshire also won to remain in touch.Australia's Heather Graham collected 3-36 as The Blaze restricted Thunder to 150-9 at Leicester.Scotland's Ailsa Lister provided the main Lancashire resistance with a superb 79 from 38 balls. The hosts were in a spot of bother at 84-4 in the 12th over when England skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt departed for 31 in her first domestic appearance since 2023.But Georgia Elwiss hit an unbeaten 43 to steer them over the line with 10 balls to spare and five wickets in hand.At Taunton, Freya Kemp smashed an unbeaten 65 as Hampshire posted 169-6 and, despite 60 from Niamh Holland and 43 from Amanda-Jade Wellington, the winless hosts' brave chase fell five runs short.
Lister fireworks in vain for Thunder
After being asked to bat first, Thunder struggled to 29-2 in the six-over powerplay but Lister had an escape when she was dropped at mid-wicket on three.Thunder were 65-4 in the 12th over but the fifth-wicket pair of Lister and Fi Morris (22) almost doubled the total before the latter hit Graham straight to backward point with 15 balls to go.Alana King, Kate Cross and Tara Norris went without scoring and Lister, dropped again on 62, eventually fell to the final ball from Graham, having hit the Australian for six twice in addition to nine fours in her 79 - the highest by the team this season. The Blaze lost Tammy Beaumont and Kathryn Bryce early in the reply but Sciver-Brunt hit four of her first 10 balls to the boundary and the hosts looked comfortable at the halfway point, needing 78 to win.Sciver-Brunt missed a straight ball from Grace Potts to depart and England colleague Amy Jones followed for 16 soon after but three fours from Graham (19*) regained momentum and Elwiss hit her seventh four down the ground to win it.
Kemp shines for Hawks as Somerset edged out
On a scorching day at Taunton, Hampshire openers Maia Bouchier and Charli Knott put on 80 before Chloe Skelton took a fine catch over her shoulder at mid-on to send Bouchier on her way for 43 from 26 balls with eight boundaries. In her final game before returning to Australia, Knott holed out to international team-mate Wellington at long-on 10 balls later for 43 from 34 balls.Georgia Adams (10) and Rhianna Southby fell in successive deliveries to Charlie Dean (3-25), while Abi Norgrove was run out in the next over. But Kemp went through the gears, with seven fours and two sixes in her 38-ball stay which guided the visitors to 169-6.Seeking their first win in their seventh match, Somerset fell to 19-2 after four overs but Holland shared a stand of 52 with Sophie Luff (23) and then 63 with Wellington on her way to a career-best T20 innings of 60 from 53 balls, to set up a tense finale.Wellington hit 44 from 25 balls but fell in the final over as the hosts came up just short at 164-6.

England's Lewis-Skelly agrees new Arsenal deal

England defender Myles Lewis-Skelly has agreed a new contract at left-back, whose current deal expires in 2026, has been in talks with the Gunners over recent months. The 18-year-old has now agreed the outline of an extended agreement, which will see him commit his future to the Gunners once signed. It is reward for a breakthrough campaign last season, which saw Lewis-Skelly make 39 appearances in all competitions. He made his debut against Manchester City in September and was mainly used at left-back, despite emerging through Arsenal's academy as a midfielder. Lewis-Skelly's performances earned him a call-up to the full England squad in March, having previously been capped from Under-16 through to U19 scored in a 2-0 win against Albania at Wembley, becoming the youngest player in history to score on their full Three Lions debut. Lewis-Skelly's performances last term saw him nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year award earlier this week, alongside Morgan Rogers, Liam Delap, Dean Huijsen, Milos Kerkez and Ethan Nwaneri.

Liverpool must make world-record Neymar-style bid for Newcastle to even contemplate Alexander Isak transfer

NEWCASTLE remain determined to keep Alexander Isak - and it would take a Neymar-style bid for them to even contemplate cashing in. Speculation is mounting again that Liverpool are readying a swoop for Toon 27-goal top scorer. 2 SunSport understands there has been no official contact from the Reds yet over a potential deal. However, even if there is, Newcastle's stance has not changed one bit. And even talk of £150million being enough to land the Swede is way off the mark. In fact, it would take a bid near the £200m world-record Paris Saint-Germain forked out to Barcelona for Neymar to even get a response. Despite all of the recent rumours, Newcastle still plan to hold talks with Isak's camp over a new deal for their star. His contract at St. James' Park runs until 2028 and they are under no pressure financially to cash in either after coming through their recent PSR issues. Isak has made no murmurs about leaving for Anfield either, saying he is focused on playing. The Swede said: 'I don't know much, to be honest. From within the club and from our side there are absolutely no discussions. It's just full focus on playing for me. 2 There's not much to say, really. I've commented on my situation and my security in Newcastle several times. 'It's been written how much I love the city and the club, how well I feel there. I'm not thinking about the future. I just want to perform for Newcastle. 'There is no reason for me to think about anything else (other than Newcastle). I feel incredibly comfortable at Newcastle. The only focus I have is on playing.' Liverpool have had a busy start to the transfer window, bringing in Jeremie Frimpong as a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Collins seeks 'Scotland v England' bout with Ball

Scottish featherweight Nathaniel Collins is targeting an all-British world title showdown with Nick Ball at the turn of the Glasgow fighter is coming off a stunning win over Scottish rival Lee McGregor at the Hyrdo last month and expects to be back fighting in his home city in 28, hopes that will be the springboard to a fight with WBA champion Ball who, like Collins, is promoted by Frank Warren's Queensberry."I just want to be cracking on to world titles now," Collins told BBC Scotland."It's easy for Queensberry to make world title fights because I'm a featherweight, they've got a world champion featherweight in Nick Ball." And he added: "He's fighting in Saudi Arabia in the next couple of months as well so by the end of the year, or starting next year, that's an easy fight to make."An all British, Scotland v England world title fight - it makes sense."Liverpool fighter Ball, 28, is unbeaten in 23 professional fights and claimed the WBA title with a thrilling win over Raymond Ford in Riyadh last has also yet to taste defeat in his 17 contests as a pro and has no fears of taking on a man considered one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the UK."We were meant to fight a couple of years ago for the British title and things didn't work out that way and then I've been calling for that ever since," Collins said."Now's the time for it because he's having a great career and building a lot of attention, I'm starting to build a lot of attention, so hopefully within the next six months that becomes a thing that comes to fruition."Collins described his appearance on the Josh Taylor v Ekow Essuman undercard, in which he dropped McGregor three times and stopped him in the fourth round, as "the best night ever".Now as he prepares to headline his own show in September back in Glasgow, Collins wants to ensure big fight nights in Scotland continue to be a feature on the boxing calendar."That was the goal when I first signed with Queensbury, I said I want to bring big nights back to Scotland and Glasgow," he said."I grew up going to Ricky Burns' fights and that made me want to do this. It was spoken about before the last fight, the winner of me and Lee's fight would continue to carry the torch as they say, and hopefully I can keep doing it."
