Edinburgh Rubiks cube prodigies face off at Scottish championship held in capital

Over 200 Rubik's Cube solvers from across Scotland and beyond will descend on Edinburgh this May for the Kewbz Scottish Championship 2025 — set to be the biggest speedcubing competition ever held in Scotland, and one of the largest in Europe this year.
Taking place from Friday, May 20 to Sunday, June 1 at Meadowbank Stadium, the event will see competitors from over 20 countries attempt to solve the famous Rubik's Cube — as well as a range of other events from blindfolded to one handed — in the shortest possible time.
The competition, which is the first ever Scottish Championship to be held, is hosted by the UK Cube Association, with its results officially recognised by the World Cube Association (WCA), the international governing body for speedcubing.
'Speedcubing has exploded in popularity in recent years,' said Adam Leyton, one of the event organisers from the UKCA.
People often think of the Rubik's Cube as a retro toy from the 1980s, but it's actually now more popular than ever. It's fantastic that we have the opportunity to host such a high-profile competition right here in Edinburgh.'
All eyes are on 13-year-old prodigy Johnny Morello Kerlaff from Edinburgh as he heads into this year's prestigious 3x3 event, where he's one of the leading contenders.
A rising star in the cubing scene, Johnny currently holds the Scottish record for the fastest solve time, clocking in at a speedy 5.41 seconds.
In 2024, Johnny made a strong impression at the UK Championship, finishing in third place and earning recognition as one of the country's most promising young cubers.
Now he'll be aiming to build on that success at this year's Scottish Championship, hoping to deliver another memorable performance.
Also among the standout names competing in Edinburgh will be Lanarkshire cuber Ryan Eckersley, who currently holds multiple European Records in the blindfolded solving category and placed second at the 2024 European Championships.
Ryan said: "Competing at such a major event in my home country is something really special to me.
"There's going to be some serious competition but I've been putting in a lot of practice lately and I'm really excited to see how I perform.'

Scot makes moves as Tommy Fleetwood catches fire on day two Resurgent Bob MacIntyre produced some sand magic to ignite a mini-charge at the Travelers Championship as Ryder Cup pal Tommy Fleewtood joined the leaders up front. Justin Thomas jumped into his share at the halfway mark as he matched Rory McIlroy's first-round score on the second day to move to nine-under par. That allowed him to catch Scottie Scheffler, who, like MacIntyre, suffered on the penultimate hole at TPC River Highlands for the second straight day. SPFL club forced to cancel friendly against Scottish Premiership side due to stadium repairs

Morton were due to host St Mirren in a non-competitive clash on Tuesday, July 8, with both teams looking to step up their preparations for the Premier Sports Cup which gets underway just a few days later. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 The roof at the famous 'cowshed' still neds repaired Credit: Kenny Ramsay The game was set to be held at Morton's home stadium Cappielow Park, but it's no longer allowed to go ahead due to repairs to the 'Cowshed' roof after it suffered damage from Storm Eowyn in January. Several corrugated iron panels on the roof had blown off as the West coast of Scotland was hit by gale force winds. Morton have still yet to fix the damage but the club tonight confirmed that repair work will begin next week. However, the friendly cannot be played while the construction takes place. A statement from the Scottish Championship club read: "The club are pleased to confirm that the long-awaited works to repair the Cowshed Roof begin on Monday. "It is expected that works will continue throughout most of July and be completed by the start of the William Hill Championship season when we welcome Dunfermline to Cappielow on 2nd August. "Following discussions with our contractor, the pre-season match scheduled against St Mirren on Tuesday 8th July has now been cancelled. "We confirm the Premier Sports Cup tie versus Stenhousemuir, due to be played at Cappielow on 15th July, will go ahead but without supporters in the Cowshed. "We will provide an update on that in due course. "We thank supporters in advance for their understanding on this matter, and look forward to having the Cowshed back in full working order for the 2025/26 William Hill Championship campaign." A statement from St Mirren said: 'Morton have today informed us that they will no longer be able to host the planned Communities Cup friendly match at Cappielow on Tuesday 8th July. 'With the match now cancelled, the club is looking at alternative options to aid our preparations for the Premier Sports Cup group stages and will update when possible.'
