Gold Retreats from 4-Week High as Dollar Gains Slightly - Jordan News

Jordan News03-06-2025

Gold Retreats from 4-Week High as Dollar Gains Slightly Gold prices declined on Tuesday, pulling back from their highest level in nearly four weeks, as a slight recovery in the U.S. dollar weighed on the yellow metal. However, ongoing uncertainty surrounding U.S.–China trade talks kept investor caution intact and limited the downside. اضافة اعلان Spot gold fell 0.5% to $3,362.57 per ounce as of 04:29 GMT, after earlier hitting its highest since May 8. U.S. gold futures dipped 0.3% to $3,386.60. Gold had previously jumped about 2.7% in the prior session, marking its strongest daily gain in over three weeks. 'The dollar recovered slightly, and gold fell—so they are moving inversely at this point,' said Brian Lan, Managing Director at GoldSilver Central in Singapore. Despite the dip, gold continues to track global trade developments closely. While there was a minor pullback in investor positions, it wasn't as steep as during previous moments of apparent de-escalation in trade tensions, Lan added. The U.S. Dollar Index also recovered slightly from a six-week low, maintaining its influence on gold pricing. Trade Tensions in Focus: A call between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected this week, according to the White House. The U.S. plans to double tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to 50% on Wednesday, coinciding with the deadline set by the Trump administration for countries to improve their trade offers. The European Commission announced it will present strong arguments this week for the U.S. to reduce or eliminate these tariffs, despite Washington's intention to increase them. Other Precious Metals: Silver: down 1.9% to $34.12/oz Platinum: up 0.1% to $1,064.66/oz Palladium: down 0.1% to $986.10/oz
Volatility remains elevated across precious metals markets amid currency shifts and geopolitical developments.

Xi calls for urgent ceasefire in Middle East

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire in the Middle East, warning that the escalating conflict poses a serious threat to regional and global stability. Xi made the remarks during a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, in which the two leaders discussed the rapidly deteriorating situation in the region. Calling the current Middle East crisis 'highly perilous,' Xi said it reflects a broader global shift toward instability and transformation. He warned that continued escalation would cause greater suffering for those directly involved and could severely impact neighboring countries. Xi stressed that the use of force is not a legitimate method for resolving international disputes, as it only fuels hatred and confrontation. He urged all parties, especially 'Israel', to halt military operations immediately to prevent further escalation and regional spillover. Ensuring the safety of civilians must be the top priority, Xi said, adding that the red line of civilian protection must never be crossed, and the indiscriminate use of force is unacceptable. He called on all parties to adhere to international law, avoid harming civilians, and facilitate the safe evacuation of foreign nationals. Reaffirming China's commitment to peaceful resolution, Xi said dialogue and negotiation are the only viable paths toward long-term peace. He also underscored the need to return to a political solution regarding Iran's nuclear issue. Xi called on the international community, particularly influential powers, to take responsible steps to ease tensions, and urged the UN Security Council to play a more active role in promoting peace. China, he added, is ready to work with all parties to promote dialogue, uphold justice, and contribute constructively to restoring peace in the Middle East. Russian President Vladimir Putin echoed Xi's concerns, stating that 'Israel's' strike on Iranian nuclear facilities was "extremely dangerous." He emphasized that no one stands to gain from continued escalation and called for a diplomatic resolution to the Iranian nuclear issue. Putin also stressed the importance of protecting foreign nationals caught in the conflict and expressed Russia's readiness to coordinate closely with China to help reduce tensions and maintain regional stability.

Russia warns US over Iran intervention as Putin, Xi urge ceasefire

Russia's Foreign Ministry on Thursday warned the United States against launching military action against Iran, amid growing speculation over Washington's possible entry into the escalating war alongside 'Israel'. The warning came shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping condemned Israeli strikes on Iran in a phone call and urged diplomacy to end the conflict. 'We would like to particularly warn Washington against military intervention in the situation,' Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said during a press briefing, adding that any US action 'would be an extremely dangerous step with truly unpredictable negative consequences.' The diplomatic push follows a series of unprecedented strikes exchanged between 'Israel' and Iran. Last week, 'Israel' launched a wave of attacks targeting Iranian territory, to which Tehran responded with a barrage of drones and missiles. On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump said he was weighing the possibility of joining the strikes. 'I may do it, I may not do it,' he told reporters, leaving the door open for American involvement. Earlier on Thursday, the Kremlin said Putin and Xi 'strongly condemn Israel's actions,' emphasizing that the conflict must be resolved through political and diplomatic means. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said both Moscow and Beijing agree that 'the end to the hostilities should be achieved exclusively by political and diplomatic means.' Xi: Ceasefire is top priority Chinese state media reported that Xi urged 'Israel' to halt its military actions and called a ceasefire the 'top priority.' 'Promoting a ceasefire and cessation of hostilities is the top priority. Armed force is not the correct way to resolve international disputes,' Xi said, according to Xinhua. 'Parties to the conflict, especially Israel, should cease hostilities as soon as possible to prevent a cyclical escalation and resolutely avoid the spillover of the war,' he added. Putin positions himself as mediator Putin has presented himself as a potential mediator between Iran and 'Israel'. Despite his close ties to Tehran—strengthened further during Russia's war in Ukraine—he also maintains diplomatic relations with Tel Aviv. Last week, Putin spoke by phone with both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, offering Russia's help in brokering a resolution. Xi reportedly backed Putin's mediation efforts. 'He believes that it could serve to de-escalate the current situation,' Ushakov said. However, Putin's overture has been met with skepticism in the West.
