Pune sex racketeer Kalyani Deshpande arrested for ganja smuggling
Pune: The Pimpri Chinchwad crime branch on Monday arrested infamous sex racketeer Kalyani Deshpande from Andhra Pradesh pertaining to 20.7 kg ganja seizure from her garment store and a flat on Sus Road area on May 24.

An anti-narcotics cell of the crime branch, led by senior inspector Santosh Patil, received a tip-off that Deshpande was in the Rajanagaram in the East Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh. "Assistant inspector Vikram Gaikwad reached there and took Deshpande into custody with the help of our local informer," Santosh Patil told TOI.
Patil said Deshpande has been handed over to the Bavdhan police for further investigations.
The police on May 24 arrested her's husband, niece, and niece's husband after they recovered 20.7 kg of ganja from the basement of her garment store 'Kalyani Collection' and her flat on Sus Road. "We arrested the three people, but Deshpande managed to escape from there," Patil said.
Patil said Deshpande has as many as eight cases against her, including a murder and running a prostitution racket, with the Pune city police.
Her name has cropped up in numerous cases of high-profile prostitution rackets in the last 15 years.
In 2022, however, Deshpande was convicted for seven years by a special court in Pune in a case under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) for running a sex racket.
She subsequently appealed against the conviction before the Bombay High Court and secured bail pending appeal. In Jan 2024, the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar police arrested Deshpande pertaining to a high-profile sex racket in Satara. "Currently, she is out on bail. For the last five months, she has started smuggling ganja. We busted her ganja racket before she could set it up," he said.

Bombay HC disposes plea against loudspeaker use at Thakur village in Kandivali, asks petitioners to seek remedy under law
The Bombay High Court disposed of a writ plea seeking prohibition on the use of loudspeakers and other noise-emitting devices at a public premises in Thakur village, Kandivali (East). The court asked the petitioners to approach the authority concerned for the remedy available as per law. A bench of Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Sandeep V Marne on June 18 made the observation while hearing a plea filed by activist Bhavesh Premchand Kalia and lawyer Rajeev Kumar Sharma, who are also local residents, through advocate Reena Rolland. The plea sought direction to the Mumbai police commissioner to immediately prohibit the use of loudspeakers and direct the state government to strictly implement the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000. The plea also sought direction to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to take over the complete possession of the said public premises and regulate its use for the welfare of residents of Thakur village by developing it into a garden as per the original Development Plan and stop commercial misuse of the public property. It sought direction to the government to declare the premises a silent zone, considering its proximity to three schools, colleges, and hospitals. The petitioners claimed that while in 2015, the Thakur Public Schools 1 & 2 and Oxford International School were designated as part of the silence zone, they were excluded in 2017. Later, as per the plea, the BMC in the same year confirmed that it had taken over the public premises in question, which were initially given to Thakur College of Science and Commerce. Despite the same, the plea claimed that the premises continued to be in unauthorised possession and used by certain influential private individuals. The petitioners added that the police had granted permission for the use of loudspeakers on the said public premises in 2023, but they did not monitor decibel levels. They added that despite residents making several complaints against BMC and police authorities, no action was taken. Advocates Hare Krishna Mishra and Kunal Jha representing Thakur Educational Trust opposed the plea. They argued that the issues involved in the present plea had already been adjudicated in previous high court decisions involving larger consideration of noise pollution norms. 'In case if any one is acting in violation of the directions issued by the Division Bench of this Court in the aforesaid decision, it is open for the petitioners to take recourse to such remedies as may be available to them in law,' the HC bench said and disposed of the plea.

Chatra: The 4,000 residents of Banasham village, located three km from the Kunda block headquarters, in Chatra district are unable to avail the basic amenities of a human life as the rural area is yet to be linked with a paved road till date. A four-wheeler belonging to a resident of the Kunda block headquarters, which was booked to transport a sick Saroj Kumar (48) to the hospital on Saturday, got stuck in the damaged kachcha road. It took 8-10 hours to pull it out. The family members of the sick person took him to the hospital on a motorcycle in rain. Driver Umesh Kumar said, "We were passing through a kachcha road to reach the village when the vehicle got stuck in the slush. Many parts of the vehicle got damaged. I will never come to this village again in spite of the money offered." Villager Manoj Kumar said, "Elections have been organised and people's representatives elected for years since Independence and even after the state was formed. But we are yet to get a road. Driving on the katchha road during monsoon poses a risk to our safety. Bikes have met with accidents due to the dilapidated kachcha road several times." In another case in Pratappur block, a road leading to the Gome bridge on Pratappur Huntergunj main road has caved in. The soil under the road has been washed away due to due to the continuous heavy rain. Pratappur police demarcated the area for the safety of the commuters. Speaking to TOI, deputy development commissioner Amrendra Sinha said, "The district administration is taking all steps to ensure basic facilities in rural areas. We will take steps to ensure that Banasham village is linked to Kunda block with a paved road. As for the road leading to the Gome bridge, we are assessing the damages and funds will be allotted for the repair."
