Overview
As compact cars have fallen out of favor in the automotive zeitgeist, affordable and efficient four-doors like the Volkswagen Jetta have become increasingly rare. That's especially true if you're looking for a compact car of German origin, as the Jetta is the final holdout following the standard Golf hatchback's demise. With a starting price below key rivals like the Honda Civic and Mazda 3, the Jetta is a value play. Its cabin is spacious, its 158-hp turbocharged inline-four gas engine boasts great fuel efficiency, and it comes chock-full of standard features. It might not be the most exciting compact around (look to the Jetta GLI if that's what you're after), but the Jetta's value proposition is hard to deny.
What's New for 2026?
After a substantial refresh last year, the Jetta gets only minor packaging tweaks for 2026. All Jetta trims now benefit from rear seatbelt pretensioners. The SE trim now comes with a sunroof as standard equipment, and the top-tier SEL model gets an eight-speaker premium VW audio system.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
The price of the 2026 Volkswagen Jetta is expected to start around $24,000 and go up to $31,000 depending on the trim and options.

While it's hard to ignore the S model's bargain price, the Sport trim hits the sweet spot for just a few dollars more. The Sport trim justifies its title with a front anti-roll bar, VW's XDS brake-based limited-slip differential, and standard 17-inch alloys. On the feature side are heated front seats, stainless-steel pedal trim, black window trim and mirror caps, and a 60/40 folding rear seat; all in, it's a steal for a moderate price increase. However, if power seats, remote start, satellite radio, and wireless charging are dealbreakers, you'll need to step up to the SE.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The 2026 Jetta carries over with the turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder making 158 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The six-speed manual is now only available in the Jetta GLI, so the eight-speed automatic handles gear swaps regardless of trim. In our initial test drive, we found that the updated model drives much the same as before. The chassis is tuned more for a quiet and comfortable ride than razor-edge handling, but that doesn't mean it's not entertaining within its limits; just know that its steering isn't as precise as its GLI sibling's or even the Mazda 3's. In this case, "performance" means a pleasant personality that doesn't mind stretching its legs when called upon.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
The EPA hasn't released any fuel economy information for the 2026 Jetta yet, but last year's Sport, SE, and SEL trims tied for top efficiency honors with an EPA-estimated 29 mpg city and 40 mpg highway. The base Jetta interestingly received a slightly lower rating, checking in with 29 mpg city and 39 mpg highway. We're pleased to report that previous Jetta models with the automatic exceeded their EPA Highway estimates in our 75-mph fuel-economy route, returning an impressive 42 mpg. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The Jetta provides a satisfying amount of front passenger head, shoulder, and legroom. The rear passenger compartment is reasonably roomy as well. The interior's design is contemporary, if not particularly fashionable, and although the feature content increases with each higher trim, every cabin caters to the driver and boasts excellent outward visibility. The base S has cloth upholstery, manually adjustable seats, useful door pockets, and a deep center console bin. Features including ambient interior lighting, wireless device charging, and ventilated front seats are reserved for the most expensive models. Though the Golf GTI hatchback trades partially on its cargo capacity, our testing revealed the Jetta held seven bags out of sight in its trunk, whereas the Golf swallowed only five behind its rear seat. Likewise, the Jetta held three extra bags more than the Golf (18 total) with the back seats folded, so there's no need to feel like you're forgoing cargo space by selecting the Jetta over a Golf.

Infotainment and Connectivity
Jetta S, Sport, and SE trims get a basic 8-inch digital gauge cluster; the SEL gets a 10.3-inch fully customizable setup. Thankfully, the tiny but useful hard knobs for volume and tuning on either side of the touchscreen remain. We're less excited about the exit of the previous Jetta's simple and familiar three-dial HVAC control setup, replaced here with a more finicky touch setup as seen in other VW products. A 4-speaker audio system is standard, the SE improves things with a six-speaker setup, and the SEL gets an eight-speaker Beats Audio rig. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability are baked in (wireless is standard on the SE and SEL), and VW's Car-Net feature allows for gesture controls such as swiping and pinch-to-zoom. Two USB-C ports are standard. Every Jetta has a mobile hotspot as long as you're willing to pay for a subscription-based data plan, and wireless charging is standard on the top two trim levels.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
Even the entry-level Jetta comes with a handful of standard driver-assistance technology, and upgraded equipment such as adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist are all available. YASA: UK Company Leading The Electrified Performance Car Revolution

The Ferrari SF90 Stradale takes advantage of YASA's electric motor technology. Electric cars predate those running on fossil fuel, but development was mostly dormant for a century after the combustion car took over in the early 1900s. The EV as we currently know it has only been around for a little over a decade. There's a lot of technological development taking place now, however. While most of the attention has been on batteries, motor innovation is extremely important too. One of the leading companies driving new motor technology is the UK's YASA, purchased by Mercedes in 2021. I talked to Tim Woolmer, Founder and CEO of YASA, about what makes his company special. YASA Technology: Available In An Electrified Supercar Near You The YASA name may not be familiar, but its electric motors are the secret sauce behind hybrid supercars including the Ferrari SF90 Stradale and 296 GTB, Lamborghini Revuelto and Temerario, McLaren Artura, and Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E-Performance. The latter is particularly relevant because of YASA's ownership change. This will also be the brand of the first all-electric car to use YASA motors. 'AMG has spoken about its new architecture, and the first car launched will be high performance electric vehicle,' says Woolmer. 'It's going to be a lot of fun, but it will be a different clientele than a mid-engine supercar.' YASA's focus will remain high-performance cars, but the company always had wider goals. 'Our core mission is to accelerate electrification. Our customers today have a good fit with the USPs of the product. They appreciate the size, light weight, repeatable performance, and efficiency.' The Lamborghini Revuelto is another electrified supercar using YASA's motors. Originally, the YASA motor was extremely low volume, used in halo hypercars such as the Jaguar C-X75, Koenigsegg Regera and a land speed record car produced by Lola-Drayson. Now YASA is increasing its production capacity considerably. In 2024, the company produced 14,000 motors, and with a new facility in Bicester Motion, this will increase to 25,000 motors annually for 2025-27. As part of the Mercedes relationship, its motors will also be produced in Berlin by Mercedes-AMG itself. 'We're going down this journey of commoditizing the product, going to high volumes, and reducing costs,' says Woomer. 'I'm absolutely convinced that the technology has got a perfect USP in the sports car industry. But as we move to new architectures, it could be commoditized to wider volume appeal. Lightweight is great for everything.' YASA Motors Mean The Yoke's On You The clue to YASA innovation is in its name, which stands for Yokeless And Segmented Armature. The motors use a different design to conventional radial flux systems, which almost all other electric motors employ. They don't have an iron core (or yoke), while the rotating part of the motor is segmented. This is an axial flux system, with permanent magnet rotors on either side of the electromagnetic stator. The result is around three times the torque density per kg compared to a radial flux motor, and a considerable reduction in raw material usage. Where a Tesla motor might have around 30kg of iron, a YASA motor only requires 3kg for the same power and torque. It's also a quarter of the size with a third of the copper. While this is useful for any electrified vehicle, weight saving alongside high power are particularly beneficial for performance vehicles. YASA's Axial Flux design is much lighter and more compact than a traditional Radial Flux motor. 'There are no downsides to it,' says Woolmer. 'You can take 200 kilograms directly out of a vehicle. Then you could start to see electric vehicles on par or even becoming lighter than their internal combustion engine equivalents. That's a real problem we must deal with, because EVs have a weight problem. They're up to 400kg heavier than a regular car.' YASA can produce motors from 100hp to 1,000hp, depending on the application. Most of its projects so far have been tailored to a specific customer's needs, rather than vice versa. However, this flexibility means YASA is ready to produce motors for all-electric cars. 'The first pure EVs going to production will be with AMG,' says Woolmer. 'The hybrids have been a wonderful preparation for that, because the motor is very similar.' The YASA motor used by Ferrari. The British Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) has been a key factor in YASA's growth. This is a joint UK government and industry-funded organization supporting the development of low-carbon propulsion technologies for the automotive industry to accelerate the transition to Net Zero. 'I don't think I would be exaggerating if I said I genuinely don't think this factory would exist without the APC,' says Woolmer. However, the Mercedes-Benz acquisition has enabled YASA to take its technology to a different level commercially. 'YASA was never looking to be acquired,' says Woolmer. 'But Mercedes put forward a compelling case for the purchase. They wanted us to be the speed boat; they didn't want to destroy our culture. They wanted us to keep our innovation and our brand. In return, they've got the industrial might to invest in the technology, which they've done both here and in and in the factory in Berlin. Four years later, they were true to all those statements. They've invested a lot in the assets, giving us a big new facility at Bicester Motion. That was a £70 million investment, plus a big investment in the technology to scale it up. They have been the perfect scaling partner.' YASA's UK Tech Triumph Despite the factory in Berlin, YASA will still be a UK-based company. 'We will remain fully British with our headquarters in Bicester Motion,' says Woolmer. 'All the R&D on the technology is happening here in the UK. Mercedes has manufacturing satellites all around the world, but manufacturing is not where the core Intellectual Property resides. The aspiration is to increase manufacturing the UK, not just do R&D here.' YASA will continue to develop its technology and build motors in the UK. The UK will also continue to manufacture for customers other than Mercedes, where Berlin will solely serve AMG. But now YASA has much more scale available. 'Ten years ago, we struggled to make 150 motors,' says Woolmer. 'Now, if we got a contract for 50,000 motors, we would know what to do.' YASA isn't sitting on its laurels and is already looking towards the next development. 'The game changer will be in-wheel motor technology,' says Woolmer. 'Renault launched the 5 Turbo 3E that will be the first production vehicle with in-wheel motors, although it's a limited series.' Donut Lab is another company chasing this possibility. 'We're not focused on it yet, but in the future, we will talk about it a lot more. We've got technology that can radically transform the way we design vehicles, and that really is empowered by the size and the weight of the motors. People have been trying to crack in-wheel motors for 25 years, and it's hard, but based off all the learning we've had so far, we think we've got the tech to do it.'

Does BYD or Tesla stock offer the best value?

Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) and BYD (OTC:BYDD.F) are the two titans of the global electric vehicle (EV) market, but their investment cases diverge sharply when you dig into the numbers and outlook. Here's how they stack up for investors looking ahead. Tesla's forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratios remain stratospheric by any standard. The company is expected to trade at 168.8 times earnings in 2025, falling to 111.4 times in 2026 and 85.7 times in 2027. Even by its own five-year history, these multiples are elevated, and they are more than 10 times the consumer discretionary sector median. BYD, by contrast, looks far more modest. Its forward P/E is 18.4 times for 2025 and 14.2 times for 2026. That's just a fraction of Tesla's and much closer to sector norms. This huge valuation gap reflects the market's belief in Tesla's future growth, but also means any disappointment could hit the shares hard. Tesla's price-to-sales ratio for 2025 is a lofty 10.4 times, while BYD's is just 0.65 times. In other words, investors are paying a huge premium for each dollar of Tesla's sales, while BYD trades closer to traditional automaker multiples. BYD's lower multiple reflects its mass-market positioning and focus on affordability, while Tesla's premium signals expectations for high-margin growth and disruptive new business lines. Tesla boasts a market cap over $1trn, with $37bn in cash and $13bn in debt. This gives it a strong net cash position and plenty of firepower for R&D and expansion. BYD, with a market cap around $147bn, holds $21bn in cash and $5.7bn in debt. Still solid, but on a smaller scale. Tesla's financial muscle gives it flexibility, but BYD's balance sheet is also robust and supports its rapid global expansion. The real battleground is not just EVs, but autonomous driving and robotics. Tesla's valuation is highly detached from automotive peers because investors are betting it will dominate self-driving technology and unlock new business models like robotaxis and AI-powered logistics. Its Dojo supercomputer and Full Self-Driving (FSD) efforts are central to this thesis, though regulatory hurdles remain. BYD is not standing still. Its latest models integrate advanced driver-assist systems, LiDAR, and rapid-charging battery tech. This has already made headlines. However, its approach is more incremental, focusing on affordability, scale, and steady technological improvements. Coupled with the fact that it's Chinese, it hasn't been afforded the same attention by investors. BYD trades at far lower valuation multiples and has recently overtaken Tesla in global EV sales, especially in China and Europe. Meanwhile, Tesla commands a huge premium based on its potential to lead in autonomy and AI-driven transport. However, the execution risk is huge. For value-focused investors, BYD is the obvious choice, but clearly the market favours Tesla and Elon Musk's ambitions. With dozens of brightly labeled bottles lining the aisles of AutoZone and Pep Boys stores everywhere—promising smoother rides, better mileage, or cleaner engines—picking the right one can feel like a guessing game. A viral TikTok video cuts through the noise, offering a symptom-based guide to choosing the right additive without the hype. Chris Stone (@chrisfrombeachside), vice president of Beachside Auto Parts in Daytona, Florida, says he recorded the video to help unfamiliar motorists make the best choice when selecting from the dizzying array of products promising to turn their vehicle into a fine-tuned machine. Stone's advice resonated with his audience. Hundreds shared their preferred additives, asked for additional information, and wrote comments thanking him. As of this writing, his post has been viewed 1.2 million times. How Do You Choose and Use the Right Additive? Between bold claims, cryptic acronyms, and engine diagrams that look like they belong in a textbook, it's easy to feel like you're flying blind. Instead of hype, Stone offers plain-language advice: Choose the product based on your symptoms, like hesitation, rough idle, ticking, or knocking, and you'll have a better shot at actually solving the issue. And for engines showing signs of knock or ping — especially in turbocharged vehicles — he recommends Royal Purple Max Clean to smooth out combustion. He doesn't stop at recommending products. Stone shares a useful technique for effectively using a fuel additive . He says that for most fuel system cleaners, you should wait until your tank is under a quarter full, pour the additive in, and then drive aggressively (within legal limits) to circulate the treatment effectively before refueling. This helps the cleaner come into more direct contact with injectors and combustion surfaces, increasing its effectiveness. Of course, fuel additives aren't a magic fix. If you've got a check engine light or ongoing performance issues, it's best to get a professional diagnostic. But for routine maintenance, especially with older or high-mileage vehicles, the right additive can play a useful role in keeping your engine running smoothly. When Should You Use an Additive? Most mechanics and product manufacturers recommend using a treatment every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. However, that interval can vary depending on fuel quality, engine design, and driving habits. High-mileage vehicles, cars frequently driven in stop-and-go traffic, or those using lower-quality fuel may benefit from more frequent use. Drivers who use high-grade gasoline may find they need additives less often. This doesn't necessarily mean you shouldn't use a fuel additive if you always buy premium. While many premium fuels contain detergents to keep injectors clean, dedicated fuel system cleaners tend to offer higher concentrations of active ingredients like PEA (polyetheramine), which can clean deeper into the intake valves and combustion chamber. This can be especially helpful for older engines or cars with unknown maintenance histories, where carbon buildup may already affect performance. It's also important to note that compatibility matters. Not every fuel additive is designed for every engine type. Some are explicitly formulated for gasoline engines, while others are safe for diesels or compatible with ethanol-blended fuels. Hybrids and direct injection engines may also have different needs or tolerances. Always check the label for your engine type, and avoid assuming that any additive is one-size-fits-all. The wrong product can reduce effectiveness at best and cause damage at worst. Another point of confusion for many DIY car owners is whether it's okay to mix multiple additives in the same tank. The short answer is no, unless the manufacturer explicitly allows it. Most companies advise using just one additive per treatment cycle to avoid unintended chemical interactions or dilution of key ingredients. It's best to wait until your tank is nearly empty, add the recommended dose, and then refill, following label instructions closely to ensure safe and effective results. 'There's a lot of marketing out there, but nobody knows exactly what's good for what,' Stone told Motor1 over the phone. 'They all claim the same things, but they're all made differently and they have different values for different drivers.'
