
Woking: Homes remain without gas for third day
Some homes in Surrey remain without gas for a third day after water leaked into a gas network.Gas supplier SGN said a total of 340 homes in the Goldsworth Road area of Woking were affected by damage on Sunday.More than 24,000 litres of water had been pumped out of the gas network as of 21:00 GMT on Monday, SGN said.The exact circumstances of how the water entered SGN infrastructure remains under investigation.
One local resident said she and her children did not each much on Monday as she was unable to use her cooker."It's frustrating. The kids want a warm meal and I can't provide that to them," she told BBC Radio Surrey."The house is cold and we have to huddle upstairs and use small heaters, which took up a lot of electricity."Another resident added: "It's been freezing and highly inconvenient."The gas company told me they are working on it, that's all they can do. It's just hard work, it's half-term as well and every body's at home."A customer service station has been set up at Woking Railway Athletic Club, which will be open until 21:00."If you're elderly, disabled, chronically sick or have young children, you can obtain portable electrical appliances for cooking and heating," an SGN spokesperson said.Water supplier Affinity Water said it had carried emergency repairs to the damaged water main."While SGN is leading the restoration of gas services, we remain fully committed to assisting them and supporting the local community throughout the process," an Affinity Water spokesperson added.

Affinity Water recently sent its roughly 3.6 million customers a message telling them to help "make a real difference" over the coming days of the heatwave. The note, sent via email, asks customers to cut back on their water consumption, and to only run the tap for "essentials" as the heat puts a "real strain on the network". It states: "To make sure we can keep water flowing to you and your community, we're asking our customers to make a real difference over the next few days. "Please cut back where you can - delay or stop non-essential use and make every drop count. Please only use water for essentials like drinking, cooking and washing. The increase in water usage is putting a real strain on our network." Affinity Water supplies water primarily across the southeast to approximately 1.4 million homes and 78,000 "non-household connections". Regions under its supply chain include Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Surrey, and several London boroughs, including Harrow, Hillingdon, and parts of Barnet, Brent, Ealing, and Enfield. The network added in the email that residents of these areas are currently using water at an unsustainable rate that is "faster than we can pump it and store it". If usage stays high, the email adds, it could lead to a "no water situation". The note states: "That means your area could see lower water pressure or a no water situation if usage stays high." Affinity is far from the only water supply firm that has issued a warning to its customers, with the hot weather placing a strain on several other suppliers. United Utilities' north west water board has asked customers to save water where they can, with reservoirs in the north of England dropping more than 20 percent below average. Anglian Water has followed suit, telling customers to "use a little less". The company serves millions of customers across Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire, Milton Keynes, Norfolk, Lincolnshire and parts of Cambridgeshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Suffolk and Essex.

Air India Dreamliner returns to Hong Kong after technical issue
NEW DELHI — An Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner plane bound for New Delhi returned to its origin of Hong Kong shortly after takeoff on Monday as a precautionary measure following a suspected technical issue. Last week, an Air India flight to London, using the same type of Boeing aircraft, crashed in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad moments after takeoff, killing 241 of the 242 people on board. Air India said in a statement on Monday that flight AI315 returned to Hong Kong because of what it described as 'a technical issue' without giving details. It said the flight landed safely and was undergoing checks 'as a matter of abundant precaution.' According to recordings posted on air traffic control monitoring website and reviewed by Reuters, one of the pilots in the plane told air traffic controllers around 15 minutes after takeoff that 'for technical reasons, sir, we would like to stay closer to Hong Kong, maybe we will come back and land back into Hong Kong once we sort out the problem.' 'We don't want to continue further,' the pilot said, before returning. Air India did not respond to a Reuters request for comment on the recording. AI315 made a return to Hong Kong International Airport after requesting local standby at around 1 p.m. (0500 GMT) and 'landed safely at around 1:15 p.m.,' the spokesperson of Airport Authority Hong Kong said. The airport operations were not affected, the spokesperson added. Flight AI315 took off from Hong Kong at around 12:20 p.m., reached an altitude of 22,000 feet, and then started descending, according to flight tracking website AirNav Radar. The plane was seven years old. Tropical storm Wutip makes landfall in southern China's Hainan
BEIJING, June 13 (Reuters) - Tropical storm Wutip slammed into southern China on Friday, pounding coastal regions with gales and heavy rainfall, National Meteorological Centre said. Packing wind speeds of 108 km per hour near its centre, Wutip made landfall in Dongfang city on the resort island province of Hainan around 11 pm (1500 GMT) after disrupting transport services, shutting schools and closing tourist attractions in the wider area. Wutip, the Cantonese word for "butterfly", formed over the South China Sea this week and intensified into a tropical storm on June 11. It marked the fifth-latest start of the Pacific tropical cyclone season in recent times.
