Aamir Khan recalls creditors yelling at him when father went ‘almost bankrupt': ‘They would say your father hasn't paid us back, very difficult period'
Aamir Khan was born in a film family; his uncle, director Nasir Hussain, was one of the most popular personalities of his generation, and his father, producer Tahir Hussain, was successful in his own right. But when Aamir was growing up, his family went through a tough time as his father had taken a fair amount of loans, which he wasn't able to repay. Aamir recalled in a recent interview that his father was 'almost bankrupt' when he was dealing with all of this.
He shared with Zoom, 'My father didn't know how to make money. He was a film producer, and even though his films did well, he wasn't a very good business man. Even if his film did well, he didn't make money.' Tahir had produced films like Caravan and Anamika. Aamir recalled that for about eight years, his family went through rather tough times because of these financial problems.
'Growing up, we saw a very difficult time of 6-8 years. My father was in a lot of financial troubles and he had borrowed a lot of money. Actors were not giving him any dates to shoot so he was stuck. He couldn't finish the film until he got more money, and the people he had borrowed money from, they were asking for their money back. He would tell the creditors, 'I don't have money right now, I will only get it when the film releases, and I will pay it back then. So let me get to a stage where I can release the film',' he recalled.

Aamir said that during this time, his father was 'almost bankrupt.' He shared that, as kids, if he or any of his siblings ever answered the phone when a creditor called, they would be yelled at. 'We were little then, and if we ever took phone calls, and if there was creditor on the other side, they would yell at us. They would say, 'Tell your father that he has not paid us our money.' So we have heard all of this growing up. That was a very difficult period because the entire family was affected by it,' he said. Aamir said that it was assumed that his family was wealthy because of its film connections, but that wasn't the case.
Aamir is currently looking forward to his next release Sitaare Zameen Par.

Bollywood's box office in 2025 has been nothing short of a spectacle, with several high-profile releases setting the cash registers ringing. From action-packed extravaganzas to franchise blockbusters, the year has already seen multiple big openers. Among them, Aamir Khan 's much-anticipated Sitaare Zameen Par secured the 6th position in the list of top Day 1 openers for Hindi films this year. Exclusive | Kajol CANDID On Horror Fears and Son Yug's Voice Debut In 'Karate Kids: Legends' On its opening day, Sitaare Zameen Par collected Rs 11.7 crore at the domestic box office. While not a record-breaker by Aamir's past standards, it's a decent start for an emotional family drama — especially in a market currently dominated by larger-than-life actioners and franchise comedies. Here's how the top openers of 2025 stack up so far: Vicky Kaushal 's Chaava – Rs 31 crore Salman Khan 's Sikandar – Rs 26 crore Akshay Kumar 's Housefull 5 – Rs 24 crore Ajay Devgn 's Raid 2 – Rs 19.25 crore Akshay Kumar's Sky Force – Rs 12.25 crore Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par – Rs 11.7 crore Sunny Deol 's Jaat – Rs 9.5 crore Akshay Kumar's Kesari 2 – Rs 7.75 crore Rajkummar Rao 's Bhool Chuk Maaf – Rs 7 crore Leading the charge is Vicky Kaushal's period action drama Chaavabased on life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, which exploded onto screens with Rs 31 crore, marking his career-best opener. Salman Khan's Eid release Sikandar, directed by AR Murugadoss, followed with Rs 26 crore. The tried-and-tested comedy franchise Housefull 5 claimed the third spot with Rs 24 crore, while Ajay Devgn's Raid 2 comfortably took the fourth position at Rs 19.25 crore. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Air conditioners without external unit. Sitaare Zameen Par Opening Day Box Office: Aamir Khan starrer has a soft start overseas
Aamir Khan starrer Sitaare Zameen Par earned USD 800K (Rs. 6.75 crore) approx on its opening day overseas. While the numbers are on the lower side, they are still better than what early pre-sales had indicated a couple of days ago. Breaking down its performance, the collections were muted all across the board. The Middle East was the top market with an estimated USD 300K first-day. This isn't a bad start for the genre, also being better than Laal Singh Chaddha, while in most other markets it's lower. The United States ended up with less than USD 200K first day, while the United Kingdom barely crossed GBP 50K. The film also has a limited showing on release, with several key locations for Hindi films having very few shows, but they recorded healthy occupancies. This may have been a deliberate choice by the distributors, following a similar release strategy as seen in the domestic market. In the coming days, if the film should have improvement in that regard, it will need to be seen if the collections jump accordingly as well. The film will be aiming for a weekend of USD 2.50 million or so, which is something films starring A-listers are supposed to do on their first day, but then no one was expecting that from Sitaare Zameen Par, in the context of the film having a low initial value and how the genre has struggled in general post-COVID. That said, what matters more is where the film ends up and not where it opened. On that front, there are some encouraging signs, with the initial word of mouth appearing to be positive. Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani had a soft start two years back, opening to just USD 4 million weekend. It also had showcasing issues at release, which got better in time, and the film legged to over USD 20 million final. Sitare Zameen Par will be hoping for a similar trajectory and gross over the USD 10 million mark, which will be a good outcome for this film.

While the original focused on a dyslexic child, this new installment explores the lives of neurodivergent adults. Aamir Khan plays Gulshan Arora, an arrogant basketball coach who is suspended for a DUI and ordered to perform community service by training a team of players with special needs. Initially reluctant, Gulshan finds himself on a transformative journey. The film marks the debut of Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishna Varma, Samvit Desai, Vedant Sharma, Ayush Bhansali, Ashish Pendse, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain, Naman Mishra, and Simran Mangeshkar in Hindi cinema. Divy Nidhi Sharma wrote the screenplay, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy composed the music, and Srinivas Reddy shot the visuals. Furthermore, in an audacious and rare decision, Aamir Khan has decided not to sell the film's OTT rights to any platform. Instead, he has committed to an exclusive theatrical release, trying to reconnect fans to the big screen while maintaining the collective. First Published:
