
Tata Communications delays key targets by a year. Should you be worried?
Tata Communications has delayed its ₹28,000 crore data revenue target by a year, now aiming for FY28 instead of FY27. Its Ebitda margin guidance of 23-25% and return on capital employed (RoCE) target of 25% have also been pushed back, citing macroeconomic uncertainties and deferred deals, as clients remain cautious about spending.
Analysts had already flagged that the FY27 target seemed ambitious without inorganic growth. So, with the guidance now pushed to FY28, does this deferment signal deeper trouble? What does it mean for investors?
Strong foundations
Tata Communications owns the world's largest fibre network of over 5 lakh kilometres of undersea fibre, and more than 2.1 lakh kilometres of land fibre. It holds a near-monopoly, with over 70% of global telecom companies using this network to provide mobile services. The network also supports 80% of global cloud players and 25% of the world's internet routes.
The company recorded a revenue of ₹23,109 crore in FY25 against ₹20,785 crore in FY24. Of the ₹23,109 crore, the majority 84% ( ₹19,513 crore), came from data revenue, while the remaining 16% came from voice and other sources. Data revenue is further categorized into core connectivity (data pipes) and digital platforms. Digital platforms, including cloud, cybersecurity, and IoT, are experiencing steady traction, driven by long-term demand trends.
Core connectivity, digital offerings
Digital platform revenue almost doubled to ₹9,171 crore in FY25, from ₹4,977 crore in FY24, accounting for 47% of its data revenue, up from 29% a year ago. At the same time, core connectivity revenue declined 15% to ₹10,342 crore, and now accounts for 53% (down from 71% in FY24) of data revenue. While cable cuts impacted H1 FY25, the broader trend indicates a structural slowdown in core connectivity.
Industry-wide annual price declines of 10-15%, combined with companies shifting from legacy internet calling systems to cloud-based tools (such as Zoom), and price shifts from MPLS (a private, secure, but expensive technology) to cheaper internet-based solutions, continue to weigh on its performance.
Nonetheless, core connectivity still contributes the bulk of Ebitda, accounting for ₹4,538 crores at a margin of 43.6%. However, this was offset by a ₹886 crore Ebitda loss (-9.7% margin) in the digital business, as it continues to be in investment mode. As a result, its margin fell from 25% in FY22, to 20% in FY25.
Digital ambitions
The data business has gained momentum, driven by strategic acquisitions. The earlier ₹28,000 data revenue target implied a steeper 19% compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) between FY23 and 27, which was even higher than the 11.6% CAGR recorded during FY21 to FY25.
This projection assumed enterprises' demand for integrated network, cloud, and security solutions would accelerate. This was subject to macroeconomic and geopolitical headwinds. Given these headwinds, a delay of a few quarters may not alter the long-term outlook.
Notably, the digital segment is expected to be the main growth driver. It is projected to contribute ₹18,200 crore, accounting for 65% of the ₹28,000 crore data revenue target. This implies a 26% CAGR, slightly higher than the 25% CAGR achieved during FY21-25. Meanwhile, core connectivity revenue is expected to decline.

New growth engines
One-third of the revenue growth is expected to be driven by new services, strategic digital investments, and shifts in digital capabilities. The company has identified five additional growth segments with a market size of over $40 billion.
One such bet is the Unified Cloud Network, launched in FY23, which already has an annual recurring revenue (ARR) of over $30 million. Tata expects the total addressable market to grow to $8 billion by FY30 from the current $3.5 billion. It is targeting 30% cost efficiency, a nine-times faster connection setup, and a 20-times reduction in error rate.
Next is the customer interaction suite (CIS), which is currently growing at a 15% CAGR and has an ARR of $30 million. It estimates the addressable market will double from $10 billion to $20 billion by FY30. CIS enables outcome-based, personalized interactions within the customer experience (CX) ecosystem.
Then comes the secure access service edge (SASE), which is growing at a 15% CAGR and has an annual revenue of $50 million. The current market size is $16 billion and is expected to grow at 17% CAGR through FY30.
Additionally, the company has recently entered two new markets. AI Cloud is the fastest-growing, with an expected CAGR of 82% and a current market opportunity of $1 billion in India. Its SaaS platform—Digital Fabric—addresses a $10 billion market, projected to grow at a 15% annual rate.

Customer base expansion
It's not just about entering new tech areas—it is also expanding its customer base. In FY25, the company added 16 clients that can generate at least $1 million in annual revenue, which typically takes around 18 months. It now has 290 such accounts, 1.4x more than in FY21.
The company expects to add 15–20 such clients annually, each with the potential to bring $10–50 million. More than 60% of its order book consists of multi-year deals, providing revenue visibility. It expects 75-80% of the incremental revenue to come from existing clients through cross-selling.
Among larger clients, 70% of those generating over $5 million annually use more than three Tata Communications services. In addition, 53% (155 out of 290) of million-dollar accounts derive over 50% of their spend from digital services. These high-value accounts made up 57% of the FY25 order book, proving strong growth potential.
Profitability still a work in progress
As with any emerging segment, the digital business remains loss-making, with an Ebitda loss of ₹886 crore in FY25. Management's first milestone is break-even, with margin expansion expected in FY26, aided by cost optimization and operating leverage.
Post break-even, management is targeting near-term margins of 4-6%, with a long-term goal of achieving double-digit margins and ₹1,500 crore in Ebitda. This will require adding over ₹2,300 crore in incremental Ebitda. However, Motilal Oswal believes that achieving this target will be challenging due to low margins in reselling services.
Balancing growth with asset monetization
To fund its ambitions, Tata Communications is also monetizing non-core assets. For instance, it sold its ATM subsidiary at a gain of ₹431 crore. It also has monetized real estate assets, raising over ₹1,000 crores over the last five years.
It plans to monetize two-three large additional land parcels, including those in Chattarpur and Greater Kailash. However, sale timelines can be long—the latest deal took five years to close. Proceeds from the transaction will be used to bring down leverage.
The continued expansion has also led to an increase in net-debt-to-Ebitda, from 1.3 times in FY23 to 2.1 times in FY25. Management expects this to improve to below 2x within the next two quarters.
Tata Communications is also looking to enhance capital efficiency.Its RoCE fell from 28% (FY23) to 16% in FY25, mainly due to investments in digital business. As the digital business turns profitable, management expects RoCE to rebound to 25%, and Ebitda margins to rise to 23–25%. Exiting low-margin contracts is also likely to help enhance returns and improve efficiency.

Valuation full, but triggers ahead
From a valuation perspective, it trades at a price-to-earnings multiple of 43, a 20% premium to its 10-year median of 35. For now, the shift in timeline appears priced in, with the stock trading largely flat. However, investors may need to tone down near-term growth expectations.
While the delay warrants caution, the long-term strategy remains intact if execution stays on course. Break-even in digital, improving margins, and a rebound in RoCE could be key triggers to watch. In contrast, risks like slower expansion, higher costs, supply chain uncertainties, and execution challenges can undermine the assumptions.

Digital payments for ads or software? Here's where TDS may surprise you
Freelancers, small business owners, and e-commerce sellers are increasingly relying on digital platforms for advertising, software, and sales. But these payments often come with tax obligations that many overlook, especially under India's Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) rules. Experts say a good starting point is identifying whether the payment is made to an Indian or foreign company. 'This is crucial, as domestic payments are governed by Sections 194C and 194J, while international ones fall under Section 195,' says Ankit Jain, partner at a chartered accountancy firm, Ved Jain and Associates. Domestic versus foreign payments: Know your provider For payments to Indian providers, such as digital ad agencies or cloud service resellers: Section 194C applies to ad contracts; TDS at 2 per cent if the annual payment exceeds Rs 30,000. Section 194J applies to professional or technical services like AWS or Zoom; TDS at 10 per cent. Exemption: 'TDS isn't required if you aren't under tax audit or are a non-corporate entity,' notes Jain. For foreign providers, such as Google, Meta, or SaaS platforms: TDS under Section 195 applies, but rates vary depending on the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA). You must also file Form 15CA/CB, even if TDS isn't deducted; failure attracts a penalty of Rs 1 lakh. Common mistakes to avoid According to Ritika Nayyar, partner at a law firm, Singhania & Co., many taxpayers: Wrongly assume no TDS is needed if the provider is foreign. Skip filing Form 15CA/CB if no TDS is deducted. Misapply DTAA benefits without obtaining a Tax Residency Certificate. Ignore changes in TDS law or documentation requirements. Selling online? Know your 1 per cent TDS rule Platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, and Zomato deduct 1 per cent TDS on seller earnings under Section 194-O. 'This amount reflects in your Form 26AS and can be claimed as a credit while filing returns,' says Nayyar, adding that, 'Maintaining accurate sales and TDS records is key.' Can small users avoid TDS? Yes, in many cases. If your turnover is below Rs 1 crore (business) or Rs 50 lakh (profession), you're generally not liable to deduct TDS. Also, individuals or HUFs paying for personal use are exempt from TDS obligations. But for international payments, no basic exemption exists, warns Jain. 'All such cases must be evaluated carefully, especially when claiming DTAA benefits.'

Tata Communications share price slipped 2.7 per cent in trade on Thursday, June 19, 2025, logging an intraday low at ₹1,654.25 per share on BSE. The stock was under pressure as it adjusted on the ex-dividend date. At 11:57 AM, Tata Communications shares were trading 2.7 per cent lower at ₹1,654.25 per share on the BSE. From AI agents to cloud telephony, Zoom executives discuss company's next act
Zoom wants to be much more than a video chat platform. It is taking on Google and Microsoft in enterprise software by shipping productivity tools such as Zoom Documents, Zoom Team Chat, Zoom Whiteboard, etc. It has also rolled out Zoom AI Companion and is integrating AI into all levels of its product suite. Zoom is also looking to strengthen its foothold in India by expanding its cloud-based enterprise telephony service called Zoom Phone to four additional licenced service areas across the country. The company further launched Contact Center here that enables customers to reach out to Zoom's enterprise clients through a wide range of channels, including voice, video, virtual agents, social media, email, and messaging apps. Security is central to everything Zoom does, Steve Rafferty, head of APAC and EMEA at Zoom, told in an exclusive interaction in New Delhi last week. Echoing this, Sameer Raje, the general manager and head of India & SAARC region at Zoom, highlighted the company's federated approach to AI that empowers its customers with greater control, privacy, and choice. Here are the edited excerpts from the interview: Zoom became a household name during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, it has pivoted to becoming more than a video conferencing platform. How does Zoom Phone and launching Zoom Contact Center in India further that vision? Steve: If you think of Zoom as a business communications platform, then video and meetings was the first element of that. Lots of organisations enter from different pivots. So we were meetings first, and now we've got chat, Contact Center, Phone, Clips, Documents, and so much more. We're trying to give our customers and partners one place to meet effectively, whether that's message, video, or phone. Whether it's internal communication or messaging externally with customers or suppliers, Zoom will give you that unified platform experience. That was always the plan. We just started with meetings. You mentioned that getting Zoom Phone regulatory compliant in India was an elaborate process. What were some of the terms and conditions involved in the DoT authorisation? Also, what do you think needs to change in terms of the eligibility conditions for cloud-based telephony services? Sameer: Authorisation is basically the license. It's the UL access BMO license which we took in all the six telecom circles [Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, and Delhi-NCR]. And each of the circles have their own requirements as well as technical call flow, approvals, so on and so forth. It's not as simple as building it once for one telecom circle and having it work everywhere. Logically, yes, the product might be the same but each circle requires its own set of regulatory approvals. When you have a global product, the DoT requirements are very stringent. For instance, all equipment must be certified by DoT. There are specific certification programmes and you cannot just use any hardware. From the hardware to the call flows, we had to change some of the elements of the product to make it compliant within the country. Hence, it was time consuming. Not only that, each telecom circle needs to be connected not only to the Zoom cloud but also to local telcos across the region and country. That includes setting up incoming and outgoing interconnections, which is a complex and time-consuming process. But that doesn't mean that you cannot use Zoom Phone anywhere outside these circles. Right now, these six circles are where you can procure the license from, but you can travel anywhere and accept calls and make calls to anywhere in the country. It's been more than a year since Zoom Workplace was introduced. How's the response been from enterprise clients compared to everyday users in terms of adoption and overall experience? How much of that has translated to sales? Steve: It's been very strong across all of our regions, especially internationally. What we're seeing now is different entry points for customers. Some customers may come in to start from a Contact Center journey because they've got a particular customer requirement, and we fix that. Then they'll adopt Zoom Phone or messaging. The workforce is changing at the moment. We're seeing a lot younger, more diverse workforce come in, and they've really taken to the Zoom platform because you can communicate by chat, you can pick up the phone, you can send a clip, you can join a work meeting, engage with customers, and so on. There's so many different angles to procure information. We've got control of so much data. A business can take that data and deliver better experiences to their customers. Have you noticed differences in how AI features are being adopted across specific use cases like customer support, live translation, meeting summaries, etc? Steve: There's two sides to that. There's the internal day-to-day job, and there's how you communicate with customers. We were with a customer last week at a sports shop. What they want is a specific chatbot for their clients, and they also want to be able to escalate that call really quickly to a human depending on the requirements. So if somebody wants to procure a tennis shoe, it is dead easy to handle. But if somebody wants bespoke running shoes, that's a specialist treatment. That's what we're seeing from a customer perspective. Zoom Workplace allows you to move those conversations around. Sameer: I'll add one critical point to that. We include Zoom Workplace in our license at no extra cost. Any other platform or AI engine may charge $20-$30 per user and the CEO or senior leadership may go for it thinking its the in thing. But are they really going to be that productive? Or does it make more sense to spend that $30 at the lower level so that the support agent can be more productive using AI on Zoom? They should be utilising AI where it makes better sense. It could be customer support or sales. Zoom Workplace can be rolled out across the organisation. One of the other areas that has been very positive to me is having all of that in one location. All the integrations on Zoom Workplace makes life so much easier and gives us hours back every week. While LLMs (large language models) can be quite convincing, trust is still a barrier to enterprise adoption. How do you solve for that? Steve: Security has to be at the heart of everything you do, whether it's AI or whether it's a basic implementation of any technology. We work with our customers, from CISO all the way down, to make sure that the data they're exposing is the correct data. We work with a security bank because you've seen from some of our competitors, how they've exposed people's salaries all the way through a business. We start with the security first? What's the outcome you're looking for, and how can we give you a secure outcome? And then the platform gets deployed based on that. What do you think about the role of AI agents on your platform, especially in automating enterprise workflows? Do you see them evolving into a meaningful revenue stream? Steve: It's about complementing the human workforce. It's not about replacing them. You've seen a lot of press with some organisations saying 'we're going to slim down our workforce. We're going to stick AI agents out there', and then it's difficult. What we do is, is, we speed up that journey for the customer. If you think about booking flights on air travel, for instance, we can pretty much run that whole system through a virtual agent. Sameer: If you look at our AI Companion, it's been embedded in a couple of products that we've introduced like Zoom Whiteboard where you can draw a circle and the AI will actually make it into a perfect circle. Zoom Workflows is also in beta right now. Beyond that, we also introduced Custom AI. Let's say you're in a pharmaceutical industry and you're using a particular terminology. You want the AI model to use that terminology, right? So it allows you to create your own language within that. What is Zoom's approach to AI development? Sameer: We have a federated model. This means we use our own LLMs as well as other industry-standard LLMs (OpenAI and Anthropic's models). That's how we shift between low-cost and high-cost GPUs. We also permit customers to bring their elements to a certain extent. That's a chargeable service. We are helping organisations break down their silos and improvise employee experience. We're quite happy for the customer to work where they want, and we support them with all of our tools and our AI and and our platform underneath. It's quite a different model to others. We've also made a commitment that we won't use customer data to train our models. But you're also in competition with these big tech companies, right? Most of their AI services seem to be bundled into their office suites. Steve: Yes but we don't walk into a Google or a Microsoft customer and say, 'What a terrible decision. You need to rip it all out. Stick Zoom in.' We go: 'Congratulations on your decision. Now, let's make sure you get the best value for money'. Not everything that's bundled works, and you're seeing how those bundles consistently change. What we allow you to do is to take the best video platform and plug it in, as well as the best phone platform if you want to use it. We've got Contact Center that you can plug in to make your Google or Microsoft Office environment sing much better.
