Limpopo driving school instructors, traffic examiners arrested for fraud
The Hawks in Limpopo have arrested four suspects at the Lephalale Police Station in a driving license fraud case.
Two driving school instructors, a traffic examiner, and a former traffic officer have been nabbed in connection with the fraudulent issuing of driver's licences.
The four were arrested on Wednesday morning in Limpopo by the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (Hawks) on allegations of fraud, corruption, and money laundering.
The suspects, aged between 37 and 61, were arrested in the Lephalale area and are expected to appear in the Lephalale Magistrate's Court today.
Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Lethunya Mmuroa, it is alleged that in 2021, examiners at the Lephalale Testing Station colluded with the driving school owners and defrauded the Department of Road and Transport by issuing learner's and driver's licenses without following proper procedures in exchange for bribes.
'The information was brought to the attention of the Polokwane-based Hawks' Serious Corruption Investigation (SCI) and the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC),' Mmuroa said.

On Friday, Mchunu released amendments to South African Police Service (SAPS) Regulations for the Hawks, which were first introduced in September 2010. In terms of the regulations, Hawks officers are to be subjected to integrity testing, including polygraph, alcohol, and drug tests. In addition, every member, irrespective of rank, shall, not later than April 30 of every year, disclose to the minister his or her registrable business interests, those registrable interests of his or her immediate family members, of which he or she is aware. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad Loading The regulations also empower the national head of the Hawks to conduct or authorise any member or any other person to conduct an integrity testing programme to test the integrity of any relevant member of the directorate. Integrity testing programmes may involve an act or omission (by a person who is conducting the integrity testing) that offers a relevant member whose integrity is being tested the opportunity to engage in behaviour, whether lawful or unlawful, in contravention of the SAPS's code of conduct or contravention of any law; or constituting misconduct in terms of the disciplinary regulations. According to the regulations, integrity testing also involves testing a member for the abuse of alcohol or drugs, or using the polygraph or a similar instrument. Mchunu's amendments make provision for a report detailing the outcome of the polygraph or similar test to be submitted to the integrity section for further investigation. '(The) integrity section must, as soon as such investigation is finalised, submit the investigation report to the head of the directorate and the vetting officers for further handling,' state the amendments. Hawks members who, without good reason, fail to provide a specimen of breath as required commit misconduct, and if found guilty, may be subject to the sanction for disobeying a lawful order, command, or instruction in terms of the SAPS disciplinary regulations. Specimens of breath from a relevant Hawks member when reporting for duty, while on duty or while on call for duty, may not have any evidence of alcohol when such member is tested.

Robbery suspect with toy gun shot dead by security officer in KZN
An off-duty security officer fatally shot a suspected robber who confronted him with a toy firearm in Ogunjini, KwaZulu-Natal, on Friday, 20 June. The security officer employed by a Durban-based company was returning home when a man approached him and drew what appeared to be a firearm, demanding his valuables. The officer responded by drawing his licensed 9mm pistol and firing two shots, striking the suspect in the chest. The wounded man dropped the weapon, later confirmed to be a toy and fled into nearby bushes, where he collapsed. Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) received a call for assistance at around 20:19. On arrival, officers found the suspect's body approximately five metres from the roadside. Officers recovered the toy firearm at the scene. The security officer told RUSA that four armed men robbed him on the same stretch of road a week earlier, taking his Samsung cellphone and wallet. Aserie Ndlovu murder case postponed as fifth suspect joins
The murder case was postponed after the newly-arrested fifth suspect opted to appoint a private lawyer. The case was postponed to allow the fifth suspect, Thabang Isaac Hlophe, to secure legal representation after joining the other four. Father Samuel Mogowe, Lucky Sikhosana, David Madisha, and Sello Skhalo Uoane previously abandoned their bail applications. Court appearance for formal joinder The five accused, who appeared in the KwaMhlanga Magistrate's Court in Mpumalanga on Friday, are facing two counts of kidnapping and murder each. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Monica Nyuswa said Friday's court appearance was for the formal joinder of Hlophe to the matter and a possible bail application on his behalf. 'However, the application did not proceed as Hlophe opted to appoint a private attorney to represent him,' Nyuswa said. All suspects have been remanded in custody. 'The [NPA] condemns acts of violent crime and remains resolute in pursuing justice for victims,' Nyuswa said. The accused were arrested on different occasions during a police intelligence-driven operation. The first suspect arrested was the last to be in the company of the missing couple. 'The second, third and fourth suspects that have been arrested were found with different vehicle parts believed to be those of the missing journalist,' police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said shortly after the arrests. 'One of those arrested is said to be a mechanic who builds and fixes cars in the KwaMhlanga area. Two VW Citi Golfs that were found in possession of the suspects have been seized,' Mathe added. Remains and DNA confirmation Skeletal remains with gunshot wounds, believed to be of the missing couple, were discovered in Rust de Winter along the Limpopo-Gauteng border in May after the suspects identified the location. Earlier this month, police confirmed that DNA analysis positively linked the remains to Ndlovu and Mdluli. 'The human remains were analysed and matched with the reference sample of the biological relatives of the deceased. A positive DNA match thus confirms that the discovered remains are those of the missing couple,' Mathe said at the time.
