Russia may be 'a friend' of Iran, but Moscow seems unlikely to offer Tehran much help

The Iranian foreign minister said on June 22 that he was heading to Russia to meet President Vladimir Putin on June 23, as Iran weighed a response to a wave of US strikes on its nuclear sites.
There was little sign that Russia was prepared to provide military assistance to Iran, its closest remaining Middle East ally, as it prioritised its own war against Ukraine. Iran has not received concrete support from any allies through 10 days of war with Israel.
In announcing the trip to Moscow, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called Russia 'a friend of Iran' and said that the two countries 'enjoy a strategic partnership and we always consult with each other and coordinate our positions'.
The Russian Foreign Ministry condemned the American military intervention in Iran, saying it had undermined global efforts to contain the proliferation of nuclear weapons. But the Kremlin has not publicly commented on the attacks, and it has not announced any tangible steps to help Iran.
The guarded reaction reflects Mr Putin's limited resources, with Russia in its fourth year of war in Ukraine.
Russia is trying to maintain warm relations with Iran's Middle Eastern rivals, including Saudi Arabia. The Kremlin is also likely to tread carefully on issues that may alienate US President Donald Trump, whose support – or, at least, acquiescence – it needs to secure a peace deal in Ukraine on its own terms.
In addition, Russia has benefited from a rise in oil prices caused by the growing unrest in the Middle East. NYTIMES

Photos posted by Ukraine's State Emergency Service showed rescuers leading people to safety from several buildings and structures on fire in the dark. The Service said a pregnant woman was among those rescued. The attack caused damage in three of the city's 10 districts, including in several apartment buildings, Klitschko said. An exit to the metro station in Kyiv's Sviatoshynskyi districts was also damaged, as well as an adjacent bus stop, Kyiv's officials said. Kyiv's deep metro stations have been used throughout the war as some of the city's safest bomb shelters. Russia's deadliest attack on Kyiv last week with hundreds of drones killed 28 people and injured more than 150, with Ukrainian officials saying that nearly 30 sites were hit during the multi-wave attack. Muslim countries to set up contact group to seek Israel-Iran de-escalation, World News
ANKARA — The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation said on Sunday (June 22) it would set up a ministerial contact group to establish regular contact with international and regional parties to support de-escalation efforts after US and Israeli strikes on Iran's nuclear sites. In a joint declaration following a meeting of the 57-member group's foreign ministers in Istanbul, the OIC condemned "the aggression of Israel" against Iran, stressing "the urgent need to stop Israeli attacks and their great concern regarding this dangerous escalation". It also urged the international community to take deterrent measures against attacks on Iran and "make Israel accountable for crimes committed". While the joint declaration from the meeting in Istanbul did not mention the overnight US strikes, the group also agreed on a separate 13-article resolution on the Israel-Iran conflict, in which it condemned both the Israeli and US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, adding the OIC was in full solidarity with Tehran. It also called on the International Atomic Energy Agency to "unequivocally condemn those attacks and to report those attacks to the Security Council," adding the "barbaric attacks" violated international law, according to a draft of the resolution. It said the OIC also called on Israel to "join without delay the treaty of Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and place all its nuclear facilities and activities under comprehensive IAEA safeguards." US ally Israel is the only country in the Middle East widely believed to have nuclear weapons and says it struck Iran to prevent Tehran from developing its own nuclear weapons. OIC members also reaffirmed Iran's "inherent right to self-defence and to take all necessary measures to fully protect its sovereignty and citizens, and to prevent recurrence of such criminal acts against its territory in future," the text showed.
