‘Stunning' creature with ‘balloon-like float' spotted on AL beach, officials say
A jellyfish-like creature — resembling an 18th century Portuguese warship — washed up along an Alabama beach, officials said.
'Stranded but still stunning,' the City of Orange Beach Coastal Resources said in an April 9 post on Facebook. 'Nature's beauty comes with a sting!'
Though interesting to look at, the Portuguese man-of-war's venom can be deadly to small fish and painful to humans, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
The creature has a colorful 'balloon-like float' and long tentacles that can be up to 30 feet, NOAA said.
Man-of-wars are often found in tropical and subtropical waters, according to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.
Commonly mistaken for jellyfish, man-of-wars are made up of a 'colony of numerous organisms (called polyps) that live together,' experts said.
Man-of-wars have also recently been spotted on beaches in Southwest Florida, meteorologist Matt Devitt said in an April 8 Facebook post.
'Their stings are pretty painful, lasting up to 1-3 hours,' he warned. 'Make sure to avoid!'
Orange Beach is about a 25-mile drive southwest from Pensacola, Florida.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Thursday some geomagnetic storms will likely disrupt Earth's magnetic field soon, which could make the northern lights visible in several states tonight. TK NOAA forecast a Kp index of five on a scale of nine for Thursday night, suggesting the northern lights will become brighter as they become more active while moving farther from the poles. Thursday's auroral forecast will likely increase through the night and into Friday morning, when some 'minor' or greater geomagnetic storms are expected, according to NOAA's three-day forecast. Calmer auroral activity is expected through Saturday night, with a maximum Kp index of just over three and two for Friday and Saturday, respectively, NOAA's projections suggest. The northern lights have the highest chance of being seen throughout Canada, with a minimal opportunity—marked by a 'view line'—forecast through northern Iowa and other northern states. A lesser chance is expected in northern Washington, northern Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, northern Minnesota, northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan, with a near-zero chance forecast for parts of northern Wyoming, South Dakota, northern Iowa, northern New York, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine. NOAA recommends traveling to the north and finding a high, north-facing vantage point away from light pollution. If in the right area in optimal weather conditions, the aurora borealis can be visible even with lower geomagnetic activity, including a Kp index of three or four, the agency said, noting the northern lights are best seen within at least two hours of 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. local time. Photography experts told National Geographic a wide-angle lens and an aperture or F-stop of four or lower are recommended, though other settings like ISO and shutter speed will likely need to be adjusted depending on the strength of the aurora borealis. With a smartphone, the experts suggest using a tripod to stabilize the image long enough to capture the northern lights displays. They also recommend disabling flash and enabling night mode. An increase in northern lights displays throughout the U.S. follows a peak in solar activity reached in October 2024, NOAA and NASA said. This peak features more solar flares and coronal mass ejections, which produce the northern lights as electrons from these events collide with oxygen and nitrogen in the Earth's atmosphere. Though the northern lights can be seen throughout the year, they are most visible between late September and March when nights are longer, experts said.

He got to Iran on June 2, but his journey took a dangerous turn when Israel launched its airstrikes on Iran. "We're not going to Tehran after all. The situation is too dangerous," said Andersen in an Instagram video. That's the moment Andersen realized he had to change his biking plans from Tehran and head to Azerbaijan. "There's likely police blockages into the city and out of the city. I would truly be arrested," said Anderson. He posted the video on social media from a Saturday vlog, and it has been viewed more than a million times. What they're saying FOX 9 spoke to Andersen Wednesday after he was safe and sound. In his words, things got dicey when he had to do exit interviews. The first interview went fine. But then the second one. "They hold me into like a, like an army barracks with a couple of Europeans, Portuguese nationals," said Andersen. Andersen couldn't document that part of his travels, but he describes his feeling when he was in that room being interviewed. "This really sketchy room where, like, Okay, I've got like, a 50% chance of never walking out of here," said Anderson. "It makes, really, makes me think about all the people that can't leave, though it's like, I'm lucky to be here, out of here. But yeah, normal, everyday Iranians and Israelis who don't have the same good fortune, just stuck in the in the fallout of this, this whole thing," said Anderson. What's next: Andersen already biked from Alaska to Argentina nine years ago. His final destination is Japan, and he hopes to get there by Christmas.
