National Human Rights Institution receives Chairman of the Arab Charter on Human Rights Committee
Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: As part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen institutional collaboration and promote the exchange of expertise with regional and international entities, the National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) welcomed His Excellency Counselor Mohammed Saeed Al Shehhi, Chairman of the Arab Charter on Human Rights Committee, to its headquarters in Abu Dhabi. He was accompanied by Mr. Osama Al Wakeel, Secretary of the Committee.
The delegation was received by His Excellency Maqsoud Kruse, Chairperson of the NHRI; Dr. Abdul Aziz Al Noman and Ms. Ameirah Al Seraidi, Members of the NHRI Board of Trustees; His Excellency Dr. Saeed Al Ghfeli, Secretary-General of the NHRI; and Ms. Fajer Al Haidan, Head of Agreements and Reports Section.
During the visit, the delegation was briefed on the NHRI's mandate and functions as an independent national institution, and its central role in supporting and advancing the human rights agenda in the United Arab Emirates. Discussions highlighted the NHRI's alignment with international, regional, and national human rights frameworks.
The meeting also served as a platform to explore opportunities for enhancing joint cooperation and coordination in the implementation of the Arab Charter on Human Rights. Both sides expressed their commitment to advancing institutional efforts to adopt best practices in promoting and protecting fundamental rights and freedoms.
H.E. Maqsoud Kruse congratulated H.E. Counselor Mohammed Saeed Al Shehhi on his recent appointment as Chairman of the Committee, and praised the visit as a testament to the Committee's commitment to constructive engagement and regional dialogue. He emphasized the importance of such exchanges in reinforcing a shared culture of human rights and strengthening broader Arab cooperation.

Israel and Iran entered a second week of hostilities with air strikes overnight, amid growing uncertainty over US President Donald Trump's willingness to intervene in the conflict and his dismissal of European diplomatic efforts to solve the crisis. It said the commander 'was responsible for all weapons transfers from the Iranian regime to its proxies across the Middle East'. There was no confirmation from the IRGC on the killing of the two men. Tehran said, a day before, it would not negotiate over its nuclear programme while under threat following efforts by Europe to keep peace talks alive. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met his counterparts from Britain, France and Germany, known as the E3, in Geneva on Friday. Speaking shortly after the meeting, Mr Trump appeared to dismiss European diplomatic efforts. 'We've been speaking to Iran and we'll see what happens,' he said, adding that he believed that talks in Geneva had not been successful. The Israeli military said it had launched a wave of attacks against missile storage and launch infrastructure sites in Iran. Israel began attacking Iran on June 13, saying its longtime enemy was on the verge of developing nuclear weapons. Iran, which says its nuclear programme is only for peaceful purposes, retaliated with missile and drone strikes on Israel. Israel is widely assumed to possess nuclear weapons. UAE President's advisor warns against prolonged Iran-Israel conflict

Gargash said the war was "setting back" the Gulf region. "The longer a war takes, the more dangerous it becomes," he told journalists in a briefing on Friday. "I think any extended confrontation or war between Israel and Iran will only bring a very difficult aftermath." US President Donald Trump has given Iran a "maximum" of two weeks to negotiate before possible US air strikes, but Tehran said it would not hold talks while under attack. "De-escalation is extremely important," Gargash said. "We still feel that there is a path back to negotiations on these issues." The Middle East is still dealing with the repercussions of the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq, which toppled Saddam Hussein but left the country divided and destabilised. One major risk of the current war is disruption to the Strait of Hormuz between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula, which carries one-fifth of global oil output. Israel says it killed head of Palestine Corps in IRGC's overseas arm
Israel's Defence Minister Israel Katz said on Saturday that the military had killed a commander in the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' overseas arm in a strike on an apartment block in the Iranian city of Qom. The dead man was Saeed Izadi, who led the Palestine corps of the Quds Force, Mr Katz said in a statement. There was no confirmation from the IRGC. The Quds Force built up a network of Arab allies known as the Axis of Resistance, establishing Hezbollah in Lebanon in 1982 and supporting the Palestinian militant Islamist group Hamas in the Gaza Strip. But Iran-aligned network has suffered major blows over the last two years, as Israeli offensives since Hamas' October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel have weakened both the Palestinian group and Hezbollah. Mr Katz said Mr Izadi financed and armed Hamas during the initial attacks, describing the commander's killing as a 'major achievement for Israeli intelligence and the air force'. Israel Defence Forces said in a statement that Mr Izadi was "one of the main orchestrators" of the October 7 Hamas attacks. "He was responsible for military coordination between the senior commanders of the IRGC and the Iranian regime with key figures in Hamas," the stat Mr Izadi was under US and UK sanctions over what they said were his ties to Hamas and Palestinian militant faction Islamic Jihad, which also took part in the October 7 attacks. Last Friday, Israel launched a large‑scale air and covert strike campaign – including Mossad-backed drone operations – against military and nuclear sites in Iran. The attacks killed senior commanders in IRGC and nuclear scientists, and damaged nuclear sites such as Natanz and Isfahan. Israel said its sweeping assault was necessary to prevent Tehran from moving closer to acquiring a nuclear weapon. At least 657 people, including 263 civilians, have been killed in Iran and more than 2,000 wounded, according to a Washington-based Iranian human rights group. Iran has retaliated by firing 450 missiles and 1,000 drones at Israel, according to Israeli army estimates. Most have been shot down by Israel's air defences, but at least 24 people in Israel have been killed and hundreds wounded.
