Alex Belfield's release from prison forces stalking victims to relive their fears
Alex Belfield was condemned as 'the Jimmy Savile of trolling' when he was jailed for a stalking campaign against broadcasters including Jeremy Vine.
His victims have now spoken of their fears as the 45-year-old is released from prison, from where he has been plotting a comeback and a summer tour of self-promotion.
The former BBC Radio Leeds host turned YouTuber appeared to make light of his crimes while at HMP Fosse Way in Leicestershire, describing himself on his website as a 'convicted talker' and 'political prisoner'.
In fact, he was jailed for five and a half years in September 2022 for stalking four men, including Vine, who told the trial that watching Belfield's hateful output was 'like swimming in sewage'.
For the former BBC Radio Leeds presenter Liz Green, one of four women subjected to a campaign of abuse by Belfield, his release on licence at the halfway point of his sentence comes just as she was beginning to move on from her decade-long ordeal.
'I wish he had stayed in for five and a half years,' the 61-year-old said as she recalled the harassment campaign that took a toll on her physical and mental health. 'I was suicidal. It made me very ill. My hair fell out. I withdrew from the world for a while. I had therapy, and I'm just about now coming out of the other end. I'm quite heavily medicated – I don't mind saying that because I think people should be open about their mental health and why it happens. It really did affect me.'
In 2011, Belfield had suggested in veiled terms that Green should be sent to Auschwitz after she presented a documentary about the concentration camp. It was the start of a 10-year campaign of harassment against her, which included emails, YouTube videos and tweets.
While Belfield was cleared of stalking Green, and also Helen Thomas, Rozina Breen and Stephanie Hirst, all former BBC employees, the trial judge ruled he had targeted them in 'a personal campaign of revenge', leaving them in need of psychological support. Belfield was handed an indefinite restraining order preventing him from contacting the women.
Green, who lives in West Yorkshire, became frightened when, before his release, Belfield began promoting six books he had written in prison, his Voice of Reason YouTube channel, and a summer speaking tour to 'tell all and expose his side of the story'.
He appeared to make light of his crimes on his website, claiming he would be performing in a pantomime jokingly dubbed Jack and the Bean Stalker in 2026. His website also featured the banner: 'Thank you for stalking AlexBelfield.com – Officially a political prisoner since 2023.' The jokes which were first reported by Nottinghamshire Live have since been taken down.
Green said it was ludicrous that Belfield was 'grifting' after causing so much suffering. 'I live my life because of him in a very rigid, protected way,' she said. 'It's been a good 15 years of my life. And when I say I'm coming out of it, I don't wake up depressed, I don't wake up anxious. Anxiety is the worst thing I think anybody can have. Some days I actually feel happy.'
For the theatre blogger Philip Dehany, who was stalked by Belfield, the YouTuber's 'horrendous' conduct proves he is not remorseful. Dehany, 43, who is pursuing a civil claim for harassment against Belfield, said: 'I can't imagine how difficult prison would have been, but I had hoped he would want to put it all behind him. All I want to do is be able to move on. But because he's locked me into this civil case and because he's writing these books, he appears to be reluctant to move on.'
Green now hopes Belfield will go on to 'live a decent, honest, quiet life' by adhering to his licence conditions, which every offender is subject to so they do not seek to gain income from their crime. 'What I am concerned about when he comes out is that it's free publicity for him to spout his shite about being an oppressed political prisoner,' she said.

Belfield's website has featured a 2,300-word statement denouncing his 'bespoke and unprecedented' licence conditions, saying he would be 'kidnapped' back to prison should he 'offend any of his captors' with his upcoming projects.
'Alex's only option is to appear in silence and release 6x 500 pages completely blank to remain within the intentionally ambiguous licence conditions. I think we can all agree even Hitler would argue this is a step too far for a man who has served his sentence, who is 100% rehabilitated, signed off by psychology without a single concern, and supposedly back in society protected by human rights laws,' the homepage said before it was taken down on Wednesday.
The website added that Belfield had 'endured the biggest witch-hunt in media history' and that he 'can't wait TO MAKE GREAT BRITAIN LAUGH AGAIN and return to mocking the afflicted'.
Belfield emailed his supporters on 6 June saying his 'long-awaited comeback' had been postponed and that he would be refunding tickets to his tour. But it claimed copies of his autobiography, His Own Worst Enema, had already shipped. While the email did not mention his licence conditions, it said: 'There are dark forces at work behind the scenes, making it impossible for Alex to move forward as planned.'
The Ministry of Justice would not comment on Belfield's licence conditions but said: 'Offenders released on licence are subject to strict conditions and can be recalled to prison immediately if they break the rules.'

Woman found stabbed in house explosion ‘gave her life to helping the vulnerable'
A woman who was found stabbed following a gas explosion at her home 'gave her life to helping the vulnerable and the disadvantaged', her family has said. Annabel Rook, 46, was found fatally injured at a house in Dumont Road, Stoke Newington, north-east London, just before 5am on Tuesday. Ms Rook worked for charity MamaSuze CIC, which she co-founded, that supported refugee and migrant women, some who had fled domestic violence, with art and drama activities. In a statement issued via the Metropolitan Police, her family said they were 'struggling to come to terms with this terrible tragedy'. 'We have lost our beautiful daughter, sister, friend and mother. Annabel was a truly wonderful woman,' the tribute read. 'She touched the hearts of so many. 'She gave her life to helping the vulnerable and the disadvantaged whether it was in refugee camps in Africa or setting up MamaSuze in London, to enhance the lives of survivors of forced displacement and gender-based violence. 'We would really appreciate it if our privacy could be respected.' A 44-year-old man was arrested at the address on suspicion of murder with police previously describing the victim's death as 'a domestic-related incident'. He was later discharged and released into police custody, the force said. John Martin, artistic director of PAN Intercultural Arts, where Ms Rook worked with young refugees for 16 years until 2022, previously described her as 'a larger-than-life character' who joined the charity as a volunteer with lots of energy. In a personal tribute, Mr Martin told the PA news agency: 'Annabel's energy brought a lot to the women and gave them new hope. 'This was her speciality, I think – a sort of a boundless optimism, a boundless self-confidence, which she transferred onto other people.' 'She spent her life, certainly the 10, 12 years that I knew her, fighting against women who had been abused, fighting against violence to women, and the irony is that she then suffered from violence to women in the way that she died yesterday,' he said. MamaSuze said in a statement shared on Tuesday that it was 'devastated by the loss of our beloved co-founder' and that she treated everyone with 'warmth and kindness'. 'Annabel was a profound force for good in the world, dedicating her working life to supporting women survivors,' it added. Police were called at 04.57am on Tuesday to reports of a gas explosion with a person trapped inside the property. The front bay window of the property was completely blown out that morning, with debris including plants, wooden shutters and glass scattered across the street. Two children, aged seven and nine, were also taken to hospital as a precaution following the incident but are not thought to have been inside the home when the explosion happened. Six fire engines and 40 firefighters were also called to the scene. Anyone with information that could assist the investigation into the incident has been urged to contact police on 101 quoting CAD 926/17June. A Love Island star has been caught up in a scary hot air balloon ordeal. Liberty Poole took to social media to reveal her scary experience to her fans during a recent trip with pals. In a clip posted to TikTok, the 25-year-old could be seen lying on the floor of the basket of the hot balloon as a number of loud bangs could be heard. Liberty also jolted as the lighter-than-air aircraft made contact with the ground, whilst screams from other passengers were audible. Her post left fans concerned as they flooded her post with worried comments, prompting Liberty to address the clip. In a further video, she said: 'I didn't realise when you get into a hot air balloon it's not upright, you lie on the floor to get in.' She continued: 'So you're actually not strapped in, nothing, you only have this tiny bit of rope to hold, as the hot air balloon goes up, the basket just sits up. 'But as you come down, you have to go the other way, so we were told to basically just hold onto this rope and sit and almost do like a wall sit, crouch down to land. 'However, I don't know if that landing was normal, because we were getting knocked left, right, up, down. 'Like it was so chaotic, I don't know if every single hot air balloon lands like that cause to me that's not right, why are people go on a hot air balloon if that happened all the time?' Liberty concluded: 'I'm just glad we survived to be honest.' Reacting, one fan said: 'Yeah it's not normal to get in like that.' A second wrote: 'It's not! It's also not normal for to get in it like that either.' 'Around the same time an air balloon crashed and someone passed away, you guys were so lucky,' said a third. It comes after a hot air balloon caught fire and tumbled from the sky in Brazil's southern state of Santa Catarina on Saturday, killing eight people, while 13 jumped to safety. The horrifying crash happened in the country's Praia Grande region - a popular destination for hot air ballooning. Footage shared by local news outlet G1 showed billows of smoke coming from the balloon in flames as it hurled toward the ground. In a separate video circulating on social media, two people can be seen falling through the air as the fire spreads onboard the aircraft. Thirteen people survived and were taken to hospitals, Santa Catarina's military fire brigade said, adding that 21 people were on board including the pilot. Chief of Police of the State of Santa Catarina, Ulisses Gabriel, said the causes of the incident are being investigated, with the main hypotheses being adverse weather conditions or human error. 'The wind was quite strong, and several people were holding the balloon when it first left the site. In fact, there was a truck pulling the balloon with a cable, which was moving very intensely from side to side', he told Brazilian broadcaster Globo News.
