Kolkata's team plants trees for every run scored

Time of India31-05-2025

The 2025 edition of
'
Runs to Roots
'
, a green initiative by Kolkata's premier T20 team, was launched this week with a tree planting ceremony at Banabitan Biodiversity Park. Team co-owner Juhi Chawla-Mehta, along with players Manish Pandey, Vaibhav Arora, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, and Anukul Roy, planted the first saplings of the season.
The initiative, now in its second year under the
'Runs to Roots'
name, pledges to plant one tree for every run scored by the team throughout the ongoing T20 season. Last year, this commitment translated into 2,667 new trees — one for each run scored — across the region.
What began in 2017 as a six-for-a-sapling concept has since grown into a broader, season-long campaign that directly links cricketing milestones to ecological impact.
With every boundary, single, and quick double, the team is aiming for greener cities and cleaner air.
'Each sapling is a step toward a more sustainable tomorrow'
'Cricket has always brought people together, and with 'Runs to Roots', we're using that shared passion to give back to the planet,' said Juhi Chawla-Mehta, co-owner and long-time advocate for environmental causes. 'Each sapling is a step towards cleaner air, healthier communities, and a more sustainable tomorrow.'
Echoing the sentiment, Venky Mysore, the team's CEO, said: 'Our philosophy is rooted in responsibility. We want our sporting success to leave a positive, long-term impact beyond the field. This initiative is about converting runs into roots — literally.'
Urban Green, Growing Clean
The focus this season is once again on protecting and expanding urban green spaces — starting with sites like Banabitan and extending to community spaces across the region. The team plans to share regular updates, allowing fans to track the number of trees planted as the run tally rises through the season.
In tying performance with purpose, Kolkata's home team is reminding fans that every cheer from the stands can also echo through forests and parks — growing green, one run at a time.

Rishabh Pant's next-level mind game; 'sledges' England wicketkeeper into blunder after six against Shoaib Bashir

India have built a unique leadership combo in Test cricket. While the calm and composed Shubman Gill leads as captain, his deputy Rishabh Pant is cut from a different cloth — lively, vocal behind the stumps, part commentator, part motivator, and always ready with a clever mind game or two. Sachin Tendulkar recently exposed one such moment, but another slipped under the radar on Day 2 in Leeds. Rishabh Pant smashed his seventh career ton on Saturday Incidentally, both happened during India's first innings batting, both during a Shoaib Bashir over. The one that Sachin revealed pertained to the use of the Hindi language in which Pant and Gill conversed, especially during the overs from the spinner, who is of Pakistani origin and hence is well acquainted with the language. Taking to social media, the batting legend reckoned that the ploy was used to unsettle Bashir. Later in the same innings, shortly after Pant notched up his seventh career Test century, he sledged England wicket-keeper Jamie Smith into a blunder. In what was caught on Cricbuzz commentary at the start of the 104th over, Pant was heard telling Smith that "fielders are all back, again." He then went down on one knee against the flighted delivery from Bashir and slog swept it over square for a six. Bashir dished out a similar one on the next ball and Pant danced down the track for another maximum, but failed to connect as the delivery spun past the bat. It presented England with an easy opportunity to dismiss the Indian batter, but Smith fumbled. The ball had bounced a fair bit, and the wicketkeeper, too, had hurried to dislodge the bails, and in a bid didn't collect the ball. "Pant sledged the keeper into a mistake," Cricbuzz noted. Pant eventually finished with 134 runs. It was the third century in the innings after similar knocks from opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Gill as India notched up their highest total in an away Test since making 622/7 dec in the New Year's Test in Sydney in 2019. This was also their first 400-plus total in England since 664 at the Oval in 2007. However, it was also the lowest total that included three individual tons, as India lost their last seven wickets for just 41 runs.

'Suja diya maar maar ke!' Rishabh Pant's hilarious stump mic moment goes viral

Rishabh Pant (Photo by) NEW DELHI: Team India's vice-captain Rishabh Pant lit up Day 2 of the Headingley Test not just with his bat, but also with his words. In a now-viral video, Pant was caught on the stump mic saying, 'Suja diya yaar maar maar ke, ek hi jagah maare ja raha hai' — roughly translating to, 'He's made me swollen, man, just by hitting the same spot again and again!' The comment, directed at partner Ravindra Jadeja , came right after an aggressive phase of his innings. Watch: Ironically, Pant was dismissed on the very next ball, pinned lbw by Josh Tongue after shouldering arms to a delivery that nipped back sharply. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Despite the dismissal, Pant's 134 (off 178 balls) was a masterclass in controlled aggression, featuring fearless strokeplay and tactical brilliance. Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar later praised Pant's unusual 'falling paddle sweep', calling it 'intentional and extremely clever'. Poll Was Rishabh Pant's dismissal a turning point in the match? Yes, definitely Possibly Not really No, it didn't matter According to the legendary batter, the shot allowed Pant to scoop the ball with precision over leg slip, especially effective against Bashir. Tendulkar also pointed out the strategic mid-over conversations in Hindi between Shubman Gill and Pant, suggesting they were designed to disrupt the young spinner's rhythm. Yashasvi Jaiswal credits Shubman Gill after maiden Test ton in England: 'I love it' Gill and Pant's 209-run stand was the cornerstone of India's imposing 471-run total, following Yashasvi Jaiswal's fluent 101. Gill's composed 147 and Pant's flamboyant ton put England's attack under severe pressure -- until both fell within quick succession, triggering a collapse. While India lost their last seven wickets for just 41 runs, Jasprit Bumrah ensured they stayed in command with a three-wicket burst, including the vital scalp of Joe Root. But Ollie Pope 's gritty unbeaten 100 kept England in the game at 209/3. Follow all the live updates, scores, and highlights from the India vs England Test match here .
