
AI is the horizontal tech that applies universally: Sundar Pichai
Ten years ago, in August, when Sundar Pichai took over as CEO of Google, few could have foreseen that we'd be living in an artificial intelligence (AI)-led world a decade later.
Did Pichai envision this transformation on the horizon? He doesn't let us in on the secret, but there are hints. Google began investing in tensor processing units (TPUs)—crucial to training AI models—a decade ago. They probably had an idea of what lay ahead.
'Part of what has always appealed to me about Google—and the founders wrote it in their letter—is that we will take a deep technology approach to drive progress in people's lives. It's why we invested in TPUs 10 years ago, before the current moment, and why we've been investing in quantum computing for the last decade. We will continue to do so until it becomes a reality,' Pichai said during the closing session of this year's I/O conference on day two.

That long-term vision is why Google has found itself in a position to reset benchmarks with its AI offerings—prompting responses from rivals including OpenAI, xAI, and Anthropic. It's a reflection of how competitive the AI landscape has become. At this year's Google I/O developer conference, the tech giant unveiled a bold vision for its Gemini model-led strategy.
This includes an 'Agentic AI' vision for Gemini, which Google classifies as a universal AI assistant. Gemini competes with OpenAI's GPT, Microsoft's GPT-based Copilot, xAI's Grok, and Anthropic's Claude. None of these competitors currently offer the broad portfolio of intelligent capabilities that Google has now extended to Gemini and its creative models.
Google has made it clear that it has no intention of slowing down—it's the competition that must find ways to keep pace. Apple, for instance, is still working to piece together its Apple Intelligence suite, which has been present in its hardware since late last year. Earlier today, OpenAI announced it is acquiring io, a hardware company founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive. The expectation is that OpenAI will now be better positioned to launch hardware products underpinned by its AI models.

'We've been innovating and shipping at a relentless pace,' says Pichai. In previous years, the I/O keynote featured the biggest software and developer-focused announcements. This year, however, the weeks leading up to the keynote saw a steady stream of releases—the Gemini 2.5 Pro preview, the coding agent AlphaEvolve, and significant updates to Gemini Live on Android devices, to name a few.
Among these innovations is Flow, an AI filmmaking tool that allows users to create cinematic clips, scenes, and stories using DeepMind's most advanced models—Veo, Imagen, and Gemini. This is the kind of tool that could concern companies like Adobe and Canva, not just Google's AI competitors.
'We've always taken a foundational, deep research approach, coupled with a science and technology strategy, but we've relentlessly worked to bring it into the hands of as many people as possible,' Pichai says. 'Staying close to research' is one of the most fulfilling aspects of his role at Google. He highlights his proximity to Koray Kavukcuoglu's team, which is driving innovation at a rapid pace. Kavukcuoglu is the CTO of Google DeepMind.
'We're in a moment where AI, as a horizontal technology, applies across everything. We take a forward-looking view and invest accordingly. Some ideas transition quickly into products; others take time,' says Pichai. 'What I'm proud of is the depth and breadth of the research we are undertaking at Google DeepMind and Google Research.'

He discusses how Google is layering its core Search business with more powerful, Gemini-led AI. At I/O 2025, the company announced features like AI Mode in Search, Deep Research, and Search Live, which uses a phone's camera for added context.
'We genuinely believe one of the value propositions in Search is that people use it to find what they're looking for in the world. We are increasingly connecting them to that—with more context. And that's the core experience. AI is going to enhance that in the same way. We think there's deep value in the ecosystem and in a diversity of perspectives, and we want to bring that to users,' Pichai explains.
For Google, how users interact with its services remains critical—especially as interfaces evolve, with AI playing a larger role in Search, generative models, and creative workflows. These advancements are poised to gain further relevance with video model Veo 3 and imaging model Imagen 4.

'We spoke about intelligence, personalization, and agents as the three frontiers we're pushing forward with in the coming year. For consumers, this will improve user experience, reduce friction, save time, and free them to do other things,' he says. One example is the ability to try on clothes virtually—potentially with greater accuracy—by uploading a personal photo. It's a time-saving feature for both avid and reluctant shoppers alike. And it's part of how Search is evolving.

The firm is finalizing details of an agreement with Premji Invest — the family office of Wipro Ltd. founder Azim Premji — and State Bank of India, the people said, asking not to be identified because the talks are private. A transaction could value SBI General Insurance at as much as $4.5 billion, the people said. Discussions are ongoing and no final decision has been made, the people said. Warburg Pincus declined to comment. Premji Invest and State Bank of India didn't respond to requests for comment. Premji Invest and New York-based Warburg Pincus agreed to buy 16.01 per cent and 9.99 per cent of SBI General Insurance, respectively, in 2019 from Insurance Australia Group Ltd. in a transaction that was completed in 2020. Based in Mumbai, SBI General Insurance was established in 2009 and offers non-life insurance products including health, motoring, home and travel, according to its website. State Bank of India owns around 70 per cent in the company.

Italian energy major Eni sells 20% stake in renewable arm Plenitude to Ares for $2.3 billion: Details here
Italian energy group Eni SpA has sold a 20 per cent holding in its renewable business Plenitude to Ares, a US-based alternative credit management firm The deal is set at about $2.3 billion, marking the holding company's second sale of a stake in the unit, reported Bloomberg. The transaction is based on the value of Plenitude's equity shares, which is around $11.4 billion. The enterprise value stood at more than $13.7 billion, the renewable business said in a statement. Eni said in May it was in exclusive talks with the company over the sale, the news agency said. 'The valuation of Plenitude has positive implications for the stock as it allows further value to be unlocked in one of Eni's satellites,' reported Bloomberg citing Massimo Bonisoli, an analyst at Equita Group SpA. The company completed the sale of 10 per cent of Plenitude to Energy Infrastructure Partners earlier this year. Eni shares remained stable as of 10:33 am local time, while the Milan stock index fell by 0.6 per cent. Eni stock initially gained as much as 0.9 per cent. The energy major has said it also plans to sell stakes in its businesses in biofuels and mobility arm Enilive, where US-based KKR & Co bought a 25 per cent holding earlier this year. It is in exclusive talks for a stake in its carbon capture and storage unit, the news agency said. Milan-based Plenitude was set up to hold Eni's energy retailing and renewables businesses. Initial plans for a public listing of Plenitude have been put on hold. Ares, an alternative asset manager overseeing nearly $550 billion, has recently opened an office in Milan, Italy's financial hub, in order to expand its business in that market.

Colleagues or overlords? The debate over AI bots has been raging but needn't
There's the Terminator school of perceiving artificial intelligence (AI) risks, in which we'll all be killed by our robot overlords. And then there's one where, if not friends exactly, the machines serve as valued colleagues. A Japanese tech researcher is arguing that our global AI safety approach hinges on reframing efforts to achieve this benign partnership. In 2023, as the world was shaken by the release of ChatGPT, a pair of successive warnings came from Silicon Valley of existential threats from powerful AI tools. Elon Musk led a group of experts and industry executives in calling for a six-month pause in developing advanced systems until we figured out how to manage risks. Then hundreds of AI leaders—including Sam Altman of OpenAI and Demis Hassabis of Alphabet's DeepMind—sent shockwaves with a statement that warned: 'Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks, such as pandemics and nuclear war." Despite all the attention paid to the potentially catastrophic dangers, the years since have been marked by AI 'accelerationists' largely drowning out AI doomers. Companies and countries have raced towards being the first to achieve superhuman AI, brushing off the early calls to prioritise safety. And it has all left the public very confused. But maybe we've been viewing this all wrong. Hiroshi Yamakawa, a prominent AI scholar from the University of Tokyo who has spent the past three decades studying the technology, is now arguing that the most promising route to a sustainable future is to let humans and AIs 'live in symbiosis and flourish together, protecting each other's well-being and averting catastrophic risks." Yamakawa hit a nerve because while he recognizes the threats noted in 2023, he argues for a working path toward coexistence with super-intelligent machines—especially at a time when nobody is halting development over fears of falling behind. In other words, if we can't beat AI from becoming smarter than us, we're better off joining it as an equal partner. 'Equality' is the sensitive part. Humans want to keep believing they are superior, not equal to machines. Also Read: Rahul Matthan: AI models aren't copycats but learners just like us His statement has generated a lot of buzz in Japanese academic circles, receiving dozens of signatories so far, including from some influential AI safety researchers overseas. In an interview with Nikkei Asia, he argued that cultural differences in Asia are more likely to enable seeing machines as peers instead of as adversaries. While the United States has produced AI-inspired characters like the Terminator from the eponymous Hollywood movie, the Japanese have envisioned friendlier companions like Astro Boy or Doraemon, he told the news outlet. Beyond pop culture, there's some truth to this cultural embrace. At just 25%, Japanese people had the lowest share of respondents who say products using AI make them nervous, according to a global Ipsos survey last June, compared to 64% of Americans. It's likely his comments will fall on deaf ears, though, like so many of the other AI risk warnings. Development has its own momentum. And whether the machines will ever get to a point where they could spur 'civilization extinction' remains an extremely heated debate. It's fair to say that some of the industry's focus on far-off, science-fiction scenarios is meant to distract from the more immediate harm that the technology could bring—whether that's job displacement, allegations of copyright infringement or reneging on climate change goals. Still, Yamakawa's proposal is a timely re-up on an AI safety debate that has languished in recent years. These discussions can't just rely on eyebrow-raising warnings and the absence of governance. Also Read: You're absolutely right, as the AI chatbot says With the exception of Europe, most jurisdictions have focused on loosening regulations in the hope of not falling behind. Policymakers can't afford to turn a blind eye until it's too late. It also shows the need for more safety research beyond just the companies trying to create and sell these products, like in the social-media era. These platforms were obviously less incentivized to share their findings with the public. Governments and universities must prioritise independent analysis on large-scale AI risks. Meanwhile, as the global tech industry has been caught up in a race to create computer systems that are smarter than humans, it's yet to be determined whether we'll ever get there. But setting godlike AI as the goalpost has created a lot of counter-productive fear-mongering.
