This is what's known as the Productivity Paradox.
The productivity paradox is the frustration of working long hours and putting in a lot of effort, only to find that you've made little real progress toward your goals.
To break free from this cycle, we need to distinguish between busyness and true productivity.
Being busy means being occupied with tasks and constant motion while being productive means achieving meaningful results and making consistent progress toward your goals. It's about working smarter, not necessarily harder.
The problem with busyness is that it often comes at the expense of focus and prioritization. When we juggle too many tasks at once, our attention becomes scattered, and we struggle to commit to any single task fully.
Additionally, constant busyness can lead to burnout and exhaustion, particularly when self-care is neglected.
How to avoid the Productivity Paradox this week
Try these practical steps:
Write down three meaningful outcomes you want to achieve by Friday — not just tasks, but actual results.
Ask yourself daily: Am I making progress toward those outcomes?
Don't aim to do more. Aim to do more of what matters.
Avoid multitasking. It decreases efficiency and increases the likelihood of mistakes.
Say no when needed. Overcommitting drains time and energy from what truly matters to you.
Prioritise tasks based on urgency and importance, and tackle them accordingly.
Set clear goals. Use the SMART framework: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.
Finally, amid all your work commitments, remember to take care of yourself. Step away from your desk, practice mindfulness, eat well, and maintain a life outside of work to recharge.

Water supply to return to Polokwane after successful pump upgrade POLOKWANE – Polokwane residents can expect water supply to resume by midday today (June 20) following the successful installation of new pumps at the Olifantspoort Plant's Pump Stations 2 and 3. Lepelle Northern Water (LNW) confirmed that the pumps were commissioned and brought online at 06:00 this morning after a 48-hour planned shutdown that began on Tuesday. LNW spokesperson Joe Makhafola said the shutdown allowed for the first phase of upgrades at the Olifantspoort Scheme, which is key to improving long-term water reliability in the city. 'The critical work was completed on schedule by a team of engineers, contractors and operations personnel. The upgrade comes ahead of Limpopo's high-demand summer period, where water shortages continue to pose a major challenge,' he said. Makhafola added that the broader infrastructure renewal project is designed to strengthen the city's current and future water supply needs. A second shutdown is scheduled for the first week of July to allow for the installation of additional pumps. Park Village Auction's Clive Lazarus described the sale as signalling the 'beginning of the end' of the seven-year saga. The viewing of the properties, handled by Park Village Auctions, will be held between 6 and 20 July 2025. The first mansion will be the triple-storey residence at 5 Saxonwold Drive, featuring eight bedrooms, extensive living and entertainment areas, an indoor swimming pool, an expansive rooftop patio, staff accommodation, and ample garaging.
