Kemi Badenoch thinks people leaving Conservatives is a ‘good thing'

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has said that defections from her party are a "good thing" because those who are leaving "don't believe in conservatism".
Her comments come as Nigel Farage 's Reform party has taken a steady stream of councillors from the Tories in Scotland in recent months.
On Thursday, Lauren Knight, who represents the Huntly, Strathbogie and Howe of Alford ward on Aberdeenshire Council, defected to Reform. The party has claimed to have 11,000 members north of the border.
Reform recently surged in the Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse Holyrood by-election, rising to third place and coming close to the SNP in the seat, which was won by Labour 's Davy Russell.
Despite the perceived threat to the Tories from Reform, Ms Badenoch said she did not have an issue with people leaving for the party.
She told journalists at the Scottish Tory conference: 'Reform are not a centre-right party.
'This is a party that's talking about nationalising oil and gas.
'This is a party that wants to increase benefits at a time when the benefits bill is so high.
'So if Nigel Farage is taking out of the Conservative Party the people who are not Conservatives, then I'm quite fine with that.
' One of the things that we ned to do is make sure that people see an authentic Conservative Party, we don't want people who want nationalisation and more benefits.'
She later added: 'If offering a very, very clear kind of conservatism is now sending out the people from our party who don't believe in our values in the long run, that's a good thing.
'There is no point in us just accumulating lots of people who don't believe in conservatism just so we can win, then when we get into government, we can't govern.
'That's what we saw happen before, that's what we're seeing with Labour, they don't have a plan.
'They just had a plan to win elections and now they're going round and round in circles.
'We want to have people who believe in our agenda, not just people who want to be politicians.'
The Tory leader also hit out at former Tory MSP Jamie Greene – who defected to the Lib Dems earlier this year, attacking his support for the Scottish Government's controversial – and ultimately blocked – gender reforms.
'How anyone could have supported what was obviously a mad piece of legislation and think themselves a Conservative is beyond me,' she said.
Former party leader Jackson Carlaw and current health spokesman Dr Sandesh Gulhane both also backed the Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill.
Speaking as she made her first appearance at the Scottish Tory conference since taking over as leader, Ms Badenoch declared Nigel Farage a 'threat to the union'.
'If he wants the SNP to have another five years, then that is a threat to the union,' she said.
She pointed to an interview Mr Farage gave to the Times earlier this year where he suggested his party could side with the SNP ahead of Labour, but he added that Scotland was 'not going to leave the United Kingdom, it's not going to happen in a month of Sundays'.
In her speech, the Tory leader said: 'In April this year, Nigel Farage said he would be fine with the SNP winning another five years in power.
'He's fine with another five years of higher bills, longer waiting lists, declining school standards, gender madness, and ultimately, independence.'
Addressing members of the party, she said 'Scottish people deserve better' than another five years of the SNP – the party currently leading in the polls ahead of next year's election – while also announcing her party would scrap the windfall tax on oil and gas if it wins back power at the next UK-wide vote.
While the SNP may be in the lead, some polls suggest Reform could beat Labour to second place and push the Tories to fourth.
'In April this year, Nigel Farage said he would be fine with the SNP winning another five years in power,' she said in her speech.
'He's fine with another five years of higher bills, longer waiting lists, declining school standards, gender madness, and ultimately, independence.'
Addressing her first Scottish conference since taking on the top job, Ms Badenoch claimed: 'Reform will vote to let the SNP in, Conservatives will only ever vote to get the nationalists out.'
Part of her 'positive vision of the future' includes 'standing up' for the North Sea oil and gas industry, with Mrs Badenoch claiming that by increasing the energy profits levy – also known as the windfall tax – the Tories had introduced, Labour is 'killing the oil and gas industry'.
Speaking about the levy, she said: 'Frankly if it is allowed to remain in place until 2030, as is Labour's current plan, there will be no industry left to tax.
'Thousands will have been made unemployed and all the while we import more gas from overseas – from the very same basin in which we are banned from drilling.'
She called on the UK Government to remove the energy profits levy, as she added that the Tories would also 'scrap the ban on new licences' for oil and gas developments that has been imposed since Labour came to power.
'We will champion our own industry,' Mrs Badenoch told supporters.
'We will let this great British, great Scottish industry thrive, grow and create jobs – ensuring our energy security for generations to come and making Scotland richer in the process.'

Trainline has sued Labour's Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander over allegations she snubbed them by offering a £32million contract elsewhere. State-owned London North Eastern Railway (LNER), which has been run by the Department for Transport (DfT) since 2018, was said to have recently extended a ticketing sales platform contract. But the company did not offer rivals like Trainline the chance to bid for the 10-year-deal, it is claimed. Trainline has alleged the failure to seek alternative bids means due process was ignored - as were the best interests of passengers and the taxpayer. LNER reportedly awarded the contract for the central booking engine that supports its digital ticket sales to Australia's Vix Technology. Trainline also alleges the publication of the award on the Government's website on December 23 was too opaque as it buried the news during Christmas week, limiting the ability of other parties to respond. It comes as Trainline, who would have expected to compete for the work, has its own rival division which provides a similar 'white label' service to train operators. The company is understood to be claiming that a direct award of the contract was not permissible under procurement law because the terms were varied in scope, duration and beneficiaries. Given the terms of the award, the ticketing platform used by LNER, which operates between London Kings Cross and Scotland via Leeds and Newcastle, could be extended across the rail network. However, both LNER and the DfT have denied a new contract exists saying the allegations are 'categorically untrue'. Rail Unions have previously raised concerns about third party ticket operators like Trainline, accusing the company of being engaged in 'relentless profiteering'. Despite the government's plans for simplification through the nationalisation of its railway, it has maintained there would still be a need for 'an innovative and competitive third-party retail market'. Labour also ruled out establishing a national website and app to promote to promote cheaper fares in competition with the firm. But in guidance from January it said a plan to bring together ticket websites of individual operators was now in the pipeline. An LNER spokesman said of Trainline's allegations: 'This is unequivocally untrue. No such contract exists. Trainline is aware this is the case as we explicitly advised them as much earlier this month.' A DfT spokesman added: 'This is completely and categorically untrue – not least because no such contract exists, which Trainline is well aware after being explicitly told as much by LNER earlier this month. 'The Department has been clear we are working industry to simplify ticketing for customers, as part of the biggest overhaul of our railways in a generation.' Trainline has suggested it is challenging the lack of opportunity for alternative providers to bid, regardless of whether a contract has been entered into at this point in time. The company has filed a claim at the Technology and Construction Court.

On a cloudy Tuesday in September last year, Gawain Towler, a veteran press chief for Nigel Farage's various political parties, was working in Reform UK's central London offices when his phone went calling him into a meeting. Before he was Reform's chairman, Yusuf was the co-founder and chief executive of a luxury concierge business offering travel bookings and once-in-a-lifetime experiences to a wealthy business, Velocity Black, was sold for a reported $300m (£221m) to a US bank in 2023, giving Yusuf the riches which allowed him to donate a six-figure sum to Reform and work as party chairman on an unpaid former employees of Velocity Black speaking to the BBC have said some of the issues - his controlling, sometimes domineering behaviour, a lack of empathy and harsh sackings of staff - had direct echoes of how he behaved running the concierge abrupt departure - and two days later, return as head of Reform's council spending-scrutinising 'Doge' unit - even had parallels with a break, and swifter-than-expected return, as CEO of Velocity, concerns included his unpredictable behaviour which meant people "lived in fear", a complaint from a female ex-employee alleging inappropriate conduct, and a failure to take others into account, epitomised by unhygienic office conditions caused by Yusuf allowing his dog to defecate on the questioned whether Reform had asked questions about Yusuf's time running Velocity Black and whether his issues with people could have been foreseen."We were all in complete disbelief [that he went into politics]," one ex-employee said. That seemed like a major jump." A third employee who worked closely with him said he pushed people "to the absolute limits"."People were emotionally and psychologically affected but it wasn't always the workload, it was the sheer unpredictability of Zia's behaviour and people lived in fear of him," they would lambast employees in the office and sometimes in front of wealthy members of the business's concierge service at Velocity Black least one employee said they never received a formal written employment contract and many left just months after joining the company."He doesn't interact with people in a 'regular' way and he doesn't understand 'regular' interaction," another pointed to an online review of Velocity as reflective of their own experiences. It states that "at the beginning you truly believe you have joined the next Tesla… It is quite simply the worst company I have ever worked in".One employee said Yusuf was an "excellent salesman" who recruited her on a premise which turned out to be far from the reality."He courted me [for the role]. Took me out to dinners. It was all very exciting."But when she started it wasn't what she thought she had signed up for."It very quickly became apparent the façade, the charismatic salesperson, was no longer there."He just seemed very go go go go go and money was no object. He would get angry if things didn't work out the way he wanted them to work out."As he would as Reform chairman, Yusuf worked punishing hours, seemingly to the point of 2017, Velocity's board agreed that he could go on a break and employees weren't sure if he would return. In the end, he returned a few days former employee disliked Yusuf's approach to business so intently he said he didn't exercise his stock options and had no regrets about doing so, despite missing out on a potentially six-figure profit."It left such a bad taste," they said. "The moral culture, [Zia's] lack of empathy."It showed bad people can win."While several former employees were highly critical of Yusuf, others were more positive about their experience of working with him or some of his described him as a "brilliant boss" from whom they had learnt a lot. Another said he was an "absolute powerhouse" who was always respectful. Several employees who criticised his conduct acknowledged he was a powerful and persuasive speaker who was adept at securing multiple rounds of investment in the his hard taskmaster approach, "likeability was important to him", one former employee was a small company where employees told us they were reluctant to raise formal complaints because they feared they would invariably make their way back to the chief 2018, a female employee told colleagues she received a series of late night phone calls from Yusuf which she did not answer. She told them they had made her uncomfortable and she raised them with Yusuf's co-founder, Macdonald, the next day, asking if she could work from home because of the "Zia issue".Macdonald said his co-founder had explained that the phone calls were in error and he had been trying to call someone else. Yusuf said he does not recall this, and that the company ran a 24/7 customer service operation so it was not unusual for employees to be called at June 2019, several months after her departure, the same woman wrote to Macdonald to complain that Yusuf was repeatedly trying to follow her personal Instagram account, despite her rejecting the request each time. He lived in a five-bedroom double-height loft apartment owned by Sir Winston Churchill's cost $8,000 a month, paid for by Velocity Black with the board's on its grandeur, one former staffer recalled how "this place had columns". Yusuf said it was also used as an office by Velocity employees said they thought the spending was excessive and a bad look for a cash-strapped start-up trying to build a viable company spent lavishly on celebrity-studded parties designed to build the brand. In 2017, it flew several supermodels for a party at a private villa in Mykonos, with other events including a Halloween party at the Mandrake Hotel in London and pool parties in Coachella, California in one senior source said Yusuf disliked the events and found them very stressful, others thought that being in the same room as stars was important to him."He was very enamoured by celebrity, very enamoured by being seen, being the guy, being viewed as cool," one ex-employee liked to dress in designer clothing and owned a number of sports cars including a Porsche and a Ferrari. For months, these were kept in a car park at Westfield shopping centre in west London, with Yusuf racking up significant fines in the process, staff said; he said he had no recollection of this and denied living a lavish joining the company were struck by how attractive staff members were, to the extent it appeared to them to be a recruitment strategy, something Yusuf denied."Everyone looked like a model but that made sense as a high-end concierge company. Yusuf used some of the money he made from the deal as a springboard into politics, donating to Reform the following days after his resignation as chairman last week, he returned to Reform in a new role. He now focuses on leading its 'Doge' taskforce - which is modelled on US President Donald Trump's Department of Government Efficiency, working on policy and making media appearances.A new chairman, David Bull, has been appointed in his a press conference marking the change, Yusuf was self-depreciating."What we need now in a chairman is someone who's an incredible communicator, someone who is loved universally across the party. Loved by the volunteers. Someone who is going to do a better job than me in energising the volunteers on the frontline, he's going to have more time to do it," he he added: "I think you'll probably agree he's a more affable and charming man than I am."He said tweets he had sent criticising the party's only female MP as "stupid" for raising the issue of whether Britain should ban the burka had been misjudged and that he had been "exhausted"."There was general relief in the professional and voluntary party when he resigned. Alison Johnstone will quit politics next year when she stands down as Scotland's sixth presiding officer at the Holyrood elections​. The departure of the 59-year-old, who sparked controversy in recent weeks after a series of rows with Douglas Ross, the former leader of the Scottish Conservatives, will raise hopes among her critics that her successor will drive more radical reforms of Holyrood. While Johnstone's tenure has been seen as steady, many at Holyrood believe the parliament would benefit from Westminster-style reforms which would weaken the control of party leaders and whips over committee memberships and encourage independence among backbenchers. 'I came from a wholly non-political background and got involved in a campaign to save a school playing field​.' She said, 'I was not in a political party but campaigned for the creation of a Scottish parliament​ and I then worked as an assistant for Robin Harper, the first-ever Green parliamentarian in the UK elected to the first-ever Scottish parliament.​' Johnstone is the second female and the first Green party member to hold the presiding officer position, which comes with a £126,452 salary. More recently she was involved in a series of rows with Ross who accused her of failing to 'act in a neutral manner ' after she suspended him from the Holyrood chamber. Johnstone was elected as a Green MSP in 2011, and before that was as an Edinburgh Green councillor for Morningside in 2007. ​S​he is a qualified athletics coach and former board member of Scottish Athletics​, previously​ holding the East of Scotland​ records in the 800 metre and 1,500-metre events. A quarter of the present crop of 129 MSPs have announced their departures including a handful of MSPs who have been in Holyrood since its creation in 1999. This week Sarah Boyack, the veteran MSP, announced she was leaving next year, leaving Jackie Baillie as the only Labour MSP with ministerial experience on Holyrood's benches. Baillie is also the only Labour MSP who was elected in 1999 who has been in the Scottish parliament continuously since the outset and will stand again next year.
