Chennai corporation launches dedicated AC lounge for gig workers in Anna Nagar
CHENNAI: In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) opened the first of its dedicated lounges for gig workers at Anna Nagar on Wednesday. The facility was inaugurated by Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin from the Ripon Buildings, alongside several other civic projects. GCC commissioner J Kumaragurubaran stated that similar, but larger, lounges are also being planned in Thiruvanmiyur and Villivakkam for construction workers, and another one for gig workers will be opened soon at GN Chetty road in T Nagar.
The Scandinavian-style AC lounge for gig workers at Anna Nagar 3rd avenue will operate 24/7, providing amenities including seating, mobile charging points, drinking water, and toilet facilities.
Taking to X, Chief Minister M K Stalin said, 'The lounge along with the parking facility launched in Anna Nagar is a place where a large number of women work.'
Kumaragurubaran stated that the initiative was in response to a request from the Gig Workers Welfare Association. The corporation plans to rope in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds to support the expansion of the project.
Balaji K (53), a food delivery person from Poonamallee, said, 'I start my day at 5:30am and travel across the city delivering food until night. I can't return home for a short break due to the distance, often taking shelter in parks, bus stops, or roadside. This lounge offers us a clean, safe place.'
M Ganesan (50), a bike taxi rider, said,'We constantly use our phones for navigation and battery drain is a major issue. Previously, I had to return home just to charge my phone. Now I can do that here and also take a short break.' Delivery executives said that such facilities can be installed in other parts of the city too.

CREDAI Hyderabad elects New Managing Committee members for 2025-27
Hyderabad, June 20 (UNI) The Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association of India (CREDAI) Hyderabad on Friday announced the appointment of a new managing committee for the period 2025 to 2027, which will be responsible for spearheading and strengthening the CREDAI initiatives in Hyderabad and supporting the development of the sector in the region. N. Jaideep Reddy is the President, B. Jagannath Rao is the President-Elect, and Manoj Kumar Agarwal, Kurra Srinath, K. Anil Reddy and Y. Ravi Prasad are Vice Presidents. Kranti Kiran Reddy K is the General Secretary in the new team. Nitish Reddy Gudoor is the Treasurer and Sanjay Kumar Bansal and Sriram Musunuru are Joint Secretaries. The Executive Committee members are -- Addula Gopal Reddy, Alugubelli Venkat Reddy, B Jaipal Reddy, B Vinod Reddy, C Amarendher Reddy, Kavya Kavuri (the first woman elected as an EC member), N Venugopal, and Susheel Kumar Jain, who will all work together for the betterment of the Hyderabad real estate sector. Hyderabad traffic police to use cameras on high-rises for ‘eagle view' monitoring
The Hyderabad police are installing cameras on multi-storey buildings across the city to get an 'Eagle View' of traffic movement and congestion points. The initiative, supported by building owners, aims to help traffic officials detect problems in real time, alert ground staff, and suggest immediate solutions. This was announced during a traffic review meeting held on Friday by C.V. Anand, Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad. Mr. Anand said that the average speed of vehicles in Hyderabad has increased from 17–18 kilometres per hour last year to 24–25 kilometres per hour now, thanks to the efforts of the traffic police. 'Around 1,600 new vehicles are being added to Hyderabad roads every day. Across the three Commissionerates, approximately 91 lakh vehicles are on the road daily,' said the Commissioner. Meanwhile, Mr. Anand said 'Operation Rope' has shown good results and will be strengthened further through a more scientific approach. On VIP movement, he said traffic is now being managed in a more planned manner. Instructions from the Chief Minister to avoid long traffic halts during his travel are being followed strictly, he added. 'About 80% of the traffic signals in Hyderabad now run on auto mode, helping improve the flow of vehicles. For traffic violations, the department is focusing more on the quality of penalties rather than the number of fines, which has led to a decrease in the overall fines being issued,' said the officer. He further added that drone cameras are already in use for monitoring traffic, and Google is providing technical assistance in addition to Google Maps to improve the traffic system. Traffic marshals To address staff shortage, the traffic department is introducing the 'Traffic Marshal' system, where corporate companies can appoint marshals under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). These marshals will be trained by the police and used for traffic control duties. Transgender individuals working as traffic assistants are delivering good results, Mr. Anand said, adding that a report has been submitted to the government. 'More appointments will be made in the traffic department and the government is also preparing to fill vacancies in other departments,' assured the Commissioner. Mr. Anand said preparations for the monsoon season are in progress, with coordination between the police, GHMC and HYDRA. He also mentioned that the disturbance caused by private travel buses is high, and a meeting will be held soon with their managements to take appropriate action. The meeting was attended by all the ACPs, Additional DCPs, Inspectors and SIs from traffic stations, along with Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) D. Joel Davis, DCP Traffic-I B.K. Rahul Hegde, DCP Traffic-II Ashok Kumar and DCP Traffic-III R. Venkateswarlu.
