KUALA LUMPUR: A tahfiz student who pleaded guilty to committing physical sexual assault on a child of a staff member of a tahfiz centre in Hulu Langat in April last year was bound over on a two-year good behaviour bond by the Ampang Magistrate's Court here today.
Magistrate Normaizan Rahim made the order and also imposed a bail of RM3,000 after examining the boy's probation report, which was submitted by the Social Welfare Department (JKM), at the proceeding, held in camera, today.
The court had set today for the sentencing.
Apart from that, Magistrate Normaizan also ordered the boy, who is now 18 years old, to undergo an interactive workshop organised by JKM and imposed a condition for him to be accompanied by his parents during the workshop.
The boy, who was then 17 years old, was charged with committing sexual physical assault on the victim, who was 13 years and eight months old, in April last year.
The charge was framed under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which provides a prison sentence of not more than 20 years and whipping upon conviction.
Lawyer A. Rahman Mohd Nasir represented the teenager, while the prosecution was represented by Deputy Public Prosecutor Norhidayah Abdullah Sani.

On Thursday, Bernama reported that police detained a married couple at a house in Arau early yesterday morning on suspicion of abusing their 11-year-old biological daughter since 2023. The couple has been remanded for six days starting yesterday for further investigation. Arau district police chief Supt Ahmad Mohsin Md Rodi was quoted as saying that the 37-year-old couple was arrested at 1.30 am after Perlis JKM received a complaint from a member of the public. The self-employed accused admitted to communicating sexually with his daughter at a house in Batu Pahat at 4pm on June 16. He was charged under Section 11(1)(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, read together with Section 16, which carries a prison term of up to five years and caning. The victim contacted her aunt following concerns that her father had attempted to initiate inappropriate relations. The victim resisted and fled her father's bedroom before being collected by her aunt. At the same court, a 35-year-old lorry driver pleaded not guilty to physically abusing his niece. He is charged under Section 14(a) of the same act, which carries up to 20 years' imprisonment and caning, if convicted. His bail was set at RM10,000 with additional conditions requiring monthly reporting to the police and no contact with prosecution witnesses. The case has been adjourned to July 23 for submission of legal documents and representation arrangements.
