‘Bringer of joy' and choreographer Matthew Bourne earns City of London freedom
The recognition was for his achievements in contemporary dance, during a career spanning more than four decades, which has seen him enliven productions of Swan Lake, Edward Scissorhands and Nutcracker.
At the ceremony at the Guildhall on Thursday, Sir Matthew, 65, said: 'As a born Londoner, I am particularly thrilled to be receiving the freedom today.
'As the proud son of two children of the Blitz, who lived just streets away from each other in Walthamstow E17, I have made London my home for my entire life.
'It has been my playground, my workplace and the inspiration for many of the works that I have made throughout my career, including Cinderella, Oliver!, Mary Poppins, and even Swan Lake.
'I am deeply honoured and grateful, and would like to thank Mark Lucraft and Fiona Adler for kindly nominating me for the freedom.'
Recorder of London Mark Lucraft KC, and honorary secondary of London Fiona Adler, from the Old Bailey, nominated Sir Matthew.
Sir Matthew has been an artistic director of Adventures in Motion Pictures, and dance company New Adventures, which he founded in 2002 and which specialises in contemporary dance.
His productions include The Car Man, a reinterpretation of composer Georges Bizet's 1875 opera Carmen, Romeo And Juliet, Cinderella, Play Without Words, and The Red Shoes.
For about three decades he has worked with theatre producer Sir Cameron Mackintosh, and Sir Matthew has brought his flair to musicals such as Mary Poppins, My Fair Lady and Oliver!
Deputy policy chairman of the City of London Corporation, James Thomson, said: 'As well as a major exporter of British dance to the rest of the world, Matthew is also the bringer of much joy, with the ability to leave people walking on air as they file out of the theatre.
'He is at the top of his game and is a very worthy recipient of the Freedom of the City of London, and I offer Matthew my warmest congratulations today, which will be echoed by his many millions of admirers.'
Sir Matthew was named the individual with the most Olivier Awards in 2020, when he received a ninth win.
He also has two Tony Awards, for directing and choreographing Swan Lake, and received a special Olivier Award in 2019.
Mr Lucraft said: 'Matthew's consummate skill for reimagining storytelling through dance is evident, not just by how audiences are mesmerised, exhilarated and moved by his productions, featuring troupes of supremely gifted dancers, but also by his hugely impressive collection of national and international awards.'
In 2001 Sir Matthew was made an OBE, and in 2016 was knighted in Queen Elizabeth II's New Year Honours, for services to dance.
The tradition of the freedom of the city is believed to date back to 1237.
Recent recipients include comedian Sir Lenny Henry, theatre owner and producer Sir Cameron, and Lady Mary Peters, who won an Olympic gold medal in the athletics pentathlon in 1972.

Social media has transformed how audiences discover and engage with films. Once overlooked releases can now become viral hits overnight, thanks to the power of platforms like TikTok. The buzz around films used to come from trailers and critical reviews, now with social media, a well-timed edit or meme can launch a film back into the spotlight. For example, Disney's Mufasa: The Lion King had a slow start at the box office last year, but soared to a $722.6 million gross global after multiple TikTok memes gave it a second wind, Manchester Evening News reports. One film that demonstrates this better than any other is Emerald Fennell's Saltburn - and it's now coming to BBC iPlayer to stream for free this weekend. Released in November 2023, Saltburn follows the story of Barry Keoghan's character Oliver Quick, an awkward student at Oxford University who becomes obsessed with the much more popular and rich Felix Catton, portrayed by Jacob Elordi. Felix take's Oliver under his wing, initially feeling sorry for the seemingly shy lower class student. Eventually the pair hit it off, and Felix invites Oliver to spend the summer at his massive family estate, forgetting to tell him about his eccentric family whose way of life is far from normal, and completely intoxicating. Oliver quickly becomes obsessed with the world of wealth, eccentricity and hedonism, and things take a turn for the worse. The film shifts from a seemingly budding friendship, into a thriller full of twists and turns. There's a stacked cast including Oscar winning actress Rosemund Pike, Richard E Grant, known for his iconic turn in Withnail and I, Conversations With Friends' actress Alison Oliver, Gran Turismo's Archie Madekwe and Carey Mulligan. However, when the film premiered in cinemas it did not do as well as producers hoped. Saltburn grossed just $21.1 million in spite of its strong cast and gripping plot. After its release the film's critical consensus read: "Emerald Fennell's candy-coated and incisive Saltburn is a debauched jolt to the senses that will be invigorating for most." Saltburn's reputation then changed almost instantly when it was released on Amazon Prime Video, just weeks after it left cinemas. The film went on to become one of Prime's most-streamed films, receiving a 71 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. It also dominated social media for months, as viewers recreated scenes, provided theories and begged for a sequel. One review on Rotten Tomatoes reads: "Such an amazing performance from the entire cast, great cinematography and interesting storyline. This movie is entertaining and always makes me think." Another states: "Brilliantly artistic and woefully disturbing," as a third went on to say: "Interesting story with good character development. Keeps the viewers interested and curious throughout the film." A fourth fan claimed they'd think about this film forever, writing: "Still processing. Gonna think about it all the time. Very interesting movie and the cinematography is great."

Coronation Street fan-favourite to stay on show as star signs new contract
Another Coronation Street favourite's future on the cobbles has been confirmed, with the star having signed a new contract to stay in the cast. Glenda Shuttleworth (Jodie Prenger) has quickly become a fan-favourite with her outgoing nature behind the Rovers bar, with her penchant for karaoke bringing joy to viewers. The pair never spoke to each other again after their backstage bust-up when they played the Ugly Sisters in the Cinderella pantomime in Brighton in January 2008, in which Kim pushed Aggie to the floor. The 69-year-old TV personality - who co-presented Channel 4's How Clean Is Your House? with the Queen of Clean from 2003 until 2009 - regrets not burying the hatchet before Kim died on Monday (16.06.25) after a short illness at the age of 83. In an interview with the Daily Mirror newspaper, Aggie said: "I have no memory of the last time I spoke to Kim. "It was years and years ago. I did used to dream about Kim but I never actually saw her in real life again. "The dreams were mostly about us making up and being friendly again." Aggie remembered: "We did our scene but when we came out at the other side, Kim was furious. She pushed me. She actually pushed me so hard that I fell over. I lost it then. I really, really lost it with her. "She went off to her dressing room and she was crying her eyes out. "The lead dancer was being made up to take her part because she was refusing to go back on stage, and this was an audience of hundreds of people. "The interval had to be extended. But at the last minute, Kim stormed out of her dressing room and shouted, 'I'm going back out there!' "It was so obvious that she had been crying." Aggie paid tribute to Kim on Tuesday (17.06.25) and said praised her "incredible strength". She told The Sun: "Kim was a tormented soul, but now she's finally at peace. She was an unforgettable woman."
