4 killed, 3 hurt in truck-car collision on Lko-Bahraich highway

Three members of a Gonda-based family and their car driver died after a head-on collision with a truck on the Lucknow-Bahraich highway early Monday morning. The accident occurred around 5:30 am near Rampur police station limits in Barabanki district, severely disrupting traffic on the route, police said.
Barabanki additional superintendent of police (ASP) Vikas Chandra Tripathi said the deceased were identified as Sudhir Maurya, 35, a property dealer; his wife Shanti Maurya, who ran a cosmetics shop in Gonda; her brother-in-law Rama Shankar Kushwaha, 38; and the car driver Ayan Qureshi, 23.
Three other family members sustained critical injuries in the accident. The injured, Sudhir's sister Pooja Kushwaha, 36, and her children Aaksh, 9, and Aanvi, 5, were rushed to the trauma centre of King George Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow, where they are undergoing treatment.
Radhey Shyam Maurya, a relative of the victims, said the family was returning to Gonda from Kanpur after attending the engagement ceremony of Shanti's younger brother. 'They had just reached the Barabanki stretch of the highway when the car collided head-on with a truck coming from Bahraich. The road has no divider, which often leads to such fatal mishaps,' he said.
Police officials confirmed that the impact of the collision was severe, leading to the death of four occupants on the spot. The bodies have been sent for postmortem examination.
The accident led to a traffic jam on the highway, with vehicles stranded on both sides. Local police said it took more than two hours to remove the damaged vehicles and restore the traffic flow.

DEHRADUN: Thirty-two Nepali nationals, including three minors, were rescued on Thursday from a house in Udham Singh Nagar (US Nagar) district, where they were allegedly held captive for around four months after being lured to India with promises of lucrative jobs. The joint operation was conducted by the Nepal embassy, Uttarakhand Police, and NGO, KIN India. Three men, including a Nepali citizen, Birendra Shahi, 21, have been arrested. In a post on X, the official handle of the Nepal embassy in India on Saturday said the rescued individuals will be repatriated after the legal process is completed. Efforts on to rescue 35 more Nepal nationals from Rudrapur US Nagar SSP Manikant Mishra told TOI on Sunday that police were alerted by an embassy official on Thursday. "Acting on the input, police along with the NGO representatives raided the house of Maharaj Singh in Kashipur, where 32 people, including three boys aged around 14-15, were found," Mishra said. He said that the victims were from poor families in Nepal and had been brought to India by Shahi on the promise of jobs. "He had taken Rs 10,000 to 30,000 from each of them. But once in Kashipur, he and his associates, Sachin Kumar, 28, of Ghazipur, and Manish Tiwari, 29, of Rudrapur, confined and assaulted them. They were forced to sell daily-use products for a Delhi-based firm, to which the collected money was transferred. " A case was registered against the trio on Thursday under multiple BNS sections, including 127(4) (wrongful confinement), 137(2) (kidnapping), and 111(2) (organised crime). All three were arrested on Friday and sent to jail after being produced in court. Naveen Joshi, a representative of KIN India, added that a second operation was underway on Sunday to rescue around 35 more Nepali nationals held in Rudrapur.

Two more people, a property dealer and a security guard, were arrested on Saturday in connection with the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case. According to the details, the property dealer was arrested for concealing a jewellery box belonging to Sonam Raghuvanshi, Raja's wife and the prime accused in the case. The box was hidden in a flat in Indore after the murder last month, it was known. Commenting on the arrests, East Khasi Hills district SP Vivek Syiem said, 'The Meghalaya Police Special Investigation Team (SIT) arrested one Silome James from Bhonrasa toll-gate in Dewas district of Madhya Pradesh while he was trying to flee to Bhopal around 7.30 pm on Saturday." 'He is a property dealer and lessee of a building at Heera Bagh Colony in Indore, where Sonam had stayed and kept the jewellery and other items she took with her after the incident," he said. Later, the SIT nabbed a security guard, identified as Balla Ahirwar, from his native village in Ashok Nagar district of Madhya Pradesh around 2 am on Sunday. He was posted at the property. The box is believed to have contained key evidence linked to the murder, PTI quoted sources as saying. The arrested property dealer led the SIT to the place where he had disposed of all the items of the box by burning, the officer said. A member of the SIT said that Sonam's boyfriend, Raj Kushwaha, owned a firearm, and this was kept at the property along with jewellery and a laptop. At the site where James had burnt the box, there were no signs of the pistol, laptop or any of the jewellery belonging to Raja, he said, adding that a forensic team had also visited the spot and collected all available evidence. The flat was rented out to murder co-accused Vishal Chauhan by James, who runs a property management firm in Indore, they said. On June 13, James told reporters that Chauhan approached him on May 30 and rented the flat for Rs 17,000 per month, signing a formal agreement. However, when the Meghalaya Police later searched the flat, it was found vacant, as per the sources. Sonam stayed in the flat for several days on return from Meghalaya, before eventually surrendering to police in UP on June 8, the sources said. James and Ahirwar were produced before a court in Indore, which remanded them in the transit custody of Meghalaya Police for seven days, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Rajesh Dandotiya said. Indore-based transport businessman Raghuvanshi married Sonam on May 11 in Indore, and the couple left for their honeymoon in Meghalaya on May 20. The couple went missing on May 23, and Raja Raghuvanshi's mutilated body was recovered on June 2 from a deep gorge near a waterfall in the Sohra area of East Khasi Hills district. Raja was hacked to death by three men using two machetes near a secluded parking lot close to the famous Weisawdong falls in Sohra, it was later revealed. Sonam, accused of conspiring with her alleged lover to kill her husband, surrendered on June 8 before the police in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur district, while four other accused have been arrested from different locations in MP and UP. The Meghalaya Police had earlier arrested five persons in connection with the murder — Sonam, her alleged lover Raj Kushwaha and the latter's three friends Vishal Chauhan, Akash Rajput and Anand Kurmi. Punjab: 60 firms under lens for ₹950-crore GST scam, police investigation on

The Mandi Gobindgarh police in Fatehgarh Sahib have been investigating a multi-crore GST scam, allegedly involving over 60 fictitious companies. The FIR was registered recently on the complaint of a Ludhiana-based businessman, who said that he has now submitted more proof of 'fake' transactions and copies of 70 cheques in the ' ₹ 950-crore scam'. In his complaint to the DGP, Bureau of Investigation and senior Fatehgarh Sahib police authorities, Kashmir Giri of Khanna has sought a thorough and impartial investigation. The Mandi Gobindgarh police had registered an FIR on June 11. Claiming that more than 60 firms were involved in the scam, he alleged collusion between private individuals and government officials. After the registration of the FIR on June 11, the police had formed a special investigation team (SIT). According to Giri, the FIR concerns forged sale and lease deeds executed using the names of his sons through fake firms. He alleged that the key conspirators created shell companies using fake IDs, dummy directors and even forged rent agreements and lease deeds — all without his family's knowledge. He said officials must inquire the origin of the funds used to buy high-value stamp papers and also the role of sub-registrars and others who facilitated such transactions. 'A sale deed dated August 11, 2022, shows a transaction worth over ₹ 1.97 crore and claimed to have been paid through cheques. But such cheques were never issued or encashed. The beneficiary firm is non-functional. A CGST inspection report dated September 30, 2024, verified this, but no further action was taken by authorities,' he mentioned. He further alleged that officials from several private banks helped open accounts for such bogus firms without proper verification. The complaint referenced a high court order dated April 23, directing the Punjab DGP to act on Giri's earlier representation. Besides seeking a thorough probe, he has sought safety of his family. The Mandi Gobindgarh police has slapped Sections 419, 420, 467, 468, 471 and 120-B of the IPC. One of the SIT members, seeking anonymity, said an investigation was being conducted. 'Huge suspicious transactions were found during the investigation,' he added.
