Al Salam Bank Net Profit increases by 32.7% in Q1 2025

Al Salam Bank (Bahrain Bourse trading code 'SALAM', Dubai Financial Market trading code 'SALAM_BAH') today announced record net profit attributable to shareholders of US$ 49.3 million for the first quarter of 2025 (Q1 2025), marking a 32.7% increase from US$ 37.2 million reported in Q1 2024. The growth in profitability was primarily driven by the strong performance of the Group's core banking operations, subsidiaries, and associates. Earnings per share (EPS) increased to US cents 16.2 for Q1 2025, compared to US cents 13.0 for the same period last year. Correspondingly, the Bank's Return on Equity (ROE) has increased to a record 17.2% in Q1 2025, up from 15.9% in Q1 2024, underscoring enhanced sustainable profitability and prudent capital management.
The Bank's gross income for Q1 2025 increased by 36.0% to US$ 280.2 million, compared to US$ 206.0 million in Q1 2024. The Group's consolidated cost to income ratio improved significantly, decreasing to 46.5% in Q1 2025 from 47.8% in Q1 2024, supported by an efficient operating model, group-wide optimization initiatives, and scalable growth. Moreover, total comprehensive income attributable to the owners of the Bank for Q1 2025 increased to US$ 71.7 million, up from US$ 69.5 million in Q1 2024.
The Bank's balance sheet continued its growth trajectory, reaching a new record with total assets increasing by 4.5% to US$ 19.58 billion in Q1 2025, compared to US$ 18.73 billion in 2024. Financing assets increased by 4.9% to US$ 10.19 billion, while customer deposits increased to US$ 13.77 billion, up 4.8% from US$ 13.14 billion at the end of 2024. Total equity attributable to the Bank's shareholders increased by 8.3% to US$ 1.04 billion in Q1 2025 from US$ 956.2 million in 2024. Accordingly, the Bank's capital adequacy ratio was maintained at 24.8%, reflecting a strong capital position conducive for sustainable growth.
Commenting on the results, His Excellency Shaikh Khalid bin Mustahail Al Mashani, Chairman of Al Salam Bank, said: 'We are proud to deliver a strong first-quarter performance in 2025, underscored by robust earnings growth, enhanced capitalization, and continued balance sheet expansion. Despite the unpredictable nature of the global geopolitical and economic landscape that has characterised the start of 2025, the GCC remains resilient and well positioned for long-term growth.'

Bahrain Bourse (BHB), a licensed exchange by the Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB), announced its successful participation alongside the participation of the Central Bank of Bahrain in the HSBC GCC Exchanges London Conference 2025, held on 16th June in London. The event was attended by a high-level delegation from Bahrain, which included H.E. Khalid Humaidan, Governor of the Central Bank of Bahrain, Mr. Yusef Abdullah Al Yusef, Chairman of Bahrain Bourse, Shaikh Khalifa bin Ebrahim Al-Khalifa, Chief Executive Officer of Bahrain Bourse, as well as representatives from the Central Bank of Bahrain, the Ministry of Finance and National Economy (MOFNE), and Bahrain Bourse. Bahrain Bourse leveraged the conference platform to attract international investment and strengthen its relationships with global fund and asset managers. Organized by HSBC, the event brought together senior leaders from all seven GCC stock exchanges and a global network of investors to promote capital market development and showcase the region's investment opportunities. As part of the conference agenda, H.E. NBB Participates in Tree Planting Drive in Zallaq and Zayed Town

In commemoration of World Environment Day, the National Bank of Bahrain (NBB) participated in a large-scale tree planting drive on 17th May 2025 across the Kingdom's Zallaq and Zayed Town localities. The activity was conducted under the 'Forever Green' campaign launched by the National Initiative for Agricultural Development (NIAD) in cooperation with the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning, and the Supreme Council for Environment (SCE). The project aims to support national ambitions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate change impact while enhancing Bahrain's aesthetic appeal and honouring its agricultural legacy. Marking the fourth phase of the nationwide campaign, the event was organised in collaboration with the NIAD where a total of 206 seedlings were planted over a combined area of 2,518 square metres across Road 55 in Zallaq (745 square metres) and Road 20 in Zayed Town (1,773 square metres). 118 neem seedlings were planted in the Zallaq location, while 76 neem and 12 jatropha seeds were planted along the Zayed Town spot. These seed varieties are well-suited for Bahrain's arid climate and can withstand harsh environmental conditions. The activity was inaugurated with an official ceremony at the Zallaq site in the presence of Her Excellency Shaikha Maram bint Isa Al Khalifa, Secretary-General of NIAD, Usman Ahmed, Group Chief Executive Officer of NBB, and Zaina Alzayani, Group Chief Strategy and Sustainability Officer of NBB. They were joined by other stakeholders from the agricultural and environmental sectors as well as the Bank's employees who voluntarily took part in the exercise in support of a greener Bahrain. On the occasion, Her Excellency Shaikha Maram bint Isa Al Khalifa, Secretary-General of NIAD said, 'This ongoing collaboration with NBB stands as a model for effective public-private partnership in advancing the goals of this national afforestation campaign and promoting environmental sustainability in the Kingdom.' For her part, Zaina Alzayani, Group Chief Strategy and Sustainability Officer at NBB stated, 'Our involvement in this project reflects our long-standing belief that real change starts with deliberate action. We are proud to have made another contribution to the national sustainability objectives by helping increase Bahrain's green cover. Planting over 200 seeds across two important locations of the Kingdom is a meaningful way to translate our environmental pledges into tangible outcomes. It is a reminder that sustainability is built on consistency, accountability, and a shared vision for a healthier planet.' The tree planting drive forms part of NBB's wider Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) efforts aimed at contributing positively to the preservation of Bahrain's natural landscapes. Through active engagement, the Bank continues to serve its role as a responsible corporate citizen working diligently to promote ecological consciousness across the Kingdom.

CBB holds third Board meeting for 2025

The Central Bank of Bahrain's (CBB) Board of Directors held its third meeting for the year 2025, chaired by Mr. Hassan Khalifa Al Jalahma on Sunday, 15 June 2025. The Board reviewed the topics on the agenda and was presented with key developments related to the CBB's priorities by HE Khalid Humaidan. In addition, the Board reviewed the CBB's licensing activities, policies, and other achievements thus far in 2025. The Board also reviewed key monetary and banking indicators for the period up to April 2025 including the money supply, which increased by BD5.2 billion to reach BD 16.8 billion at the end of April 2025, compared to the same period in 2024. As for retail banks, total private deposits increased to around BD 0.5 billion at the end of April 2025, an increase of 3.5% compared to the end of April 2024. The outstanding balance of total loans and credit facilities extended to resident economic sectors increased to BD12.4 billion at the end of April 2025, an increase of 1.8% compared April 2024, with the Business Sector accounting for 43.3% and the Personal Sector at 48.9% of total loans and credit facilities. The balance sheet of the banking system (retail banks and wholesale sector banks) increased to $244.7 billion at the end of April 2025, an increase of 2.3% compared to the end April of 2024. Point of Sales (POS) data for April 2025 totaled 21.5 million transactions (77.6% of which were contactless), an increase of 28.5% compared to the same period in 2024. The total value of POS transactions for April 2025 totaled BD 428.2 million (52.5% of which were contactless), an increase of 17.3% compared to the same period in 2024. The banking sector capital adequacy ratio reached 20.6% in Q1 2025 compared with 22.2% in Q1 2024. The capital adequacy ratio for the various banking sectors was 29.4% for conventional retail banks, 16.6% for conventional wholesale banks, 23.8% for Islamic retail banks, and 21.1% for Islamic wholesale banks in Q1 2025. The total number of registered Collective Investment Undertakings (CIUs) as of March 2025 stood at 1737 CIUs, compared to 1699 CIUs as of March 2024. The net asset value (NAV) of the CIUs decreased from US $11.551 billion in Q1 2024 to US $11.269 billion in Q1 2025, reflecting a decrease of 2.4%. The NAV of Bahrain domiciled CIUs decreased from US $4.586 billion in Q1 2024 to US $4.411 billion in Q1 2025, reflecting a decrease of 3.8%. The NAV of overseas domiciled CIUs decreased from US $6.965 billion in Q1 2024 to US $6.858 billion in Q1 2025, reflecting a decrease of 1.5%. Additionally, the NAV of Shari'a-compliant CIUs increased from US $1.743 billion in Q1 2024 to US $2.004 billion in Q1 2025, reflecting an increase of 15%.
