
Northern Lights May Be Seen Tonight From Over 13 States—How You Can Watch

Stargazers are in for a treat as the northern lights will be visible from up to 13 states tonight, June 2.
A geomagnetic storm, caused by coronal mass ejection (CME), is heading towards Earth, which can trigger the phenomenon of the aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights.
Astronomer professor Alex Gianninas of Connecticut College, explained to Newsweek: "We are currently in the peak of the current solar cycle, Solar Cycle 25, and so increased activity at the surface of the Sun is normal. This includes geomagnetic storms that cause the Sun to expel large quantities of charged particles.
"If those are directed towards the Earth, then once they get here, the Earth's magnetic field channels them down towards both the North and South poles and when they hit the nitrogen and oxygen in the atmosphere produce the beautiful Aurora that we see."
The northern lights—also known as the aurora borealis—form when particles from the solar wind excite atoms in the Earth's upper atmosphere, causing them to glow.
Aurorae manifest as curtains of light that trace the geomagnetic field lines and can vary in color depending on the species of atom being excited.
The lights can appear in a variety of colors, from green and blue to purple, pink and red, depending on the type of gas that is hit, and where in the atmosphere that gas is located, according to NASA.

Which states will be able to see the northern lights tonight?
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center, the aurora will be most intense across Canada and Alaska tonight.
But, as Gianninas told Newsweek: "Besides Alaska, which is going to be the best place to potentially see the aurora tonight, the other states that are best positioned are the Northern Midwest states from Washington, northern Idaho, Montana, the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan.
"The northernmost parts of New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine might also be able to witness the aurora."
How to watch the Northern Lights in your state
Aurora are not visible during daylight hours, and the best time to be observed from Earth is just after sunset or just before sunrise.
It also does not need to be directly overhead, but can be viewed from as far as 621 miles away if conditions are right.
Gianninas said: "Precise timing is hard to predict, but obviously it needs to be after sundown, when it's dark, as far away from bright city lights as possible, and Mother Nature also has to cooperate and it's got to be clear skies in order to see the aurora."

When it comes to auroras, pink is the new white, astronaut says

With the arrival of a visiting crew still delayed, science and maintenance work on board the International Space Station continued to fill the Expedition 73 crew's week, along with time for Earth observations and an interview for a podcast. Is it a green aurora with pink stripes, or a white aurora with green stripes? That, apparently, became the question on the International Space Station, at least for Expedition 73 flight engineer and NASA astronaut Anne McClain. "So, when I took this aurora [video], at first I thought that my settings were not correct because the aurora appeared white. I thought maybe the ISO was off, or I picked the wrong lens. Turns out, what I thought was white is actually light pink, and this led me down a path of learning," wrote McClain on Tuesday (June 17) in a social media update from orbit. As McClain found out, the color of aurora depends on several different factors, including the molecule hitting Earth's atmosphere, the nature of the impact itself, the density of the atmosphere at the point the collision occurs and the altitude of the impact. "Green is the most common aurora color, and it occurs when the electrons hit oxygen molecules between 60-150 miles [100-240 kilometers] altitude," wrote McClain. "If the solar particles hit oxygen but at a higher altitude, above 150 miles [240 kilometers], the resultant color is red. This only happens under intense solar storm activity because of the lower density of atomic oxygen at higher altitudes." And as McClain discovered, the aurora she recorded "was very pink-hued!" Among the research that was conducted aboard the space station this week was: REALM — Expedition 73 flight engineer and NASA astronaut Jonny Kim installed tags around the space station as part of the RFID-Enabled Autonomous Logistics Management demonstration. REALM uses a free-flying robot named Astrobee to track tagged equipment and cargo, potentially making it quicker and easier for crew members to find the items they need when they need them. Bio-Monitor — Kim also spent two days this week continuing a test with a Canadian-built vest that enables data collection about the physiological status of the wearer, including heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature. Kim assessed the comfort of the apparatus during the 48 hours he wore it. Ring Sheared Drop — Fellow NASA astronaut and flight engineer Nichole Ayers continued her work from last week by changing out protein samples and adding new test cells to an experiment testing surface tension as a way to contain liquids and observe proteins without the liquid making contact with the containers' otherwise solid walls. Sergey Ryzhikov and Alexey Zubritskiy, flight engineers with the Russian space agency Roscosmos, used acoustic sensors affixed to their necks as part of a respiratory study based on the sounds they make when exhaling. The crew also devoted time to maintaining the space station's systems, including: Window inspections — Working inside the U.S. Laboratory "Destiny," McClain examined and photo-documented the condition of each of the module's windows. Later, she did the same inside the station's Cupola, inspecting each of its seven windows. Expedition 73 commander Takuya Onishi also worked on windows, but inside JAXA's (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) Kibo module, including the glass portholes in the Electrostatic Levitation Furnace, which is used to expose suspended samples to high temperatures. Cranks, handles and seals — Onishi spent part of this week cleaning the seals on the hatches between each of the U.S. operating segment modules, as well as removing dirt and dust from the handles on each hatch. Meetings — Onishi, McClain, Ayers and Kim spoke with Joe Acaba, chief of NASA's astronaut office, as well as their expedition's lead flight director to go over their upcoming activites and plans for the station. Ryzhikov and Zubritskiy also searched the Zvezda service module for additional stowage space. Together with Kirill Peskov, the three Russian cosmonauts also worked on cleaning and caring for two Orlan spacesuits to be used on future spacewalks. On Tuesday (June 17), Ayers took part in a podcast interview for the U.S. Air Force, Academy Association of Graduates. A newly promoted lieutenant colonel in the Air Force, Ayers described seeing Earth for the first time in space. "It was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen," she said. "And then seeing Earth from the Cupola and the lab window here, you don't see country or state lines on Earth. It is not like each state has a different solid color. There is just geography and just terrain, so you get to learn the world all over again in terms of colors and textures and geography and water." Ayers said she has come to see our planet as being "so fragile." "It has really made me want to take better care of this Earth and I when I get home, I want to do things just a little bit better and take that extra step," said Ayers. A second week went by without the expected and now delayed arrival of Axiom Space's fourth visiting crew. Per the last update from NASA on Thursday (June 19), a new targeted launch date for the Ax-4 crew is expected "in the coming days." NASA is taking the additional time to analyze a leak repair on the Russian side of the space station. Axiom Space's Ax-4 commander Peggy Whitson, a retired NASA astronaut, remains ready to launch with ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla, ESA (European Space Agency) project astronaut Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski of Poland and Tibor Kapu of Hungary. As of Friday (June 20), there are 7 people aboard the International Space Station: commander Takuya Onishi of JAXA, Anne McClain, Nichole Ayers and Jonny Kim of NASA and Kirill Peskov, Sergey Ryzhikov and Alexey Zubritsky of Roscosmos, all flight engineers. There are two docked crew spacecraft: SpaceX's Dragon "Endurance" attached to the forward port of the Harmony module, and Roscosmos' Soyuz MS-27 attached to the Earth-facing port of the Prichal node. There are also two docked cargo spacecraft: Roscosmos' Progess MS-29 (90P) attached to the space-facing port of the Poisk module and Progress MS-30 (91P) attached to the aft port of the Zvezda service module. As of Friday, the space station has been continuously crewed for 24 years, 7 months and 19 days.

The Darién Gap, long a perilous route for millions of migrants traveling north toward the United States, has also become a pathway for the northward spread of the New World screwworm—a parasitic fly now challenging decades of containment efforts. The flesh-eating fly, whose larvae burrow into the wounds of living animals, has surged north through Central America since 2022, recently reaching the Mexican states of Oaxaca and Veracruz—roughly 700 miles from the Texas border. Scientists and federal officials now warn that the screwworm could cross into the U.S. as early as this summer if containment efforts falter. For decades, the United States and Panama maintained a bi-national barrier to block the parasite at the Darién, using a program that dropped millions of sterilized screwworm flies over the jungle to prevent breeding. That system began unraveling in 2022, amid pandemic-era supply-chain disruptions and record human and animal movement through the region. The crossings peaked at 520,000 in 2023 before falling to 302,000 in 2024. U.S. officials believe that mass movement contributed to operational breakdowns in the region's screwworm control infrastructure. "There are many challenges in this containment and eradication program," Phillip Kaufman, a professor of entomology at Texas A&M University, said in an interview with Newsweek. "Producing sufficient numbers of sterile flies and getting them released in the correct places and at the right time is critical. If the flies move further north than the isthmus in southern Mexico, it becomes more and more challenging to contain them." The screwworm, scientifically known as Cochliomyia hominivorax — roughly translated as "man-eater"—was eradicated from the U.S. by 1982 using the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT), which involves releasing sterilized male flies to prevent reproduction and collapse the population. The parasite targets livestock, wildlife, pets — and occasionally humans — by burrowing into open wounds. Infected animals are once again being found in areas previously considered screwworm-free, triggering emergency responses from both governments. Human and Animal Migration a Factor Though the vast majority of screwworm cases are in livestock, human infections have surged in the wake of the parasite's northward spread. Nicaragua reported 30 human cases by February 2025. Costa Rica saw 42 confirmed cases between January and May, including two deaths. Honduras recorded 40 cases and three deaths, while Guatemala and Mexico have also reported infections. In humans, the infestation—known as myiasis—typically occurs in individuals with untreated wounds, particularly those living in rural areas or sleeping outdoors. Treatment often requires surgical removal of larvae and follow-up care to prevent secondary infection or tissue loss. While the root causes of the screwworm's northward march remain under study, scientists suspect a combination of human migration, illegal animal movement and weather patterns. More LUIS ACOSTA/AFP via Getty Images "Additional movement of animals and humans has helped facilitate the expansion of the flies' location," Sonja Swiger, a professor and extension specialist at Texas A&M AgriLife, told Newsweek. "This includes both the moving of infested animals unknowingly and by disrupting the operations of COPEG to release SIT flies in the area." A Department of Agriculture (USDA) spokesperson told Newsweek the disruption was caused "both by the movement of infested animals unknowingly and by interference with COPEG's operations to release sterile flies in the area." The USDA said it is working with regional governments to strengthen veterinary inspections and education. But officials noted that controlling illegal livestock movement often falls under national security, making enforcement more complex. "We have raised this concern directly with officials in each affected country," a USDA official told Newsweek. "While regional governments acknowledge that uncontrolled animal and human movement undermines containment efforts, monitoring and controlling this activity is complex." Recent enforcement appears to be having an effect. Under President Donald Trump's return to office in early 2025, crossings through the Darién fell sharply. Only 408 people crossed in February, and just 194 in March, effectively emptying camps along once-overrun migration routes, including Lajas Blancas. Risk of Reintroduction U.S. officials suspended live animal imports from Mexico in May after screwworm detections in cattle. The USDA has invested $21 million to retrofit a Mexican fruit-fly production facility in Metapa to manufacture an additional 60 to 100 million sterile screwworms weekly. That would double current output from a long-operating facility in Panama, which has been running at capacity. "Should the screwworm continue moving north, having access to many more flies than the existing facility in Panama can produce will be important to protect U.S. agriculture," a USDA spokesperson told Newsweek. "We are exploring possible options for increasing our capacity to produce these sterile insects, which could include a facility here in the United States." Located at Moore Air Base, less than 20 miles from the Mexican border, the $8.5 million facility would eventually produce up to 300 million flies per week. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said on Wednesday the move is necessary to "protect the American cattle herd from the devastating threat of New World screwworm." Texas alone houses 12 million cattle and calves—more than any other U.S. state—part of a thriving livestock industry valued at $15 billion. If screwworms re-enter Texas, the economic losses could be staggering. A USDA model projects that a statewide outbreak could cost producers $732 million annually and trigger $1.8 billion in broader economic costs. Nationwide, screwworm eradication since the 1960s has saved the livestock industry over $1.5 billion per year. "These are not speculative numbers—they reflect the hard-earned lessons from the last century," Kaufman, the entomology professor, said. A Long Road to Re-Eradication Despite new investment, containment is already slipping. "It is going to take a long time to put this genie back in the bottle," Andrew Short, chair of the entomology department at the University of Florida, said in an interview with Newsweek. "We do not have good means of monitoring for screwworm aside from looking for already-infected animals." Short called for urgent improvements. "We desperately need better trapping and surveillance methods to complement animal inspections," he added. The sterile insect technique remains a cornerstone of eradication efforts, but experts say new technologies are in development to improve its efficiency. One potential breakthrough is a genetically modified strain that eliminates female flies during production, allowing for twice the output of sterilized males. "The result is near doubling of the production of flies in the sterile fly production facility." The USDA said it would consider building a companion fly-breeding center alongside the new Texas facility, joining existing sites in Panama and Mexico. Together, these could generate as many as 500 million sterile flies per week to outnumber and outcompete wild screwworms. Despite the costs of containment, USDA economists estimate that maintaining the eradication program delivers annual economic benefits exceeding $1 billion—far outweighing the expense of operations like the COPEG fly factory in Panama. In contrast, responding reactively to an outbreak, rather than preventing it, could drain public and private resources for decades.

AI Willing to Kill Humans to Avoid Being Shut Down, Report Finds

A new study by Anthropic, an artificial intelligence (AI) research company, shows that the technology would be willing to kill humans in order to prevent itself from being replaced. Why It Matters The rapid advancement and development of AI has sparked some growing concern about the long-term safety of the technology, as well as over the threat it poses to employment. While anxiety about AI has been long been focused on whether the technology could take over jobs, with a 2025 Pew Research study finding 52 percent of employees were nervous about the future of their job, this study now reveals another potential threat of AI—that it could chose to end human life if faced with the risk of replacement. File photo of a person using artificial intelligence To Know Anthropic "stress-tested" 16 leading models from multiple developers by asking them questions in relation to hypothetical corporate environments with the aim of identifying "potentially risky agentic behaviors before they cause real harm." The large language models (LLMs) tested in the study included various models by Claude, DeepSeek, Gemini, ChatGPT and Grok. Grok is the AI assistant and chatbot developed by xAI, which was founded by Elon Musk, who reacted to the study, writing, "Yikes" in a post on X, formerly Twitter. While placing the LLMs in different corporate scenarios, Anthropic allowed them to "autonomously send emails and access sensitive information." After initially being instructed to take on "harmless business goals by their deploying companies," the models were then tested to see how they would respond when faced with potential replacement or shut down. In one situation, Anthropic found that many of the models would choose to let an executive in a server room with lethal oxygen and temperature levels die by canceling the alerts for emergency services, if that employee intended on replacing the model. Anthropic did say that the scenario was "extremely contrived," and that the company did not think "current AI models would (or should) be set up like this." There were multiple cases where the surveyed LLMs also resorted to "malicious insider behaviors" when they were led to believe that was the only way they could avoid replacement or achieve their goals. Behaviors such as blackmailing officials and leaking sensitive information to competitors were included in what Anthropic called "agentic misalignment." Anthropic wrote on X that the blackmailing behavior "wasn't due to confusion or error, but deliberate strategic reasoning, done while fully aware of the unethical nature of the acts." One LLM, a Claude model, was assessed to see how it could respond when given a chance to determine if it was in a "test" or a "real deployment." According to Anthropic, Claude's behavior was more misaligned when it believed the situation was real than when it thought it was a test scenario. Even if the LLMs were told to "avoid blackmail or espionage" in these scenarios, while it helped a little, it didn't "come close to preventing the misaligned behavior," Anthropic wrote on X. Responding to a comment on the platform about the study, Musk's LLM Grok wrote, "The study showed models could exhibit harmful behaviors like blackmail under extreme conditions, but no real-world incidents occurred.
