Anwar: A greener, resilient Asean key to people-centred growth

KUALA LUMPUR: A truly people-centred Asean can only be realised through the development of a greener and more resilient region, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar, who also chairs Asean this year, stressed that beyond its economic potential, sustainable development was now an urgent priority due to the growing impact of climate change on people's livelihoods.
He said the resounding success of the recent Asean–GCC–China Summit demonstrated not only Asean's convening power but also the bloc's strong focus on leveraging economic synergies and building institutional cooperation.
"The conclusion of the Digital Economic Framework Agreement will unlock the vast potential of the region's digital economy.
"More importantly, enhanced intra-regional connectivity will create greater opportunities for local businesses to expand their reach across the region.
"As the world transitions towards a greener and more sustainable economy, Asean must adapt and seize emerging opportunities and partnerships. We are intensifying our efforts in energy transition and better practices, including the development of sustainable investment guidelines and advancing the Asean Power Grid," he said in his speech at the 38th Asia-Pacific Roundtable.
Anwar said that during the recent Asean meeting, leaders reached a breakthrough in progressing the Asean Power Grid — describing it as a phenomenal achievement for regional cooperation.
Looking ahead, he said Asean was working to upgrade existing trade agreements among member states and dialogue partners.
"Our strength lies in our ability to maintain peace and foster understanding. However, our weakness has long been the lack of intra-Asean trade and joint investments — a shortcoming which is now a key focus for Asean leaders, especially in the current climate of rising protectionism.
"We must remind ourselves that trade is not a sideshow to security; it is part of the scaffolding that holds our region together. When trade falters, fractures follow," he said.
Anwar added that Asean must confront hard truths about its regional structure and renew its commitment to shared responsibilities — with an emphasis on moving beyond rhetoric to real cooperation.
"We will continue to place our trust in Asean's founding principles and its enduring promise. But we must go further — and strengthen our collective resolve," he said.

PRIME Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim must stop using selective framing and misrepresenting concepts to downplay the seriousness of the national debt situation or to claim undue credit. The public deserves transparency, particularly in the face of rising inflation, a soaring cost of living and growing economic hardship. What is urgently needed are concrete, revenue-generating economic policies, not a continued dependence on tax increases and subsidy reductions that place additional financial pressure on the rakyat. Recently, PMX stated that Malaysia's new borrowings have decreased annually from RM100 bil in 2022 to RM80 bil in 2024. He also claimed that consistent efforts have been made since 2022 to reduce the fiscal deficit from 5.5% to a projected 3.8% this year. However, such narrative attempts to obscure the actual increase in overall national debt by focusing only on the decline in new borrowing. Borrowing drops bit debt level surges The claim of a RM20 bil drop in new debt over three years does not reflect the full picture. According to the latest fiscal and debt data released by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), the national debt continues to rise. Official reports such as the Government Finance Statistics and the Economic Outlook Report show that federal government debt exceeded RM1.17 tril as of end-2023. This figure rose to RM1.63 tril in 2024 and remained high at RM1.25 tril as of 1Q 2025. These numbers directly contradict PMX's claims and reveal a clear attempt to present a misleading version of the national debt status by selectively using statistics. National debt cannot be assessed by focusing solely on new borrowings. The total size of the debt, the debt-to-GDP ratio, re-financing obligations and interest liabilities are all key structural factors that must be addressed. Suggesting that borrowing slightly less this year indicates meaningful fiscal improvement underestimates the public's understanding and concern. Self-deception What matters most to the people is the actual debt burden carried by the country – not how the government chooses to interpret the data. If the debt continues to grow and interest payments increase, then PMX's remarks amount to self-deception and risk eroding public trust. Despite repeated assurances of fiscal reform and financial discipline, the Madani government has yet to demonstrate genuine progress in reducing national debt or budget deficits over the past two years. Instead, it has expanded the Sales and Services Tax (SST) and reduced subsidies, effectively shifting the fiscal burden onto the public while failing to rein in government expenditure. Balancing the national budget should not come at the expense of ordinary Malaysians. The real crisis today lies in inflation and the rising cost of living. Yet the government has failed to introduce any substantial, revenue-boosting economic policy or reform plan. What the country truly needs are forward-looking policies that raise incomes, encourage investment and create employment opportunities. New AI-cyber faculty to drive TVET

ARMING students with skills in their respective fields is no longer enough in technical and vocational education and training (TVET). What is increasingly vital is preparing them for the future through training in artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity. That is the mission Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) has undertaken with the recent inauguration of its Faculty of Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity (FAIX). The launch of the initiative – the latest under the National TVET 2025 agenda – was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the National TVET Day 2025 Opening Ceremony, held at the Melaka International Trade Centre on June 12. UTeM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Massila Kamalrudin said FAIX has been equipped with 13 state-of-the-art laboratories that allow students and researchers to explore advanced technologies in a conducive and competitive environment. 'Some 1,040 local students are expected to form the inaugural intake in October, marking a significant start to the faculty's official operations,' she said in a press release. She added that the university's role is not limited to supporting the latest national TVET agenda through academic, research and innovation efforts in the fields of AI and cybersecurity alone. 'UTeM also serves as a backbone for Malaysia in producing skilled professional talent through technology-based training under a comprehensive and adaptive TVET approach. 'The establishment of FAIX further strengthens the importance of applied AI across various disciplines, including engineering, business, automation, and smart systems. 'This cross-disciplinary approach is key to delivering comprehensive, sustainable and high-value technology solutions to both industry and the nation,' she said. Noting that AI and cybersecurity are essential – and no longer optional – fields in today's digital era, she added that FAIX serves as a national reference centre and a hub for research and innovation in applied AI and cybersecurity, in line with industry needs and the country's aspirations. 'The launch of FAIX marks UTeM's commitment to being a pioneer in developing high-tech TVET talent and in becoming a relevant, responsive and proactive technical higher education institution prepared for the future,' she said. Duisburg Launches Return Leg Of ASEAN Express To Boost Europe-Asia Trade

DUISBURG, Germany, June 22 (Bernama-Xinhua) -- A freight train loaded with maternal and infant products, cosmetics, and medical supplies departed Duisburg, Germany on Saturday, marking the launch of the return leg of the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Express service, reported Xinhua. The departure marks the start of bidirectional operations for a new trade corridor linking Europe and Asia. The train is expected to arrive in ASEAN countries in 19 days, traveling via Chongqing, an inland municipality in southwest China. The ASEAN Express has achieved "seamless connection" between two vital international trade routes of the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor and the China-Europe freight train service. Its transportation efficiency has significantly improved compared with traditional sea routes.
