The YoY decline in net profit attributable to equity holders is mainly due to additional taxes from the application of Domestic Minimum Top-Taxes ('DMTT'), effective 1 January 2025, and acquisition charges associated with the acquisitions completed in 2024. Earnings per share (EPS) are 10.9 fils for the first quarter of 2025, compared to 11.4 fils in Q1 2024.
Total comprehensive income attributable to equity holders in Q1 2025 was reported at BD11.8M (US$31.3M), a 70% decrease from BD39.7M (US$105.3M) in the first quarter of 2024, mainly due to investment fair value changes.

Beyon Chairman Shaikh Abdulla bin Khalifa Al Khalifa announced the financial results for the first quarter of 2025 following a meeting of the Board of Directors on Wednesday 30th April, at Beyon's Campus, Hamala, Kingdom of Bahrain.
'The first quarter of 2025 was marked by continued top-line growth and momentum across Beyon's digital companies as well as our telecom and connectivity businesses. The performance reflected strong performance in digital services, wholesale, mobile, and fixed broadband. We also recorded a 3% increase in EBITDA and sustained a robust EBITDA margin, demonstrating our operational efficiency and disciplined cost management. With a solid business strategy for the year and promising growth opportunities, we look forward to continuous achievements and success across Beyon's companies.'
'Due to the impact posed by non-operational factors such as the implementation of Domestic Minimum Top-Taxes (DMTT) and acquisition-related charges following our 2024 expansion strategy, net profit saw a minor year-on-year decline. Both of these were anticipated external factors, and Beyon continues to be well-positioned to capture emerging opportunities built on its operational strengths.'
Shaikh Abdulla further noted, 'This quarter sees us maintaining a healthy financial position, a strong balance sheet, and a clear strategic direction. Beyon continues to invest in innovation, infrastructure, and international expansion to deliver long-term growth and sustainable returns for our shareholders.'
From his end, Beyon CEO Andrew Kvaalseth said, 'The results of the first quarter of 2025 reflect the solid fundamentals of our business and the ongoing execution of our growth strategy. Across our businesses our focus continues to be on delivering innovative solutions and expanding our footprint. On the connectivity front, Batelco deployed the Kingdom's first private 5G network for industrial use, a transformative move for Bahrain's manufacturing sector, and also saw a brand uplift alongside the announcement of 'One Plan' a first of its kind product plan designed to integrate customers' mobile and home connectivity needs all in one single plan.'
'Within our digital companies, Beyon Connect's contribution to eKey 2.0 continues to gain traction across banking, finance, insurance and telecommunications sectors in alignment with our commitment to digital transformation. Beyon Cyber was recognized with three major accolades at the 2025 Cyber Security Excellence Awards, marking their rapid growth, regional market penetration, and innovative in-house developments. Beyon Solutions signed a strategic agreement to deliver cloud services with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Dedicated Region, supported by its comprehensive suite of managed services to support businesses and government entities in the Kingdom of Bahrain.'
'Looking ahead, we remain confident in our trajectory for 2025. With a strong foundation and forward-looking strategy, Beyon is strategically positioned to capitalise on emerging opportunities and continue delivering value for all stakeholders.'

MPs push to raise jobless pay to 80%

TDT | Manama A proposal to raise unemployment payments from 60 to 80 per cent of a person's previous wage is being studied by Parliament's Services Committee, with a top limit of BD1,000 per month. The suggested law, put forward by MPs Basma Mubarak, Hanan Fardan, Ahmed Al Salloom, Lulwa Al Romaihi, and Mamdouh Al Saleh, seeks better financial cover for people who have lost their jobs. According to a memorandum explaining the draft, the existing 60 per cent payout 'falls short of providing enough support,' making the lift to 80 per cent essential 'for improving the financial and social wellbeing of unemployed Bahrainis.' The document also points out that this shift would strengthen the Kingdom's social safety net, as laid down in Article 5(c) of the Constitution, ensuring state-backed help for those facing joblessness, old age, or disability. Higher living expenses and growing household debts were also mentioned by the MPs as key reasons why greater financial aid has become necessary for those who have lost their main income.

Gold Passes Euro As Second-Largest Global Reserve Asset: ECB

In the latest indication of gold's rising prominence in international finance, the yellow metal has surpassed the euro as the world's second-largest reserve asset, a European Central Bank analysis of year-end 2024 holdings has found. As the year ended, the US dollar represented 46% of central bank reserves, followed by gold at 20%, the euro at only 16%, while all other currencies collectively accounted for 18%. It's important to note this may understate the actual gold share, given the secrecy shrouding central bank gold-buying activity. Doubling their previous pace, central banks bought more than a thousand tons per year in 2022, 2023 and 2024, putting their holdings at their highest level since the late 1970s, as measured by weight, and close to the all-time high established in 1965. The current pace of central-bank and sovereign-wealth-fund purchases roughly equals a quarter of mined production. The ECB report attributes the trend in part to one of the biggest geo-political developments of recent years. 'Gold demand for monetary reserves surged sharply in the wake of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and has remained high,' the researchers wrote. Witnessing the freezing of Russia's foreign-reserve assets and the broader weaponization of the US dollar, central banks have rationally sought to reduce their dollar reliance — particularly those in US-adversarial positions or more likely to land in that category. 'In five of the 10 largest annual increases in the share of gold in foreign reserves since 1999, the countries involved faced sanctions in the same year or the previous year,' the report said. Of course, while the ECB won't emphasize it, the reckless printing of Western fiat currencies to enable profligate government spending is another major factor. Gold's 30% price surge in 2024 contributed to its second-place ranking as the year ended. However, its ascent has only continued since the timeframe of the ECB analysis, rising another 27% and approaching $3,500 per ounce. With buyers increasingly turning to gold as a hedge against political risks — versus inflation risk — there's plenty of reason to anticipate more upside, particularly in the wake of Israel's brazen attack on Iran in violation of international law, including the targeting of senior military officials and nuclear scientists in their residences. 'Given the strong run in gold prices, the momentum in gold buying could slow,' RBC Brewin Dolphin head of market analysis Janet Mui tells CNBC . 'But on a long-term basis, the uncertain geopolitical backdrop and desire for diversification will support the accumulation of gold as reserves.' While central banks are important players, the ECB notes that 70% of demand for gold comes from non-sovereign investors and those using it for jewelry.
