FIFA CLUB WORLD CUP 2025™: A VIBRANT OPENING CEREMONY KICKS OFF A NEW ERA FOR GLOBAL CLUB FOOTBALL
MILAN, June 13, 2025 /CNW/ -- Saturday 14 June at 7:15pm local time, the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami will explode with energy, colour, and football passion with a show featuring Latin rhythms and rap vibes.
Following the FIFA World Cup 2022™ in Qatar, FIFA has once again selected the acclaimed Olympic producer Balich Wonder Studio to creatively partner in the production of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™. This groundbreaking new tournament will feature 32 elite teams from all six confederations. It will culminate in what promises to be a spectacular final at New York New Jersey's MetLife Stadium on Sunday, 13 July.
Under the leadership of Ceremonies wizard Marco Balich, the creative team has enlisted some of America's top talents. Among them is Grammy-winning producer Emilio Estefan, who will present Vikina and Richaelio for a powerful performance featuring Latin rhythms and movement. Global stars French Montana and Swae Lee will take the stage with a high-energy performance that pays tribute to the global spirit of football.
The show, conceived by Artistic Director Carlos Navarrete Patiño around the concept of "A new era begins," is a journey with 117 performers that brings together some of the best creatives and artists in the entertainment field, such as Heather Shaw, Sooner Routhier, Shelagh O'Brien, Michael Peña, and Marina Toybina.
Marco Balich, Chairman of Balich Wonder Studio, stated: "After the FIFA World Cup Ceremony in Qatar, we are thrilled to support FIFA once again. It's a new chapter that brings together the teams representing all six footballing continents in a competitive tournament. We are very proud to be part of this event."

‘You get to know them and their habits'
We have a new leading rider at Assiniboia Downs, and this could be his year. Damario Bynoe won a slugfest with two-time leading rider Prayven Badrie this week, booting home four winners on Wednesday and another the day before, to count 15 victories on the season — one more than Badrie. The 33-year-old from Barbados had to be good, as arch-rival Badrie scored a four-bagger on Tuesday to open up in the standings. But Badrie's lead didn't last long, and Bynoe wasn't winning with all favourites either. MIKE DEAL / FREE PRESS Jockey Damario Bynoe was the leading rider this week at Assiniboia Downs, winning five races. He's set to ride JJ's American Diva (left) in a Monday race. He won the second race on Tuesday aboard Casually Classy ($11.30) for trainer Lise Pruitt and rolled hot into Wednesday, scoring a hat trick for trainer Mike Nault: aboard Load Abroad ($2.30) in the second race, Red Road Runner ($7.30) in the fourth and Twoleftoload ($5.00) in the fifth. He then followed up with a win aboard Diamond Concerto ($24.90) for trainer Wendy Anderson in the sixth race and capped off the card with a second-place finish in the last race aboard Designated Hitter at 13-1 for trainer Carl Anderson. While most riders seem to have a preferred style, it doesn't seem to make any difference to Bynoe. Some of his wins came on the lead, others from well off the pace — which is surprising from a style view, but not from a preparation standpoint. Bynoe also has some pedigree. His uncle, Hall of Fame jockey Patrick Husbands has been Canada's Sovereign Award-winning jockey eight times, and his 'little' brother Desean Bynoe is also riding at Woodbine. Bynoe first came to Canada in 2014, riding at Northlands Park in Edmonton, where he was the champion apprentice. 'I had a good run over there,' said Bynoe of his early Alberta success. But when Northlands closed, racing moved to Century Mile before COVID-19 halted racing, changing the landscape. 'There are a lot of jockeys there, and only three agents,' said Bynoe. 'The competition for mounts was fierce.' Bynoe won over 140 races in Alberta before moving his tack to Assiniboia Downs in 2023, where he finished second in the standings behind Antonio Whitehall with 41 wins. In 2024, he again finished second in the ASD standings, this time behind Badrie, with 43 wins. The move to Manitoba has suited Bynoe well. 'I'm more comfortable and relaxed here, and I ride for everyone,' he said, crediting his agent, former three-time leading rider Tim Gardiner, as 'one of the best here.' Bynoe's success isn't accidental either. He comes out every morning to work horses. 'You have to,' he said. 'There aren't a lot of exercise riders, so we (the jockeys) have to gallop most of the horses ourselves.' On a typical morning, he'll get on seven to ten horses. And he enjoys it. The morning work serves a dual purpose, keeping him fit and building relationships with the horses he'll ride in the actual races. 'It's different, it's better if you're on them in the morning,' said Bynoe. 'You get to know them and their habits.' There isn't a lot of time for anything besides work, 'I have to go home and sleep all day before the races, to regenerate,' said Bynoe, whose hobbies back home include fishing and road tennis, the latter of which he was a champion in. When fishing in Barbadian waters, he catches 'all different types of fish,' including flying fish, snapper and barracuda from boats off the island's coast. Fishing helps with the mental aspect of race riding, while road tennis is the perfect fitness builder for a jockey, as Bynoe illustrated with a video on his phone. The court in road tennis is about as big as your living room, the tennis ball used has no hair on it, and the net looks like it's less than a foot high. How hard could it be? Don't kid yourself. Road tennis is like high-speed 'Twister' on Red Bull with 30 squats per minute required for good measure. And you don't just play for one minute. Oh, and you have to hit the ball over the net, too. Sounds like fun, right? But great for building the powerful thigh muscles and knee strength you need for riding horses at 40 m.p.h. 'You have to be fit to play,' laughed Bynoe. 'You're not just going to get out of bed one day and decide you're going to play road tennis.' Unless you want to win. Like Bynoe.

US flag football star Ashlea Klam and Houston Texans push for recognition of sport for Texas girls
HOUSTON (AP) — When U.S. Women's Flag National Team member Ashlea Klam was in high school in Texas, her school wouldn't let her participate in signing day, even though she had earned a scholarship to play flag football collegiately. 'It was extremely hurtful knowing all of the work that I put in and my high school didn't want to celebrate it,' she recalled this week. Klam hopes other girls don't have to experience what she did, and she's working with the Houston Texans Foundation and the franchise's She's Next movement as the Texans' global flag ambassador to help promote female participation in the sport in Texas and beyond. This week, as the U.S. women's and girls teams assembled in California for USA Football's Summer Series, Klam and the rest of the players were celebrated, receiving curated gift boxes from the Texans and foundation vice president Hannah McNair. The boxes featured items players had requested, including headgear, gloves, sports bras, arm sleeves, slides and jumpsuits, all adorned with the She's Next slogan and the Texans' logo. 'We absolutely loved it,' said Klam, who has led Keiser University to the NAIA flag football national championship game the past two seasons. 'It was things that true flag football players want. It's really exciting to know that we are being seen and that we are being heard, and especially from organizations like the Houston Texans, and knowing that they really stepped up to make all of the (teams) and women who are part of USA Football feel really special.' Men's and women's flag football will be Olympic sports for the first time in Los Angeles in 2028. McNair and the Texans foundation began focusing on girls' flag football in 2023 and she's been thrilled to see growth in the sport among school-age girls in the last two years. 'I'm so excited about it,' she said. 'The growth of the sport, the excitement, the empowerment it gives females being able to play football. We know what it can do to communities and for individuals but pushing that towards scholarships and educational opportunities for these female athletes is something that we're really focused on.' High school girls' flag football is currently sanctioned as a varsity sport in 15 states, and McNair and the Texans are working with policymakers in the state to push Texas to sanction it. For now, the team's girls flag football program includes more than 2,000 high school athletes in Houston, Austin and El Paso. McNair attended the championships in Houston and El Paso recently and loved seeing the impact the game is making. 'It is emotional and also so moving and inspiring to see these athletes and the excitement they have on the field with their teammates, the celebrations,' she said. 'To me it's the ultimate team sport, and to be able to push this sport forward with the interest of all these high school girls and young female athletes has been something that continues to help push us to this next step of trying to get it sanctioned here in Texas.' That's something Klam hopes happens soon so that girls playing flag football in the state will have opportunities she lacked. 'I think it's crazy that I've been able to represent my country at this level, but I was never able to represent my high school,' she said. 'So having that sanctioned and giving so many more girls the opportunity and allowing them to feel like this is something that we're serious about and you have a future, that would would mean a lot to me.' ___ AP NFL:

Article content There's this feeling that fixing the goaltending here is as simple as looking up plumbers on Google and having somebody come by to fix the leaking toilet. Article content Article content For sure, Skinner was outplayed by Sergei Bobrovsky in the final against Florida, but Bob's arguably on a career path to the Hall of Fame with his two Cup rings and his two Vezina trophies, plus his 445 regular-season wins, top 10 all-time. Article content Skinner has only played three NHL seasons (189 regular-season games, 50 in the playoffs), not Bob's 15 years (777 regular-season games and 117 in the playoffs). But he did get the Oilers to the last two Cup finals, with ample help from Pickard along the way this spring. He was definitely better than the ballyhooed Jake Oettinger in the Western Conference final against Dallas, not just this year, but last spring. Article content So, how bad can Skinner be? He wasn't the reason the Oilers lost to Florida this June; they're just too deep, reminding people of the early 80s New York Islanders with their talent and their wear-you-down philosophy of play. Article content Article content Again, Skinner is a good goalie who is in the mix for one of the three Olympic spots next February. But, there still could be a different configuration in net, like maybe somebody to push Skinner for playing time. Article content Article content 'I don't want to single the goaltending out,' said Bowman, who balked at trading for goaltending help at the deadline, maybe because he won three Cups in Chicago with Corey Crawford and Antti Niemi in net, so good goalies but not great ones. Article content But, he knows the narrative in this city, where Skinner, an accountable, nice guy with lots of ability, gave up two goals in the first period of all five starts in the final series after outplaying Oettinger and Hill, specifically, in heavyweight matchups earlier. Article content 'It's something we'll investigate this summer — what's the best path moving forward for our team. It's hard to predict where that's going to go. We have to have lots of conversations about what other teams are looking to do,' said Bowman, who did concede that the forward group and the goalies would be evaluated most deeply.
