Elio, review: Pixar's voyage to space is refreshingly weird
Elio is an agreeable junior space odyssey that's a safe bet for families in the run-up to the summer holidays, even if it's not destined to be a Pixar film for the ages. You can pick all sorts of holes in it here and there – a game for restless adults, maybe. But plenty of younger viewers will be spirited away with no complaints.
Whatever the teething troubles that made its budget soar to $300 million, the film has at least been shepherded up to par. While it's unlikely to do a fraction of the $1.7 billion business Pixar's Inside Out 2 managed last year, it has a refreshingly zany take on one boy's all-consuming hobby.
Elio (voiced by Yonas Asuncion Kibreab) is a recently orphaned 11-year-old, who feels lonely, despite all the best efforts of the aunt (Zoe Saldaña) who's raising him. A bit of a nerdy cipher, he seems to be somewhere on the spectrum. He's not the first neurodivergent character from this studio (take Dory in Finding Nemo), but feels a few drafts away from being as endearing as those others. If that difference is, in a sense, his 'superpower' – as this film suggests – it's puzzling how little he gets to flex it.
His one solace is being obsessed with space, and he yearns for some connection in the cold reaches of the universe: life on Earth has simply not panned out the way he wants. Miraculously, his prayers are answered, well beyond making radio contact with alien civilisations. An intergalactic parliament zaps him into their midst and considers him for an ambassadorial post – gullible enough to believe he's Earth's leader, simply because he tells them so.
The odd bods in this council owe much to the wibbly senators in Star Wars. There's a playful dash of Douglas Adams ' absurdity there, too. When they refuse to elect a warmongering bully named Lord Grigon (Brad Garrett), he declares Armageddon and only Elio has the guts to enter into peace talks. Grigon wears a giant armoured carapace and wields cannons, but inside looks like a tardigrade, much like his chubby son Glordon (Remy Edgerly), who dreads the day he's supposed to strap in and become a feared war machine like his dad.
The oddity of Elio is that this subplot is quite a lot more touching than the hero's journey. A father-son reconciliation between these piglet-sized space slugs is the one thing in danger of moistening the eye.
The film is too scattershot to be high-end Pixar. It tries to add jeopardy with a breakneck voyage through flying debris in space, a sequence that feels arbitrarily inserted. Still, this vision of the cosmos is goofy enough to keep your youngsters beguiled for 90 minutes.

Post-Ozempic Lizzo leaves fans baffled with bizarre first pitch at Dodgers game
American singer and rapper Lizzo was on hand with an unusual first pitch before the Los Angeles Dodgers' game against the San Diego Padres on Thursday night. After being invited to take part in the traditional pregame ceremony at Dodger Stadium, Lizzo left fans baffled with her bizarre approach to pitching in LA. She first took her place on the mound as Dodgers star Mookie Betts waited in preparation to take the catch, only to run forward in her huge white high heels while pretending to throw the ball twice. The 37-year-old, who recently admitted to briefly using Ozempic to aid in her extreme weight loss transformation, then turned around and ran back to the mound, before finally producing a respectable pitch into Betts which bounced before finding his glove. A number of fans were left confused by her two fake throws, with one writing on X: 'The longest, [most] pointless and stupidest first pitch ever'. Another commented: 'So stupid. Stop trying to make it about you'. While a third simply asked: 'What the f**k Is this?' Lizzo just threw out a very interesting first pitch at Dodger Stadium 🤣 — Dodgers Nation (@DodgersNation) June 20, 2025 Others, however, saw the funny side of Lizzo's twist on pitching. 'Love it,' one fan commented. Another joked about the Dodgers: 'We need her to start'. 'Still better than 50 cent,' a third said while referencing the rapper's infamous first pitch at a 2014 New York Mets game, widely considered one of the worst of all time. Lizzo, who has confidently showed off her slimmer frame on social media of late, opened up about her Ozempic experiment during Thursday's episode of Trisha Paytas' Just Trish podcast. The Grammy winner explained that she started to take the GLP-1 medication at the beginning of her weight loss journey in 2023, but soon came to the conclusion that it wouldn't help her in the long term. 'I tried everything. Ozempic works because you eat less food, yeah? So if you eat right, it makes you feel full.' Lizzo then added, 'But if you can just do that on your own and get mind over matter, it's the same thing.'

Livvy Dunne leaves fans stunned with shocking sexual reference about herself and Madelyn Cline
Livvy Dunne sent social media into a spin on Friday after she appeared to make a steamy sexual reference about herself and actress Madelyn Cline. While the LSU icon regularly poses in her bikini, she is relatively clean-cut when it comes to her interactions with fans... until now, that is. The interaction began when an X user described the upcoming College World Series between LSU and Coastal Carolina as the 'Madelyn Cline vs Livvy Dunne Bowl', given the pair's previous education at the rival schools. The fairly innocent comment was then taken deep into left-field by Dunne, who surprisingly replied: 'Gooner World Series'. Fans were immediately left stunned by the apparent sexual reference posted by the gymnastics icon, with one writing: 'This can't be real.' Dunne's post quickly went viral and many asked whether the LSU icon had been hacked Another added, 'had to check three times that this wasn't a parody account,' while a third noted: 'She get hacked???' 'Gooner' appears to be a reference to a form of masturbation in which the person nears climax, before stopping. Therefore, it is perhaps surprising that Dunne made such a reference to her 186,000 followers on X. Cline, meanwhile, is an actress and model most famous for her role in the Netflix series Outer Banks. She is from South Carolina and attended Coastal Carolina University briefly, before dropping out and moving to LA to pursue her acting career. Others thought they had inadvertently clicked on a parody account after seeing the tweet Cline poses for photos at the premiere of the most recent season of Netflix hit Outer Banks Dunne is most famous for her time as a gymnast at LSU, where she met her current boyfriend, now Pittsburgh Pirates star Paul Skenes. She has become a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit star in recent years too, regularly posing for the magazine in various locations around the world, and even recently making her runway debut. It was at that Miami Beach appearance on May 31 that she stunned fans by performing the splits in her bikini.

What to know about the summer solstice in the UK
The summer solstice marks the official start of summer, occurring when Earth's North Pole is angled closest to the Sun, bringing the longest day and shortest night to the Northern Hemisphere. This year, the exact moment of the solstice will be at 10:42 PM Eastern Time on June 20, which translates to 3:42 AM on June 21 in the United Kingdom. People worldwide traditionally observe the change of seasons around the solstice with various celebrations, including bonfires, festivals, and Fête de la Musique. The word "solstice" means "solar standstill," reflecting how the Sun's angle appears to shift very gradually for about 10 days around this time. Ancient monuments like Stonehenge, Karnak, and Chankillo reveal that civilizations have tracked the Sun's northern and southern travels for over 5,000 years.
