Three UAE schools named as finalists in global contest

Three UAE schools have been named as finalists in a global contest that highlights institutions for their innovation, environmental awareness, community collaborations and much else.
Dubai British School Jumeirah Park, Arbor School in Dubai and Applied Technology Schools – Umm Al Quwain Campus are named in the top 10 in different categories of the World's Best School Prizes.
Run by T4 Education, the World's Best School Prizes were founded in 2022 with the aim, organisers say, of sharing 'the best practices of schools that are changing lives in their classrooms and far beyond their walls'.
The contest is split into five categories, with DBSJP shortlisted for Community Collaboration, Arbor School for Environmental Education and ATS-UAQ for Innovation.
The other categories are Overcoming Adversity and Supporting Healthy Lives, with the winners in each category to be chosen by a judging panel and announced in October. There is an additional Community Choice Award selected by public vote.
Along with the other finalists, the three UAE schools will be invited to the World Schools Summit in Abu Dhabi on November 15 and 16, when they will share their experiences with education experts from around the globe.
Alan Williamson, chief executive of Taaleem, which runs DBSJP, said the company was 'immensely proud' that the school had 'deservedly' been named as a top 10 finalist.
'This international recognition reflects the outstanding work of the school's dedicated teachers, talented students and highly supportive community,' he said.
'Their unwavering commitment to excellence, innovation and inclusion exemplifies the very best of Taaleem's educational values.'
DBSJP, which has a kindergarten, primary school and secondary school, has been named as a Community Collaboration finalist for what T4 Education described as 'a community-driven approach that integrates families and the broader community into the learning journey'. This, the competition organisers said, meant every child had 'a personalised pathway to success'.
'Driven by community involvement, the comprehensive model gives equal weight to sports, art and academia to ensure every child is seen and every talent is nurtured,' T4 Education said.
'With academic achievement a primary focus in the region, the role of sports and the arts in shaping personal development has often been neglected and the school sought to address this.'
T4 Education praised the school for its inclusivity efforts, especially for children with special needs.
Top-class education
Arbor School, a kindergarten, primary school and secondary school in Al Furjan, Dubai, secured its place as an Environmental Education finalist for integrating eco-literacy into its curriculum.
The aim is to develop children who can tackle real-world problems in areas such as waste reduction and energy efficiency.
'Embedding sustainability, ethical stewardship and environmental education into its learning model was a direct response to the critical role education plays in addressing ecological challenges,' T4 Education said.
The school campus has six biodomes, described as 'living laboratories', where pupils can learn in a hands-on way about sustainability, ecosystems and plant cultivation.
Pupils have been involved in projects such as the Dubai Oyster Project, for which they worked alongside conservation groups and local restaurants to restore reefs off Dubai, and have their own eco-council, eco-ambassadors and what the school calls eco-influencers.
The school has tried to reduce its environmental footprint by cutting waste, conserving energy and having buses powered by biodiesel.
ATS-UAQ secured its Innovation finalist spot thanks to a career-focused and project-based curriculum.
"This recognition holds deep meaning for our community, where passionate teachers and ambitious students work together each day with the dream to rise, lead, and inspire," said Rasha Diab, vice principal of Applied Technology Schools - UAQ.
"Being named among the top 10 most innovative schools globally affirms that with unity, purpose and belief in education, excellence can thrive anywhere. It also reflects our commitment to preparing the next generation of scientists, engineers and technicians who will lead the UAE's innovative and future-focused industries — a vision that drives all we do at ATS schools."
Pupils are prepared for industry through 'clusters', which include workshops, hands-on learning experiences and brainstorming sessions, allowing them to focus on fields such as business, AI, health sciences or education.
'This vocational and technical training, combined with a curriculum that blends core academic subjects, ensures graduates are accepted into top universities and thrive in careers directly related to their chosen cluster,' T4 Education said.
Vikas Pota, the founder of T4 Education and the World's Best School Prizes, said a good education 'has never been more important'.

What began as a personal bond with dogs became a life-changing mission for Mohammad Anwar. He turned his deep love for animals into pioneering domestic dog training, becoming the first Emirati project specialising in producing police dogs trained for all needs. At just 11, Anwar developed a deep bond with dogs, which started by feeding strays leftovers from home. 'I used to care for street dogs,' he said. 'It became such a big part of my life that school started slipping.' Concerned, his father made a deal: if Anwar improved in school, he would be rewarded with a dog. Anwar kept his promise and had his first dog, a German Shepherd. But his next dog, Caesar, truly changed his life. 'Caesar was like my shadow,' Anwar recalled. 'He stayed with me for nearly six years.' Their bond was tested after a football match when Anwar was attacked. As others ran, Caesar broke free and rushed to protect him. 'He started licking the blood off my face, letting out a sound like he was crying,' he said. 'He was the only one who came back for me.' That moment sparked a mission: 'I realised nothing is more loyal than a dog.' Determined to deepen his knowledge, Anwar taught himself dog behaviour through YouTube before enrolling in specialised courses in the Netherlands. The training helped him understand the importance of both positive and negative reinforcement, as well as how to stay calm and responsive while working with animals. 'Knowing when to be calm and how to respond correctly makes all the difference in earning a dog's trust,' he said. By 2015, the idea for a specialised dog training centre took root. Two years later, in 2017, he officially launched the project. Today, Anwar's facility breeds and trains dogs for various professional roles, including search and rescue, narcotics detection, criminal investigations, and protection of critical infrastructure. The centre houses up to 46 highly trained dogs at any given time. 'We've reached a stage where we're exporting trained dogs to countries like the US, UK, Switzerland, and across the Arab world,' Anwar said. Government agencies now rely on his dogs, and his team also runs specialised training programmes for security personnel. But the journey has not been without challenges. Relocating his training centre multiple times across the Emirates has been one of Anwar's biggest hurdles. 'Each move meant starting over financially,' he said. The shift from Sharjah to Umm Al Quwain was particularly tough due to a lack of income. 'I put everything I had into it,' he recalled. In 2022, he moved again to Ras Al Khaimah, where he finally found the needed space and support. 'I hoped to stay at least ten years to settle and repay my debts.' During those tough times, one of Anwar's dogs, Boo, who was kept for emotional support, played a crucial role. 'When I was overwhelmed, he'd do silly things to make me laugh. He could sense my stress and helped me feel grounded,' he said. Anwar's resilience and dedication have not gone unnoticed. He has won over 23 titles in international dog competitions, taking top-spot trophies in prestigious shows in the UAE and Russia. In 2022, his team achieved a significant milestone by winning first place in the KNPV (Royal Dutch Police Dog Sport) championship in the Netherlands, one of the most respected competitions in police dog training. Currently, his centre produces around 25 to 30 high-performance dogs annually. His next target is to increase that number to 70 per year. 'The more the world sees our quality, the more they want. But quality can't be rushed,' he said. Anwar is quick to credit his team for the centre's success. 'I couldn't have done this alone. Their dedication has been important to this journey.' Looking ahead, 'In five years, I want this to be the largest dog training centre in the Middle East. After that, one that will be the top source globally,' he noted.

UAE continues to lead relief efforts Amid the suffering, UAE-led humanitarian initiatives have played a vital role. Sharjah Charity International (SCI) has been at the forefront through the 'Tarahum for Gaza' campaign and 'Gallant Knight 3' operation, both under the directives of UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, affirming the country's enduring humanitarian commitment. Sharjah Charity's response In conjunction with World Refugee Day on 20 June, Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Sharjah Charity International (SCI), reiterated the religious and humanitarian duty to support Gaza. He described the organisation as a key contributor to the UAE's broader efforts to aid those affected and restore life in the region. Over 116,000 support packages delivered Sheikh Saqr stated that the charity had implemented a wide range of relief projects, delivering around 116,000 diverse aid packages. These included over 32,000 food parcels distributed to displaced families and 10,000 blankets and heavy garments to help residents survive winter without heating. Supporting children amid crisis The charity also addressed children's urgent needs by supplying 1,728 packs of baby formula, a product absent from local markets. Additionally, the charity distributed 3,000 fully stocked school bags to children returning to education under challenging circumstances. Water relief and infrastructure support The charity tackled water shortages by operating water tankers and restoring damaged wells. Recently, it launched a fundraising drive to dig 12 new wells, expected to benefit more than 312,000 people across Gaza. Food security through field kitchens and bakeries Efforts to ensure food security included running 20 field kitchens serving daily meals to approximately 45,000 people and operating 10 bakeries producing bread for nearly 9,500 beneficiaries, addressing the acute bread shortage. UAE's global humanitarian vision Sheikh Saqr affirmed that these efforts reflect the UAE's broader commitment to immediate relief and long-term support in crisis zones. He noted continued coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and international partners to expand operations and meet urgent needs. Call to sustain solidarity with Gaza He urged ongoing support for Gaza-related initiatives, emphasising that the aid carries not just material relief but also messages of hope and solidarity from the UAE's people. The 'Tarahum for Gaza' campaign and the 'Gallant Knight 3' operation stand as enduring symbols of meaningful humanitarian action.
