Epsom Derby 2025: the pin-stickers' guide
It may not attract the attention it once did but the Epsom Derby remains one of the biggest days on the racing calendar and this year's renewal of the iconic race shapes as an intriguing one. Will Aidan O'Brien win a record-extending 11th premier Classic? Will 2000 Guineas hero Ruling Court stay for Godolphin? Can Galway jockey Rossa Ryan add a Derby to a CV that already includes an Arc? How will supplemented French pair Midak and New Ground fare? Questions aplenty and while we'll only know the answers shortly after 3.30pm on Saturday, here's our horse-by-horse guide to the 246th Derby.

Shaped well when second in the Dante and going a furlong and a half further could bring about further improvement. Each-way claims.

Victorious in two Derby trials at Leopardstown and looks sure to stay the trip but the record of Dubawi colts in this Classic (0 from nine) is a niggling worry.

Second in a weak French Group 1 as a juvenile but a record of one win from seven starts doesn't inspire confidence.

Second to stablemate Delacroix in the Ballysax before winning the Dee Stakes at Chester. Could be the pacesetter.

Fifth in the Dante, the Frankel colt should appreciate the step up in trip but may struggle to keep tabs on the leaders in the early part of the race.

Last of six at Lingfield last month and there's no logical reason why he should fare any better in this company.
13: Ruling Court

If the 2000 Guineas hero stays, he'll win as his Newmarket triumph is undoubtedly the strongest form on offer. That's a significant if though.
14: Sea Scout

Odds: 50-1
Ticks the track box having won at Epsom in April but saw his limitations exposed when eighth in the Dante last time out.
15: Stanhope Gardens

Got within a neck of Delacroix as a two-year-old and while his win at Salisbury last month proved little, he has better prospects than many here.

A Group 1 winner in France last season but was firmly put in his place by Delacroix at Leopardstown last month. Hard to fancy.

Winter favourite for this Classic but surrendered his unbeaten record when sixth in the Dante. Being drawn in stall 19 is a further negative.

Odds: 20-1
Ran a big race at a big price when fourth in the 2000 Guineas but it's hard to see his stamina lasting over four furlongs further.

Odds: 66-1
Unbeaten in two starts as a two-year-old but could only manage seventh in the Dante last month. Little chance.
Darren Norris' verdict
History suggests opposing Team Ballydoyle in the Derby is an act of folly and it's easy to make a coherent case for Delacroix giving Aidan O'Brien a record-extending 11th win in the premier Classic. However, the Dubawi colt has looked more solid than spectacular in his Leopardstown wins so a chance is taken on PRIDE OF ARRAS landing the spoils for Arc-winning pair Ralph Beckett and Rossa Ryan. His lack of experience could be viewed as a negative but 2013 victor Ruler of The Word and 2022 hero Desert Crown had also only run twice before rocking up at Epsom and Pride Of Arras showed enough at York to suggest he has all the attributes required to become the 10th Dante winner since 1980 to go on to Derby glory. Should stamina prove Ruling Court's undoing, unbeaten French raider Midak can hit the frame at a decent price.

Mark English goes sub 1:44 again at Paris Diamond League
Mark English recorded the second fastest time of his career on his way to a sixth-place finish in the men's 800m at the Diamond League Meet in Paris. The French capital hosted its first major athletics event since last year's Olympic Games and English clocked his second sub 1:44 of the month. The Finn Valley athlete, who became the first Irishman to break 1:44 in the 800m earlier this month, posted a time of 1:43.98 in a race won by Spain's Mohamed Attaoui in 1:42.73. English has enjoyed a stellar 2025 season, lowering his Irish record twice in less than a fortnight. It follows on from a European 800m bronze in March.

Irish joy as Cercene upstages Zarigana in Coronation Stakes
CERCENE GAVE JOCKEY Gary Carroll and trainer Joseph Murphy a day to remember when bravely holding off French hotpot Zarigana to land the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. Billed as a clash between French 1,000 Guineas winner Zarigana and Owen Burrows' supplemented Falakeyah, it was the Irish outsider who stole the show to become the race's longest-priced winner at 33-1. Falakeyah's challenge faded tamely having raced keenly, but 6-4 favourite Zarigana looked prime to pounce in hands of Mickael Barzalona and in fact looked to briefly have passed Cercene. However, Irish 1,000 third Cercene was not to be denied and proved her Curragh performance was no fluke as she battled back to secure a half-length verdict. Murphy said: 'We always liked her. We left her a little longer but good fillies you always leave a little longer, you never put them over. Advertisement 'He got her switched off, he's confident and he's ridden for me 17 years now. 'This is 50 years of work, that's what it is, of love and care, and all for the owners we have, all our people, it's just a whole group of people together. This is heaven on earth. She's by Australia – a sire I love – and her half-brother (Perotto) won the Britannia so the pedigree was there and if she was an inch bigger I wouldn't have her! 'I was hoping Lake Victoria stayed in because we'd have a lesser race and then we'd have pace and ride her easier, you know what I mean. 'She travelled well, Gary gave her a great ride, and we were thinking that being by Australia she'd stay as well. She was headed and came back again. She waited for something to head her, but she's very tough and a dream to train. The plan was today so now we'll draw new plans.' Carroll said: 'It's unbelievable. I've been riding a long time now and been placed in plenty of Group Ones. This is my first one and if I was ever to ride a Group One winner it was for Joe Murphy. 'I've been riding for him since I was a 7lb claimer and he's been very, very good to me so I'm delighted I can repay him. 'She ran a blinder at the Curragh where the slow pace didn't suit. We went a bit better gallop there today, got to the front a furlong and a half out and she waited, the French horse came and headed me; to be fair to this one she's not big but she's very tough and she stuck her head out for me. 'It's hugely satisfying to win a Group One. They're so hard to come by. Good horses are very hard to come by. To do this, Royal Ascot, magic. 'After the Guineas run, a better run race there she'd have finished closer again, I think she's taken a step forward from there and she's ultra-tough, she doesn't know when to give up.'
