Announcement on defence equipment factory in Salem soon, says union minister H D Kumaraswamy

Salem: Union steel and heavy industries minister H D Kumaraswamy on Saturday said an announcement regarding the establishment of a defence equipment manufacturing factory on the premises of Salem Steel Plant would be made soon. "The proposal is currently in the early stages of discussion. A formal announcement in this regard will be made in the next four to five months," he said after attending the International Yoga Day celebrations at the Salem Steel Plant, where he did various yoga asanas along with the plant officials, members of trade unions and employees. Addressing the media, he commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi for promoting yoga across the globe and inspiring people. He said efforts were on to revitalize the Salem Steel Plant on the technical and marketing fronts. "In the 2003-2004 financial year, the plant was profitable. However, the profitability has since declined. The primary goal is to redevelop the plant and restore its profitability by developing various new products." Referring to the one nation, one election policy, Kumaraswamy said the BJP was not fostering division, but promoting unity within the country. "The BJP's goal is to strengthen its presence in Tamil Nadu, and the party is actively working to achieve this goal. Hence, some regional parties are criticizing the BJP." On Friday, the Union minister had planted a sapling on the Salem Steel Plant premises and toured the entire facility. He had also met the representatives of labour unions and promised to address their concerns.

No politics in coop bank appointment, says UBT's Tejasvee Ghosalkar

Mumbai: A day after being appointed as a director on the Mumbai District Central Co-operative Bank (MDCCB), former Shiv Sena (UBT) corporator Tejasvee Ghosalkar said on Saturday that politics and the cooperative sector were two different things. Ghosalkar stated that it would be wrong to view her appointment through a political lens. She said that she did not receive any offer from the BJP to join Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena and that she remained with Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray. "I sincerely thank the chairman of the bank, Pravin Darekar, and the entire board of directors for unanimously electing me to the post of director of Mumbai District Central Cooperative Bank. The post was vacant after my husband Abhishek Ghosalkar's death. A year ago, my father-in-law Vinod Ghosalkar and I met Darekar and requested him in this regard. He told us he would try to get this done. The true spirit of cooperation is to keep the political party leaning out of the cooperative sector, so it would be very wrong to look at this decision from a political perspective," Tejasvee Ghosalkar said. "This is an important and first chapter of my life in the cooperative sector, but I assure you that I will do a good job by utilising the experience of the work done by my family so far and the knowledge gained from Abhishek. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Lock In Your Battery Before The July 1st Rush Australian Solar Batteries Get Quote Undo I once again thank all the leadership. I am still with Uddhav Thackeray Ji, and he knew about me trying for an appointment as director of the bank," Tejasvee Ghosalkar said. BJP MLC and chairman of MDCCB said on Friday that the bank's board appointed Tejasvee Ghosalkar as one of the bank's directors. The appointment has created ripples in political circles, leading to speculation that Tejasvee could be on her way to the BJP ahead of the BMC polls.

Madhya Pradesh To Hike Ladli Behna Payout, Opposition Flags Towering Debt

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav has announced that the monthly financial assistance for women under the Ladli Behna scheme will be increased to Rs 1,500 from Diwali, which is in October. Currently, around 1.27 crore women beneficiaries receive Rs 1,250 per month. The move is being seen as a continuation of the BJP's flagship welfare initiative launched ahead of the 2023 state elections. Speaking to the media, Dr Yadav said, "The announcement in our Sankalp Patra is of Rs 3,000. We made it with full confidence and will fulfill it. The scheme began with Rs 1,000, then we increased it to Rs 1,250. From Diwali, it will be Rs 1,500." The hike will place an additional burden of Rs 310 crore on the state exchequer every month, pushing the annual cost of the scheme beyond Rs 22,000 crore. When the scheme was launched in 2023, 1.29 crore women were enrolled. The number rose slightly to 1.31 crore in October 2023 but has now come down to 1.27 crore. The government has admitted in the state Assembly that while new names are currently not being added, existing names are being removed based on age and other eligibility criteria. BJP MLA Bhagwan Das Sabnani defended the move, saying, "The Chief Minister is committed to empowering women. The Congress earlier mocked the scheme, but now they are afraid because the government is consistently fulfilling its promises." Congress leader Shailendra Patel criticised the financial viability of the scheme, stating, "The economic condition of Madhya Pradesh is deteriorating. No one knows how much more they will borrow. The state is practically being run on God's mercy." Rising Debt Poses Fiscal Challenges The state budget for 2025-26 stands at Rs 4.21 lakh crore. However, the government has already borrowed Rs 9,500 crore this financial year, taking the total outstanding debt to approximately Rs 4.31 lakh crore. This marks a 115 per cent increase in the state's debt over the last five years. In 2019, the total debt stood around Rs 2 lakh crore.
