Elderly couple falls on cratered road, injured

Time of India05-05-2025

Nagpur: A 68-year-old man and his 58-year-old wife suffered injuries after slipping off their two-wheeler on Sunday while navigating the broken stretch of road outside their home in Aradhana Nagar-1, Manewada-Besa Road. The locals shared disturbing visuals showing crater-sized potholes, stagnant sewage water, and a road surface so eroded that it resembles a dumping yard more than a city street.
The visuals show gaping potholes filled with foul-smelling water, garbage-choked drains, and no motorable path. With monsoon weeks away, residents fear the situation could turn catastrophic.
The accident triggered fresh outrage from local residents, who said the road has been in ruins for over five years despite repeated complaints to the
Nagpur Improvement Trust
(NIT) and Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC).
Senior officials from NIT and NMC expressed helplessness, stating that the locality was settled in the area meant for gardens and playgrounds. "Hence the residents are being deprived of basic amenities," they said.
The injured have been identified as Vijay Sadashiv Warade (68) and his wife Vandana (58). Their son, Bhushan Warade, a resident of the same locality, has written multiple letters to authorities warning about the deteriorating condition of the stretch between Shivkrupa Nagar and Aradhana Nagar-1.
"My parents had left the house on a two-wheeler when it skidded off loose gravel and water-logged muck. This is not an accident — this is the result of criminal civic negligence," a miffed Bhushan Warade told TOI.
Warade has been writing to Nagpur Improvement Trust since February 2 this year, urging the agency to de-reserve a portion of land (Mouza Manewada, Khasra No. 81/1) that remains tagged in the development plan and has blocked basic infrastructure work. However, NIT's responses dated March 26 and April 21 dismissed the urgency, citing procedural delays and fund constraints.
In his follow-up letters, local residents slammed the hypocrisy, pointing out that similar reservations were lifted in Khamla (Khasra Nos. 82–95) and the land was approved for residential use — a move backed by NIT's own letter. "When it comes to south Nagpur, we're told there's no budget or legal clarity. But in other parts of the city, they bend rules and clear files overnight," he said.
Locals are now demanding that NIT urgently submit a Section 37 proposal to the state govt to lift the reservation and initiate road construction. "If NIT and NMC wait for someone to die before acting, we'll hold them accountable. We deserve dignity and safety, not neglect and excuses," local residents demanded.

NMC Digging Ban Junked, Roads Battered All Around

Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation's (NMC) ban on road digging after May 31 has turned into a farce as unauthorised excavation continues across the city. NMC's water works department reported digging at at least 18 locations in city, openly defying municipal commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari's directive. Despite clear instructions to all departments and contractors not to undertake any trenching during the monsoon, civic officials failed to enforce the order, leaving citizens to suffer through crumbling roads, traffic snarls, and unsafe commuting conditions. Chaudhari not only barred digging after May 31 but also ordered restoration of previously excavated roads before the onset of rains. He warned of criminal action and penalties against violators. However, multiple agencies — ranging from utility firms to private contractors — carried on excavation work, particularly for cable laying and infrastructure upgrades, many without permission from the NMC's public works department. Nowhere is this failure more evident than in areas under Mangalwari zone. Near Old Katol Naka Square, for instance, the road remains half-cut and dangerously uneven. Despite being aware of at least two such violations, the zone officials have not acted. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Perdagangkan CFD Emas dengan Broker Tepercaya IC Markets Mendaftar Undo Across the city, the situation is no better. Deep trenches at many locations are left unbarricaded, and patchwork left unfinished has turned the stretch into a hazard for two-wheeler riders and pedestrians. Residents report frequent near-miss accidents and daily inconveniences, especially during peak traffic hours. Many key stretches have been dug up and abandoned, with debris dumped by the roadside. In several locations, construction mud and loose gravel lie scattered, adding to the danger with the monsoon approaching. Though some pipeline and power supply damage occurred due to this careless work, the civic body's bigger failure is in not restoring roads and ensuring accountability. Even large projects like AMRUT 2.0 and private cable laying are being carried out without adhering to post-digging restoration norms. Mounds of debris are left unattended for days, further clogging the already narrow roads. OCW, the city's water operator, reported 17 incidents in June where their pipelines were damaged due to such illegal roadwork and has sought action against contractors. While the NMC claims to have lodged FIRs against at least three contractors in connection with damages, there's no visible deterrence on the ground. The commissioner's own order to hold errant officials accountable for failing to stop illegal digging remains largely unimplemented. Even Chaudhari, during his visit to the Hanuman Nagar zone office, was appraised by the ex-corporators that despite levying a Rs1 crore fine on contractors entrusted to carry out sewerage network works under the Amrut 2.0 project, the dug-up roads were still not restored. This shows the casual approach of the NMC's PWD engineers to implement the civic chief's diktat.

Mango Tree Felled Despite Permit Limits, NMC Seeks FIR Against Doctor

Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Thursday asked Ambazari police to register a criminal case against a Dharampeth Extension resident for allegedly cutting down an over 50-year-old mango tree on the pretext of pruning, in violation of the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Tree Preservation & Conservation Act, 1975. In a letter sent on Thursday, NMC garden superintendent Amol Chorpagar urged police to book the resident — reportedly a doctor living in Shanti Niketan Colony — for exceeding the scope of a pruning permit granted by the civic body. "Despite clear conditions, the entire upper crown of the mango tree was removed, leaving only the trunk. This cannot be justified as safety pruning," Chorpagar stated. The doctor submitted an application on June 2, claiming the mango tree was dangerously leaning and sought permission for partial removal along with trimming two adjoining branches. After a site visit, the garden department granted conditional approval on June 10, issuing a permit dated June 13 that listed three non-negotiable conditions: cut only the leaning portion, leave rest untouched, and ensure no obstruction to traffic. The permit explicitly warned that any overreach would invite prosecution. However, during a follow-up inspection on June 18 around 2pm, NMC officials found the entire canopy of the mango tree was cut, far beyond what was allowed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The act was cited as a violation of Section 8(1) of the 1975 Act, which prohibits unauthorised felling of trees. The letter requests that an FIR be registered under Section 21(1), Chapter VIII, which provides for penalties including fines and imprisonment. Chorpagar's complaint includes copies of all official correspondence between NMC and the resident to establish the breach of permit terms. If a case is registered, the accused will be required to explain the deviation from the approved pruning, potentially setting a precedent for stricter enforcement against illegal tree cutting in urban areas, as per the NMC officials.

Now, Nagpur cops to unleash bulldozers on houses of drug lords

Nagpur: City Police Commissioner Ravinder Singal on Friday vowed to unleash bulldozers on illegal properties owned by drug lords as part of the intensified anti-narcotics campaign — Operation Thunder. This first of its kind plan against drug kingpins follows his earlier actions on March 17, when the house of the alleged Nagpur riots mastermind Fahim Khan was demolished, along with parts of unauthorized constructions linked to another rioter, Yusuf Shaikh. Top 50 members of drug cartels are on the police radar. While these demolitions were hailed in some quarters, the High Court labeled them as high-handed, prompting police to adopt a more cautious and legally sound approach in future. Singal has mobilized resources to identify and seize properties, assets, and wealth linked to drug lords involved in interstate narcotics networks. "We will proceed legally to raze illegal constructions and properties of drug lords to shatter their confidence," he said. Singal declared, emphasizing that police are working closely with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) to gather details of benami properties and unauthorized establishments. He added, "Their bank accounts will be frozen, and all assets will come under scrutiny." Operation Thunder, launched as a cornerstone of the Drug-Free Nagpur campaign, coincides with International Anti-Narcotics Week, observed from June 20 to 26. Nagpur Police's aggressive stance extends beyond property demolitions. Singal has taken a firm stand on vehicles used in drug trafficking , stating, "Vehicles facilitating the drug trade will remain in our custody as part of legal actions." The policy aims to disrupt the logistics of drug networks. Also, police have ramped up surveillance on transport systems, including buses and railways, leading to successful busts of Mumbai-based drug syndicates. Sources revealed that while police previously targeted properties of top gangsters in the city, delays from civic authorities hindered swift action. Singal urged citizens to report suspicious activities, assuring confidentiality. "Citizens are our eyes and ears," he said, crediting tip-offs for Operation Thunder's success. The top cop has also issued a stern warning to associates of drug lords, stating, "Friends, aides, and supporters sheltering these criminals will face strict action."
