WI vs AUS: Labuschagne dropped, Smith ruled out due to injury for first Test against West Indies

The Hindua day ago

Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped and injured Steve Smith has been ruled out of the Australia lineup for next week's series-opening Test against West Indies.
Cricket Australia on Friday said Smith would miss the opening match of the three-Test seies because of a finger injury sustained in the World Test Championship (WTC) final loss to South Africa last weekend at Lord's. He is expected to be fit for the second Test against West Indies.
Chief selector George Bailey said teenage opener Sam Konstas and wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis would replace Smith and Labuschagne.
He said Smith needed more time for a wound to heal and he'd be reassessed after another week.
'We have made the decision to give Josh and Sam the opportunity to replace Steve and Marnus,' Bailey said. 'We are excited to see them get the chance to further their fledgling Test careers.'
The 19-year-old Konstas has only played two Tests, bursting onto the scene with an almost run-a-ball 60 against India in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne last December.
The 30-year-old Inglis has played mostly short-form cricket for Australia, playing his only two Test matches to date in the series win in Sri Lanka in February, where he scored a century on debut.
'In his only opportunity in Test cricket to date, Josh was outstanding in Sri Lanka, showing great intent and ability to put pressure on the opposition,' Bailey said.
Labuschagne averages 46.19 in 104 Test innings, including 11 centuries and 23 half-centuries, but has struggled for form in recent series. He hasn't scored a Test hundred since the 2023 Ashes series in Manchester and hasn't scored above 26 in his most recent four Test matches. Moved up to open in the WTC final against South Africa, he got starts but was out for 17 and 22.
'Marnus at his best can be a really important member of this team. He understands his output hasn't been at the level we, or he, expects,' Bailey said. 'We will continue working with him on the areas of his game we feel he needs to rediscover.'
The batting order and starting XI will be determined closer to the start of the Test next Wednedsay.
The second Test is scheduled to start on July 3.

IND vs ENG: Shubman Gill's team shows it is ready to move on from Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma

India's captain Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant (AP Photo/Scott Heppell) How will India cope without Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli ? That was the overriding point of discussion in the entire build-up to the England Test series. The general consensus was that the Indian batting lineup lacked the experience to deal with English conditions, and that it would be entirely up to Jasprit Bumrah to keep Shubman Gill's team alive in the Test series. That may well happen even now, but what we saw on Friday on the first day of the first Test at Headingley was that things are probably far brighter than we thought it was. If we look back to the last two Test series against New Zealand at home and Australia away — which India lost 0-3 and 1-3 respectively — to subsequently miss out on a WTC final spot, we will see that the weak links in the batting lineup were Kohli and Rohit. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Against Australia, Kohli aggregated 190 in nine innings (including a 100 in the first Test). He managed 93 from six innings against New Zealand. Rohit's Australia aggregate was 31 off five innings, while against the Kiwis he scored 91 off six innings. With the No. 1 and No. 4 in such wretched form for such a long time, it meant that the onus was on the rest of the batters to deliver, and they often seemed to be buckling under all that pressure. Dominant India on Day 1! Jaiswal & Gill Hit Centuries | ENG vs IND 1st Test - Sahil from Leeds On Friday, it seemed India were suddenly free of the 'baggage', something captain Gill had hinted on Thursday on the eve of the Test match. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo The opening partnership of KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal showed the discipline that we haven't seen in recent times with Rohit around. The Mumbai right hander, towards the back-end of his Test career, had completely lost the trust in his defence and was always looking to hit out of trouble, which often proved counter-productive. That was precisely the thing that Jaiswal and Rahul didn't do on Friday, as they put on 91 runs for the first wicket. The duo was ready to wait and chose the right balls to hit, something that the Indian team sorely missed at the top of the order for a while. While Jaiswal and Rahul left enough evidence that we wouldn't be missing Rohit too much in this format, Gill at No. 4 showed that he was capable of picking up from where Kohli left off. Quiz: Who's that IPL player? Just as Kohli, 12 years ago, took over from Sachin Tendulkar in South Africa and did not allow India to feel the Little Master's absence, it was Gill's turn to bring that sense of assurance that the Indian middle-order has been so sorely lacking of late. Gill didn't try to be the compulsive front-foot player that made things slightly difficult for Virat towards the back end of his Test career. The new captain was ready to play late — a crucial old-school method of being successful in England — a rule book that had been discarded by Kohli after his struggles against James Anderson back in 2014. The entire story, though, hasn't been written yet. It's a long series and there will be ups and downs on the way. The onus is on Gill and his band of young warriors to prove that they are ready to take the battle forward for a new Indian team. Game On Season 1 kicks off with Sakshi Malik's inspiring story. Gavaskar takes U-turn from ‘Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!' Rishabh Pant meltdown, impressed with India star's batting vs ENG

Rishabh Pant has been under constant attention since making his India debut. The talented wicketkeeper-batter has received rave reviews when he has won matches for India single-handedly, but has also fallen victim to harsh criticism when he hasn't been able to take his side past the finish line. One such incident saw him on the receiving end of some harsh words from none other than, Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar. During a Test match against Australia, Pant was dismissed for 28 runs, after some poor shot selection and it left Gavaskar absolutely livid. Sunil Gavaskar was left impressed by Rishabh Pant's batting vs England. Speaking on ABP Sport radio, he said back then, 'Stupid! Stupid! Stupid! He should not be going into that (India's) dressing room - he should be going into the other dressing room!' The 'Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!' phrase went viral and even Pant recreated it in a viral video. But now Gavaskar has taken a U-turn from his previous harsh criticism of Pant, and was left in awe during the ongoing first Test match between India and England, in Leeds. On Day 1, Pant remained unbeaten after scoring 65* off 102 balls, and showed maturity, alongwith aggression. He took on Ben Stokes on just his second ball, slamming him for a four, straight down the ground. But after that, he showed maturity as he was cautious against Shoaib Bashir, registering only 16 off his next 44 balls. His approach left Gavaskar visibly impressed. Speaking on Sony Sports, he said, 'It seems like that's how he plays. When he comes in to bat, on the second or third ball, he often uses his feet and hits a boundary. It makes him feel free and then allows him to play the way he wants. Over here, he's been measured in his approach—giving himself time out in the middle. But once he's in and the bowlers start to tire, that's when he begins to step down the pitch and really attack, hitting big shots, sixes, and boundaries.' 'Because he gives himself that time early on, it becomes easier for him to play those aggressive strokes later. When he defends, he seems to have so much time against the pace bowlers—it almost looks like he's taking the mickey out of them, saying, "Look, I've got all the time in the world; I don't need to play a big shot, I'm just middling the ball. He's got enormous talent. I've seen him score hundreds in South Africa and Australia, and they've been absolutely unbelievable. There's such a great blend of defence and attack—starting with solid defence and then shifting to attack,' he further added. India reached 359/3 at Stumps, and Pant (65*) will resume batting with new captain Shubman Gill, who got a ton. Gill remained unbeaten at 127* off 175 deliveries.

'It is my desire, my will to do well': Jaiswal opens up on his mindset while batting

Leeds [UK], June 21 (ANI): Following his maiden ton in England on Friday, Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal opened up and revealed his mindset and temperament while batting in the middle during the game. The left-hand batter played an exceptional innings of 101 runs off 159 balls, laced with 16 boundaries and a maximum in his innings. Speaking on his mindset while batting, Jaiswal said in a video posted by BCCI, "It is my desire, my will to do well. Whenever I come here, these things stay in my mind. I want to do well for my team and my country. I enjoy practising alone and preparing. I keep trying that every ball that I play will help me in difficult situations. Further, the 23-year-old player spoke about the intra-squad game between India and India A which was played at Beckenham, Kent's second home venue, where he faced right-arm seamers Jasprit Bumrah and Harshit Rana. "There are many moments when we are under pressure. I enjoy the moments that I like. For example, we played in Beckenham. Rana was bowling very well. Bumrah was also bowling very well. I was not able to run, but I was playing well. That thing gave me so much confidence. It gives me so much belief that I will play well. I will take out that time. I enjoyed playing and it was good," the southpaw added. The young cricketer joined former Indian skipper, Saurav Ganguly (131 at Lord's, 1996), Vijay Manjrekar (133 at Leeds, 1952), Sandeep Patil (129* at Manchester, 1982) and Murali Vijay (146 at Nottingham, 2014) to score Test ton in their first Test innings on English soil. Jaiswal achieved this feat in his outing against England on Day 1 of the first test of the five-test match series on Friday at Leeds Headingley. This is also the start of the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle for both nations. Among players who have played at least five Tests and scored at least 500 runs against England, Jaiswal has the highest average. In six Tests, he has scored 813 runs across 10 innings at an average of 90.33, with three centuries and fifties each. He is the seventh Indian batter to score a century at Headingley. This century of Jaiswal is the fifth of his test career, and it is worth noting that none of his five tons have come against Asian nations. Notably, he has slammed a century on his maiden Test outings in Australia, the West Indies, and England. Three of his centuries have come against England, and one each against Australia and the West Indies. Jaiswal was dismissed by England skipper Ben Stokes right after Tea on Day 1 for 101 runs, his innings included 16 fours and a six. (ANI)
