Botafogo stun PSG 1-0 at Club World Cup

LOS ANGELES - Brazil's Botafogo stunned European champions Paris St Germain 1-0 on Thursday to throw Group B at the Club World Cup wide open.
PSG dominated possession at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena but Botafogo's defence stood tall to withstand waves of attacks from the French side in the first competitive meeting between the two clubs.
A turnover near midfield generated an opportunity for Igor Jesus, whose deflected shot left PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma flatfooted and only able to watch as the ball skipped into the net in the 36th minute.
PSG continued to be the aggressors in the second half as Botafogo were content to protect their lead and try to capitalize on the break.
PSG, who had scored 19 goals in their last five matches, had the ball in the net in the 79th minute but the goal was chalked off for offside and Botafogo held for the shock win. REUTERS

Returning from the break on 92-2, the pressure was on new India skipper Gill to shift the momentum back in India's favour, with their fans expecting a smooth transition following the retirements of stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Supported manfully by Jaiswal, who sailed to his sixth half century in 10 innings against England, Gill showed his class with his fastest-ever test 50, and, most crucially, first as captain. Convicted former Dutch international Promes extradited to Netherlands

A Dutch court last year sentenced the former Ajax Amsterdam and Spartak Moscow forward to six years in absentia for his direct involvement with two shipments of cocaine from Brazil through the port of Antwerp, Belgium, to the Netherlands in 2020. In 2023, Promes was also sentenced in absentia to 18 months in jail for assault in connection with a fight in 2020 in which he stabbed a cousin in the knee. Promes has denied all charges and has filed an appeal in both cases. The 33-year-old, who has 50 caps for the Netherlands, was arrested in Dubai in March last year, at the request of the Dutch public prosecution service when he was at a training camp with Spartak Moscow. He was later released from detention under restrictions, which included that he not be allowed to leave the United Arab Emirates. South Africa captain Bavuma ruled out of Zimbabwe test series

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma has been ruled out of the two-test series against Zimbabwe that starts in Bulawayo on June 28 after he failed to recover from a hamstring injury sustained in the World Test Championship final win over Australia at Lord's. Bavuma was injured in the second innings of South Africa's five-wicket victory, soldiering on as he scored a crucial 66 in a match-winning third wicket stand of 147 with centurion Aiden Markram. Keshav Maharaj will captain the side in Bavuma's absence, with no replacement named in the squad for the latter. The first test will be played from June 28-July 2 at the Queens Sports Club, with the second also in Bulawayo from July 6-10.
