Malaysia rugby raises import player quota to seven for 2025 Agong's Cup

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Rugby (MR) has decided to increase the number of import players allowed to compete in the 2025 Agong's Cup from four to seven players.
MR secretary-general Fahmy Abd Jalil said the decision was agreed upon during the union's annual general meeting (AGM) following requests from several affiliate members to increase the import player quota for the tournament.
"We have made a resolution to allow teams participating in the Agong's Cup to increase the number of import players. Previously, only four players were permitted, but for this edition, we have raised it to seven.
"This follows proposals from several affiliate members to increase the number of import players to make the tournament more competitive and provide teams with more player options," he told Bernama today.
Fahmy said MR has sent invitation letters to states to participate in the tournament, which is expected to kick off in mid-August.
Meanwhile, Fahmy said the AGM also discussed plans to revive the Malaysian Rugby League (MRL) in 2026.
"All affiliate members unanimously agreed to bring back the MRL in 2026. However, it will depend on financial allocations and budget," he said.
The MRL, introduced in 2004, features prominent national clubs such as Cobra, Keris Conlay, NS Wanderers, Eagles, Serdang Angels, Asas RFC and Bandaraya Dragons.
The league was last held in 2019. – BERNAMA

The Philippines women's rugby team, for example, have not played in any competitive matches since 2019, while Singapore is still in the process of building its 15s squad. Singapore Rugby council member Angelina Liu described the tournament as an important starting point for reviving the 15s format, which had long taken a back seat due to the dominance of 7s rugby. "With this tournament, girls who aren't suited to the 7s style now have a proper platform to grow and contribute to the sport's development in Southeast Asia," she said.

Bunga Raya sevens Sea Games squad wary of hosts Thailand

SEMENYIH: The men's national rugby sevens squad are on a mission to recapture the Sea Games gold medal in Bangkok in December but standing in their way will be a determined Thailand national side. Malaysia Rugby (MR) vice president Azmir Zanul Abdin said Thailand have spent the last two years preparing to win the gold on home soil and will be dangerous. "Our goal is to at least reach the final, this (target) is the same as it has been in previous editions," said Azmir today (June 18). "The tournament is expected to be tough this year. I think in previous years Thailand was not too serious about the competition. "But it is different as they are the hosts this time and they have been preparing for this over the last two years. "They are looking strong and have an advantage (on home ground) but that does not mean it is impossible for us to win gold. "Whether we can win gold or not depends on how well we can prepare ourselves from now until the games. "We will be competing in a number of test matches in the run up to the games and that will give us a good idea of our level." The Bunga Raya squad won the rugby sevens gold for the first time during the 2017 Kuala Lumpur Sea Games but settled for silver after finishing runners-up to hosts Philippines during the 2019 Hanoi edition. Rugby sevens has not been included at the Sea Games since then and is only making its comeback in Bangkok this December. Azmir was speaking after the sponsorship signing ceremony between Agym Nutrition Sdn Bhd and MR in Semenyih today. The two parties have signed a one-year contract with an option to extend up to three years which is potentially valued at RM1 million over three years. Under the agreement, Agym Nutrition, a homegrown Malaysian brand, will sponsor key nutritional supplements including whey protein, bulking supplements, branched chain amino acids and creatine, among others, to MR's competitive teams in both sevens and 15s formats.

Putrajaya, NS Can Pay Fine or Face Agong Cup Suspension

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Rugby (KRM) have given the Putrajaya and Negeri Sembilan teams the option of either paying a RM10,000 fine or being suspended from participating in the 2025 Agong Cup, following their withdrawal from last year's edition of the tournament. KRM Secretary-General Fahmy Abd Jalil said both teams were initially handed a one-year suspension from the Agong Cup tournament and a RM10,000 fine for the offence. He said the governing body made the decision yesterday after reviewing appeals from both teams for a reduction in penalties. 'Malaysia Rugby's Annual General Meeting (AGM) received the appeals from the Negeri Sembilan and Putrajaya squads,' he told Bernama yesterday. Fahmy said KRM have already sent out invitation letters to the states to participate in the 2025 Agong Cup, which is expected to begin in mid-August.
