Malaysia's most anticipated superhero action movie, 'Keluang Man', is set to take over cinemas nationwide starting 29th May 2025! Produced by Astro Shaw, 'Keluang Man' marks the inception of the Astro Shaw Cinematic Universe. As part of the larger promotional campaign leading up to the highly anticipated superhero film, Astro Shaw teamed up with key partners to roll out a series of exciting collaborations.
These collabs included the Wonda Kopi Kluang limited-edition collection with Wonda Coffee, the Wonda-ful 'Keluang Man' Burger in partnership with myBurgerLab, the exclusive 'Keluang Man' Premium Collection by Royal Selangor, and of course, the highlight—the 'Keluang Man' WONDA Fun Run. To build anticipation for the highly awaited live-action release of 'Keluang Man', Astro Shaw has launched an exhilarating, immersive experience with the 'Keluang Man WONDA Fun Run'—Malaysia's first-ever original superhero-themed run. This milestone event marked a groundbreaking collaboration between Keluang Man, Wonda Coffee, and Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL), held in conjunction with the city's Car Free Morning programme. The run, making its debut on 18th May in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, drew more than 7,000 enthusiastic participants of all ages for a vibrant 5km course that began at Menara DBKL.
The morning of event kicked off at 6:45 am with a dynamic warm-up session, followed by the official flag-off at 7:00 am, led by none other than Keluang Man himself, mascot BeBe, and a DBKL representative. Adding a fun twist, runners donned Keluang Man masks, while select lucky participants received limited-edition jerseys that added a collectable thrill to the experience.
Elevating the atmosphere, fans were treated to star appearances by the film's cast, including Nas Muammar Zar, Datuk Rosyam Nor, Shweta Sekhon, Anwaar Beg Moghal, Sham Sunder, and Razzuan Rosli. The energy soared further with live performances from Krisya, the vocalist of the film's official theme song, and local rock powerhouse S.O.G.
The 'Keluang Man WONDA Fun Run' successfully united fans, fitness enthusiasts, and film lovers in a celebration of homegrown superhero pride, setting the stage for what promises to be an epic cinematic launch. Astro's 1Q profit falls 21% on lower subscription and ad revenue
ASTRO Malaysia Holdings Bhd saw its net profit decline to RM13.48 million for the first quarter ended April 30, 2025 (1Q25), from RM17.01 million a year earlier, dragged by weaker television subscription and advertising income. Revenue for the quarter slipped to RM703.09 million, down 9% from RM772.53 million in the same period last year, the pay-TV operator said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia today. The group attributed the revenue decline to a 6% drop in television subscription revenue and a 13% fall in advertising revenue. Despite the softer top line, Astro said engagement on its platform remained robust, with customers spending 82% of their viewing time on local content, up three percentage points quarter-on-quarter. 'We produce 10,000 hours of new content annually to satisfy this demand, ranging from well-known signatures and dramas to thought-provoking Astro Originals, animation and movies,' it said. The group is also expanding efforts to monetise its intellectual properties (IPs) across multiple platforms — including cinemas, streaming, digital, licensing, advertising, and live experiences — to optimise content returns. However, Astro said content piracy remains its biggest threat and stressed it is continuing efforts to combat illegal streaming. It noted that courts across Malaysia had recently ruled in its favour in a number of piracy-related cases, awarding statutory damages and tougher penalties against illegal streaming device (ISD) sellers and F&B operators streaming its content without permission. 'We will continue to lobby for further regulatory reform and enforcement activity, not just to protect Astro, but to safeguard the future of the Malaysian creative industry,' it said. The crime-fighting, almost mentally deranged Malaysian superhero, 'Keluang Man', has piqued nationwide interest with its all-out marketing, playing into the hype of superhero movies such as Thunderbolts and Superman. The idea of mixing Batman into a Malaysian concoction of a superhero could very well be a recipe for success, but would it reflect on the box office stats? With three weeks in, Astro Shaw's 'Keluang Man' had reportedly collected a RM2.4 million gross in the last 18 days of showing. The chart prepared by FINAS lines up the list of Malaysian movies, including the likes of 'Ejen Ali The Movie 2: Misi Satria' and 'Gayong'. According to reports, the production and marketing costs of the film amounted to RM13 million. Despite being under the Compulsory Screen Scheme and produced by a mega film company, Astro Shaw, the performance of the movie proved to be far from expectations. Reports also state that the movie had only attracted up to 141,000 viewers since its premiere on 29th May 2025. Astro Shaw Head, Raja Jastina Raja Arshad, explains that despite its low viewership, the main focus of the movie is not solely to collect figures but is about paving a new direction for Malaysian films. 'For us, this project is an effort to open a new path for local superhero films. 'Keluang Man' is not just a collection, but about a new direction', he adds. Netizens were more than quick to chime in on why the reception was low, linking it to unsuitable premiere dates and lack of interest from younger generations.
