‘Adolescence' is second most watched English-language series in Netflix history

PARIS : Who would have guessed that a dramatic miniseries about adolescents in distress would be able to compete with the giants of the Netflix catalogue?
And yet, 'Adolescence,' launched in March 2025, has just reached an impressive milestone with 141.2 million views, according to the latest rankings released by Netflix.
This figure puts it ahead of season 4 of 'Stranger Things' (140.7 million), an unexpected achievement for a production that is far removed from the conventions of the fantasies or thrillers that tend to tally up the most users.
The miniseries had already zoomed to renown in April by climbing to ninth place in the ranking of the most popular English-language series of all time on Netflix, surpassing the performance of the third season of 'Stranger Things.'
This momentum shows no signs of slowing down, as 'Adolescence' has even surpassed the ratings of the fourth season of the series starring Millie Bobby Brown. To date, season 4 of 'Stranger Things' has accumulated 140.7 million views, a threshold now surpassed by the drama miniseries.
'We're overwhelmed for you to embrace us the way you have,' said Stephen Graham during Gotham TV Awards à New York, after the miniseries picked up three prizes.
'This was a small, colloquial piece that was made with love, respect, humility and dignity, and we treated the subject with … care and conviction.'
The miniseries could also garner several nominations at the upcoming Emmy Awards, which are set to be announced on July 15.
Co-produced by Plan B, the company co-founded by Brad Pitt, 'Adolescence' follows the story of a 13-year-old boy arrested for the brutal murder of a classmate. Behind this fictional story, however, the co-creator has said that he was inspired by several real-life tragic cases in the United Kingdom:
'Where it came from, for me, is there was an incident in Liverpool, a young girl, and she was stabbed to death by a young boy. I just thought, why?' explained Graham to Radio Times.
'Then there was another young girl in south London who was stabbed to death at a bus stop.
'And there was this thing up North, where that young girl Brianna Ghey was lured into the park by two teenagers, and they stabbed her. I just thought, what's going on? What is this that's happening?'
In first place, the first season of the series 'Wednesday' starring Jenna Ortega maintains its lead with 252.1 million views, topping the list of the most-watched English-language series on Netflix.

US singer Chris Brown pleads not guilty in UK nightclub assault case, trial set for 2026
LONDON, June 20 — American R&B singer Chris Brown today pleaded not guilty in a UK court to a charge stemming from an alleged London nightclub brawl in 2023. Brown, 36, wearing a dark suit and tie as well as glasses, stood in the dock in London as the charge was put to him, replying: 'Not guilty, ma'am.' The singer, who is on £5 million (RM28.4 million) bail, waved to people in the public gallery as he left, following his plea to allegedly attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent. A five to seven-day long trial was scheduled to start on October 26, 2026. The singer was held in custody for a nearly a week in May after he was arrested in the northwestern city of Manchester. He was later released on bail. Under the terms of his bail, he will forfeit the £5 million guarantee if he fails to return for court proceedings. He was also given the go-ahead to continue his scheduled international tour which began on June 8 in Amsterdam. The star, who had a troubled relationship with Barbadian singer Rihanna, is on the UK leg of his tour, with his next date in London tomorrow. Brown is charged with attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent in relation to an assault in which the victim was allegedly struck several times with a bottle before being pursued, punched and kicked. The alleged incident took place at a nightclub in Hanover Square in London on February 19, 2023 while Brown was touring in the UK. Grammy winner Police detained him in the early hours of May 13 at a five-star hotel in Manchester after he reportedly flew in by private jet. Other bail terms include that he should surrender his passport if he is not travelling. He is also required to live at a specific address known to the court and is not permitted to visit the nightclub were the alleged assault took place or contact the alleged victim, Abraham Diah. He appeared in the dock with co-defendant Omololu Akinlolu, a US national, with whom he is jointly charged. Akinlolu also entered a not guilty plea to the same charge of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent. Both men are also jointly charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm. They will enter pleas to that charge on July 11, the court was told. Brown also faces a third charge of having an offensive weapon, a bottle, in public. He rose from a local church choir in Virginia to sudden fame with his rich R&B voice and later rap, but his reputation has been tarnished by the allegations of abuse.
