Look: UAE Residents Capture Rare 22° Halo Around Sun; Did You See It Too?

On Saturday afternoon, UAE's skies were lit up by a breathtaking celestial display — a rare 22°C halo.
The stunning solar halo formed a perfect, luminous ring around the sun, creating a magical scene that left onlookers in awe. According to Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Board of Directors at the Emirates Astronomical Society, the optical phenomenon occurs when sunlight refracts through ice crystals in high, thin clouds like cirrus clouds.
One of those lucky enough to capture the spectacle was Ralph Emerson B. De Peralta, a 51-year-old engineer and long-time UAE resident. While Ibrahim spotted the phenomenon in Sharjah, Ralph did so from Abu Dhabi.
'Yesterday, while I was inside my room, I happened to glance outside my window and noticed a distinct, glowing ring around the sun,' De Peralta shared. 'Recognising it immediately as a sun halo — a rare sight especially in the UAE — I quickly grabbed my camera and rushed outside, even though it was already around 1pm and extremely hot.'
Using a pathway lined with large trees as a natural frame, he managed to snap stunning photographs of the phenomenon.

When asked how he instantly recognised the halo, De Peralta said, 'I've always been fascinated by sky phenomena like the stars, the Milky Way, the moon, and the sun. My wife even jokes that I should have been an astrophysicist!'

How does a sun halo occur?
Sun halos are caused by sunlight passing through millions of tiny ice crystals in high cirrostratus clouds. These hexagonal ice crystals form these clouds. So, when sunlight gets refracted through those ice crystals a circular ring of light is created around the Sun.
The angle — 22° — is the angular radius of the corona we see around the Sun, not the angle of refraction of the light.
This phenomenon could also be an indication of changes in weather conditions, like an approaching low pressure system.
Is it related to the recent sun storm?
Khadija Al Hariri, operations manager at the Dubai Astronomy Group, explained that sun halos are unrelated to recent solar storms.
'Sun halos are caused by ice crystals in Earth's atmosphere bending sunlight. Solar storms are caused by activity on the sun — like solar flares and coronal mass ejections — that send charged particles toward Earth, potentially affecting satellites, power grids, and creating auroras,' she explained.
'This phenomenon is rare in the UAE because it's usually too hot and dry for the high-altitude ice crystals needed to form a sun halo,' she said. 'It doesn't have any direct impact on the sun or space activity — it's purely a local atmospheric observation.'
Ralph mentioned that he last saw the sun halo about two years ago when he was walking around the Al Maryah Island.
Aside from UAE, the rare phenomenon also graced the skies of Aseer in Saudi Arabia on Saturday morning.

Eager to witness a rare Strawberry Moon – the last full Moon of Spring 2025 – which won't appear this low in the sky again until 2043? Your wait ends tomorrow, June 11, as it has been confirmed that the celestial treat will be visible in the UAE. 'The Strawberry Moon will be visible in the UAE, with moonrise at approximately 7.32pm on June 11 and moonset at 5.55am on June 12,' Khadijah Hasan Ahmed, operations manager at the Dubai Astronomy Group (DAG), told Gulf News on Tuesday. The Strawberry Moon will be visible across the UAE, she confirmed. 'And the best part is that you don't need any special equipment to see it.' Residents can simply step outside and look toward the eastern horizon shortly after moonrise, which is at 7.32pm, as the Strawberry Moon will be visible to the naked eye under clear skies. The best views are from open areas like beaches, deserts, or high spots, but it can still be seen from the city if you have a clear view of the eastern horizon, explained Khadijah. 'Of course, using binoculars or telescopes would definitely enhance the view.' She pointed out that it is 'a beautiful, easy-to-watch celestial event that connects us with the universe because the Strawberry Moon is the last full Moon of Spring and one of the most visually striking, often appearing larger and more golden when it rises.' Despite its name, however, the Strawberry Moon will not look pink or red. It is usually yellow or orange due to atmospheric conditions when it is low on the horizon. The twist about this Full Strawberry Moon that will grace the night sky on June 11 is that it is accompanied by the rare phenomenon of a Great Lunar Standstill, which happens every 18.6 years. 'In the Northern Hemisphere, it will be the lowest Full Moon until 2043, staying unusually close to the horizon. Conversely, in the Southern Hemisphere, it will be the highest Full Moon until 2043,' as explained on astronomy app Star Walk 2, said Khadijah. 'This rare positioning is due to the major lunar standstill, which is a cycle that only happens every 18.6 years. It's like the Moon's version of a solstice.' So, it will be the lowest Full Moon in 18.6 years for the Northern Hemisphere, rising and setting at its most extreme south-easterly and south-westerly points. Meanwhile, in the Southern Hemisphere, it is the opposite: they will see the highest Full Moon this month, and their lowest one will come in December, she explained. The Moon's orbit is tilted about 5.1° relative to the Earth's path around the Sun (the ecliptic), Khadijah pointed out. Because the Earth's axis is also tilted 23.4°, during a major standstill, these tilts combine, so the Moon can rise and set at its most extreme points on the horizon, farther north and farther south than usual. Hence, the Moon also appears higher or lower in the sky than normal.

AFP | Paris Astronomers announced yesterday they have discovered a massive planet orbiting a tiny star, a bizarre pairing that has stumped scientists. Most of the stars across the Milky Way are small red dwarfs like TOI-6894, which has only 20 percent the mass of our Sun. It had not been thought possible that such puny, weak stars could provide the conditions needed to form and host huge planets. But an international team of astronomers have detected the unmistakable signature of a gas giant planet orbiting the undersized TOI-6894, according to a study in the journal Nature Astronomy. This makes the star the smallest star yet known to host a gas giant. The planet has a slightly larger radius than Saturn, but only half its mass. It orbits its star in a little over three days. The astronomers discovered the planet when searching through more than 91,000 low-mass red dwarfs observed by NASA's TESS space telescope. Its existence was then confirmed by ground-based telescopes, including Chile's Very Large Telescope. 'The fact that this star hosts a giant planet has big implications for the total number of giant planets we estimate exist in our galaxy,' study co-author Daniel Bayliss of the UK's Warwick University said in a statement. Another co-author, Vincent Van Eylen, of University College London, said it was an 'intriguing discovery'. 'We don't really understand how a star with so little mass can form such a massive planet!' he said. 'This is one of the goals of the search for more exoplanets. By finding planetary systems different from our solar system, we can test our models and better understand how our own solar system formed.'

Members of the Oman Society for Astronomy and Space (OSAS) observed one of the largest sunspots to appear on the sun's surface during the 25th solar cycle, known as Sunspot 4079. The sunspot's size exceeded 11 times the size of planet Earth. Observers were able to clearly photograph this spot from the skies over Muscat Governorate using specialised astronomical equipment, in a rare scene that reflects the peak of solar activity currently being experienced by the sun. Wesal bint Salem Al Hinai, Vice Chair of the Community Engagement Committee at the OSAS, said: 'Sunspot 4079 is one of the largest phenomena we have observed during the current solar cycle. Photographing it from the Sultanate of Oman is a scientific and astronomical achievement that highlights the OSAS's efforts to monitor cosmic phenomena that directly impact Earth. This requires community awareness of the risks of space weather and its potential impact on communications, navigation, and energy systems.' She added: 'Sunspots are one of the most prominent phenomena associated with the Sun's magnetic activity. They represent a crucial indicator in understanding the behavior of our solar system's star and its multiple effects on Earth. The Sun undergoes regular cycles of magnetic activity known as 'solar cycles,' each lasting an average of about 11 years. During these cycles, the Sun's surface undergoes significant changes in the number of sunspots, the intensity of flares, and coronal mass ejections, which directly impact space weather and the geomagnetic environment surrounding Earth.' Sunspots are the most visible manifestation of this cycle, increasing in frequency as solar activity increases and decreasing toward the end of the cycle. Currently, the Sun is experiencing the peak of the 25th solar cycle, which began in December 2019. This is a phase of intense magnetic disturbance during which the number of sunspots is markedly increased. A daily average of about 215.5 sunspots was recorded in August 2024, the highest in more than two decades, indicating that the 25th solar cycle may have peaked earlier than expected. In late February In 2025, the sun erupted a powerful solar flare, detected by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory. These flares are classified as Class X flares, the most intense. This event was followed by a coronal mass ejection, which triggered a geomagnetic storm that reached Earth in April 2025, causing auroras across large areas of mid-latitudes and partially impacting high-frequency radio communications systems. In May 2025, the sun showed another unprecedented surge of activity, with the number of sunspots exceeding previous predictions, indicating a peak that may be the strongest in decades. This activity is accompanied by powerful solar flares and coronal mass ejections, potentially leading to geomagnetic storms that could impact Earth. This cycle is expected to continue until 2030, with solar activity gradually declining after the peak. One of the most prominent historical phenomena associated with extreme solar activity is the Carrington Effect, the most powerful solar storm documented in modern times. It occurred in 1859. On September 1 of that year, British astronomer Richard Carrington observed a powerful solar flare emanating from a massive sunspot. Within 24 hours, high-energy solar particles reached Earth, causing a widespread magnetic storm. Auroras were observed in unusual locations, such as the Caribbean, and its effects were even felt in Hong Kong and Rome. The storm also disrupted telegraph networks and caused fires due to electrical sparks. This event serves as an early warning of the potential dangers of solar storms in an age of heavy reliance on technology, such as satellites, electricity grids, and communications.
