#TECH: Flagship features in affordable package
IF you've ever wondered whether a smartphone could keep up with your fast-paced life, all while delivering great performance and premium features, the new realme GT 7 might just be your answer.
Billed as the 2025 'Flagship Killer', this device has some worthy features. I've been testing the GT 7 Dream Edition for over a week, taking it through its paces in various conditions.
Going the distance
Let's start with what matters most to power users: battery life. The GT 7 houses a massive 7,000mAh Titan battery, and yes, it performs well. On a typical day involving social media, photography, navigation, and streaming, I ended the day with more than 30 per cent left in the tank.
On of the things I like about the phone is its 120W Ultra Charge feature. Plug it in for just 14 minutes and I could get at least 50 per cent charge.
So what about a full charge? The phone basically did it in about 40 minutes. You could have your phone fully-charged while sipping a cuppa at a coffee outlet.
Realme also introduces a Smart Bypass feature keeps things cool and helps prolong battery lifespan, which is a welcome addition for long-term reliability.
Photography performance
As someone who regularly uses a phone camera for work and leisure, I was especially keen to see how the Sony IMX906-powered AI Travel Snap Camera, used by this phione, performs.
I managed to take some shots in Penang recently during my weekend getaway.
Daytime shots are crisp and detailed, with rich colours and good dynamic range. The AI clearly does its job in enhancing scenes without overprocessing.
On low-light performance, which is complicated for many phones and event camera, the GT 7 surprised me. Noise is well controlled, and the AI glare removal is particularly helpful when shooting near artificial lights.
For portraits, the depth mapping is accurate, and subject separation is sharp. Skin tones are natural, and background bokeh is pleasantly soft.
Meanwhile, landscape photography benefits from the camera's wide dynamic range and clarity. Whether it's greenery under the afternoon sun or twilight cityscapes, results were consistently good.
Besides that, the phone also has a feature that is the 4K Underwater Mode.
On video, thanks to Dolby Vision support and the ability to record cinematic 4K video at up to 120fps.
Design and look
The realme GT 7 Dream Editiob is a looker, especially with the Aston Martin Formula One Team touch. Finished in Aston Martin Racing Green, with aerodynamic flow lines and a Silver Wing emblem, the phone is a tribute to British engineering and racing heritage. The exclusive box set includes a custom phone case and even an F1-inspired SIM pin, a thoughtful nod to fans of speed and luxury.
The IceSense Graphene back panel not only aids in heat management, but also offers a cool-to-the-touch sensation that's unlike most phones I've used. It's comfortable, sleek, and modern.
Its 6.78-inch Amoled Pro-Esports Display is vibrant and extremely bright, 6,000 nits peak, to be exact. Even under harsh sunlight, visibility is excellent. The display is fluid, responsive, and ideal for gaming or content consumption.
And with IP69 dust and water resistance, this phone feels ready for anything, whether it's a beach day, rain-soaked commute, or rough-handling at work.
Performance
Under the hood is the MediaTek Dimensity 9400e chipset, and it's as fast as you'd expect from a flagship. Apps launch quickly, multitasking is seamless, and games run without hiccups.
But what really sets the GT 7 apart is its AI integration. The AI Planner is a standout tool, letting you create and manage tasks with a double-tap. Over time, it learns your habits and helps streamline your day. It's like having a built-in PA.
The phone also features Gemini AI, enabling tools like AI Eraser 2.0, AI Translator, and AI Tools 2.0 — handy for real-time communication, advanced editing, and content generation.

Cognizant to invest $183 million for new India campus, add 8,000 jobs

Globally, IT companies, including those in India's $283 billion sector, are taking cost-cutting measures such as monetising real estate assets and delaying wage increases amid demand uncertainty. Last month, the Teaneck, New Jersey-based company raised its annual revenue forecast and beat first-quarter results driven by increased demand for AI-powered IT services. Cognizant expects 2025 annual revenue between $20.5 billion and $21.0 billion, compared to previous outlook of the midpoint of $20.30 billion to $20.80 billion. Turkish competition authority launches probe into Google's PMAX
ISTANBUL (Reuters) -Turkey's antitrust authority will launch a probe into Google's Performance Max (PMAX) to determine if the AI-powered ad campaign product violates competition laws, it said on Friday. In a statement, the competition board said the probe will examine whether Google has engaged in unfair practices against advertisers and if it has hindered competition through data consolidation with PMAX. Google's Performance Max uses AI and automatically finds the best placements for a brand's ads across Google services including email, search and YouTube. DC outlook intact for now

PETALING JAYA: There is a possibility that the firms involved in the alleged breach involving Nvidia-powered artificial intelligence (AI) chips may face US sanctions, but such measures are unlikely to be applied to Malaysia, says Sunway University economics professor Dr Yeah Kim Leng. Yeah said this is given that many existing data centres (DCs) and those in the pipeline are US-based companies. 'Nvidia, a US company, is seeking new markets to offset its loss of China's market as the Chinese government has banned the use of its chips. 'China is accelerating development of home-grown AI chips, thereby offering an alternative supply unless companies that use them are also sanctioned by the United States,' he told StarBiz. Yeah opined that despite the uncertainties caused by the technological rivalry between China and the United States, the outlook for DCs in Malaysia remained positive given the rising local and global demand for cloud and AI services. 'Malaysia will also benefit from the global firms' diversification of DCs that leveraged on each country's growth opportunities and cost advantages such as availability of cheap energy, land and skilled manpower resources,' he said. According to a Wall Street Journal article, Chinese engineers reportedly flew to Malaysia in March with suitcases full of hard drives containing around 80 terabytes of data to train AI models at local DCs equipped with advanced Nvidia chips. In addressing the alleged breach, the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti) said, in a statement on Wednesday, it is in the process of verifying the matter with relevant agencies. It reiterated that servers using Nvidia chips and AI chips are not classified as controlled goods under the Malaysian Strategic Trade Act 2010. 'Malaysia will cooperate with any government that requires assistance in monitoring trade in sensitive goods under the export control of their respective countries,' it said. Given that the allegations were made in March, MIDF Research said it could be a move to 'speed up the process', before the eventually rescinded AI Diffusion Framework that was expected to come into force on May 15. The research house is of the view that the pipeline of DC jobs in Malaysia is unlikely to be impacted by the alleged breach. It noted there is no slowdown or delay in ongoing projects and contractors are actively bidding for new DC construction jobs. 'Just last month, Gamuda Bhd sold 389 acres of land in Port Dickson to Google-linked Pearl Computing Malaysia Sdn Bhd and signed a RM1.01bil external infrastructure contract for enabling works for DC development, while Sunway Construction Group Bhd secured a RM1.16bil contract from a US tech giant to build two DCs,' MIDF Research said in a report yesterday. Microsoft recently reaffirmed its commitment to a RM10.5bil investment in cloud and AI infrastructure in Malaysia, including the development of hyperscale DCs in the Klang Valley. 'We also reiterate that not all DCs are AI DCs and while most of them are AI-ready, they may eventually be utilised for non-AI purposes,' MIDF Research said. It cited the example of YTL Power International Bhd which previously allocated 100MW for AI from its 500MW DC in Kulai, Johor. iFAST Capital research analyst Kevin Khaw Khai Sheng said the long-term prospects of the country's DC sector remains 'quite intact'. 'Ultimately, Malaysia continues to benefit from several competitive advantages –such as abundant water resources for cooling, land, skilled labour and a relatively weak ringgit, which makes the country cost-effective,' he said. Khaw added that, due to Singapore's limited access to such resources, he expected closer collaboration between Malaysia and the city-state. Asked if the alleged breach would affect ongoing tariff negotiations between Malaysia and the United States, Khaw said it would unlikely be a decisive factor given that the country is already negotiating from a weaker footing. 'The alleged breach may add a bit more pressure to our position in negotiations. But ultimately, it depends on how our government handles the situation and works toward securing the best possible outcome. 'From the United States' perspective, Malaysia is not their major competitor. It is actively trying to diversify its supply chain risks – especially in light of tensions with China – and is looking for more allies and partnerships with other countries. Given Malaysia's 'neutral' stance and our geographical advantages, we could still be seen as a potential partner for the United States,' he said. Khaw said the construction sector's outlook remained optimistic with the order book environment set to improve heading into the second half of 2025.
