Observer04-06-2025

Muscat:
As Eid Al Adha holidays begins in Oman tomorrow, residents and visitors are gearing up for a well-deserved break. Oman has announced a four-day holiday, including the weekend, providing an excellent opportunity for short getaways. But with temperatures soaring above 46°C in several regions, many are turning to nature's own remedy—Oman's wadis—to escape the heat.
These freshwater wadis, scattered across the Sultanate, offer lush palm groves, dramatic cliffs, and most importantly—cool, flowing water. Whether you're seeking adventure or serenity, here's a curated list of some of the best wadis to visit this summer holiday, ranging from popular tourist spots to hidden gems.
1. Wadi Shab – The Icon of Natural Beauty
Location: Tiwi, Ash Sharqiyah South
Highlights: Clear turquoise pools, hidden cave waterfall, hiking trails
One of Oman's most iconic wadis, Wadi Shab is a favourite among locals and tourists alike. After a short boat ride and a scenic hike through dramatic gorges, visitors are rewarded with emerald pools and a secret cave waterfall. Go early in the morning to avoid the midday heat and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere.
2. Wadi Bani Khalid – The Family Favourite
Location: Ash Sharqiyah North
Highlights: Easy access, shaded date palms, large swimming pools
Perfect for families, Wadi Bani Khalid offers accessibility without compromising on natural beauty. With year-round flowing water and picnic spots under date palms, it's ideal for a relaxed day out. However, expect some crowd during the holidays.
3. Wadi Al Arbeieen – The Untamed Beauty
Location: Qurayyat, Muscat Governorate
Highlights: Deep pools, towering cliffs, 4x4 access
A more rugged and remote option, Wadi Al Arbeieen is known for its dramatic scenery and deep freshwater pools. It's best suited for those with a 4WD vehicle and an adventurous spirit. Less crowded than the bigger wadis, it offers a peaceful escape surrounded by soaring mountains.
4. Wadi Darbat – A Green Paradise in Dhofar
Location: Salalah, Dhofar Governorate
Highlights: Waterfalls (seasonal), lush vegetation, boating
Though better known during the Khareef (monsoon) season, Wadi Darbat still retains its charm in early summer, especially after spring rains. Visitors may enjoy light boating and spotting wildlife in this lush wadi. A great pick if you're heading south for a cooler Eid holiday.
5. Wadi Tiwi – The Twin to Wadi Shab
Location: Near Sur, Ash Sharqiyah South
Highlights: Villages along the cliffs, natural springs
Often overshadowed by its neighbour Wadi Shab, Wadi Tiwi deserves attention for its unique setting—narrow roads weave through villages perched on cliff sides. A wonderful mix of culture and nature, with several swimming spots along the way.

.
Wadi Damm – The Hidden Jewel
Location: Near Bahla, Ad Dakhiliyah Governorate
Highlights: Rock formations, calm pools, ideal for a peaceful retreat
Tucked away in the interior, Wadi Damm is perfect for those wanting to avoid the crowds. Known for its unusual rock formations and calm waterholes, it's a great spot for reflection and relaxation. Bring plenty of water and sun protection, as shaded areas are limited.
7. Wadi Al Hoqain – The Photographer's Dream
Location: Al Batinah South
Highlights: Waterfalls, palm-lined paths, historic falaj systems
With scenic waterfalls and traditional irrigation systems, Wadi Al Hoqain is not only refreshing but also photogenic. It's accessible for all vehicles, making it an excellent option for a half-day trip.
Tips for Visiting Wadis This Summer
Start early: Avoid peak heat hours by heading out at dawn.
Bring water and snacks: Most wadis are in remote areas with limited facilities.
Respect nature: Take all waste with you and avoid loud music.
Safety first: Avoid swimming in fast currents and check weather forecasts in case of flash floods.

Summer travel plans disrupted due to regional unrest

Muscat, June 15 As tensions in the region escalate, travel plans are being revisited. Iran has been a popular destination for medical and leisure tourism, as northern Iran is known for its exceptional weather during the summer. However, tourists who went for Eid holidays are now rushing to find ways to return. The route back will likely be by road or sea. Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al Busaidy, Foreign Minister, reiterated the round-the-clock efforts to facilitate the evacuation of Omani citizens wishing to return to their homeland. He noted that the Foreign Ministry has allocated direct contact numbers in Muscat and Tehran based on the geographical distribution of citizens, in addition to the possibility of communicating via the ministry's app and other social media tools. The ministry urged all Omani citizens who are currently in Shiraz and nearby areas to gather at specified locations in the Islamic Republic of Iran, namely assembly points in Shiraz and Bandar Abbas to facilitate procedures to ensure everyone's safety and return to Oman. "My parents are still in Iran. They have been there since the Eid holidays. They have already been contacted by the ministry, but they are in Mashhad, Iran, which is up north. We are not sure when they will be able to plan their journey back," said a concerned daughter. Some citizens conveyed through social media that they are still stuck in Baku, Azerbaijan. The summer holidays have begun for some sections of the school students, and amidst summer holiday planning comes the current situation in the region that has prompted airspace closures, resulting in the cancellation of some popular destinations for Omani tourists. Issa al Harthy, Sunny Island Travel and Tours, told the Observer: "Once the current conflict is over, the situation will return to normal, but there will be cancellations to the northern hemisphere and Central Asia." "Many Omanis might not be in the mood to travel under the circumstances. People usually like to travel to Iran for medical treatment and for religious visits, but now that is not possible," he added. When asked if there had been cancellations yet, he replied, "We have not sold many tickets to Central Asia; it is important to wait and see. Many Omanis also like to travel to the Far East and Africa. We have the optimism that after the dust has settled down, Omanis and residents will resume travelling. And we might see last-minute decisions to travel." Nizam Aniyaram, B - One Travels, said, "We have had destination bookings to Central Asia, with Georgia being popular, but connecting flights have been cancelled. So our travellers have had to make changes. As of now, we think it is a temporary situation." Salam Air had announced a temporary suspension of flights from/to Iran and Iraq. The destinations that have been impacted are Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Russia, Armenia, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan. Airlines in the UAE have also mentioned that some other flights may face delays or rerouting. Passengers are advised to check the flight status of the respective airlines.

Summer travel plans disrupted amid regional tensions

Muscat: As regional tensions escalate, many holidaymakers have been forced to alter or cancel their travel plans. Iran, traditionally a popular destination for both medical and leisure tourism—particularly the cooler northern regions during summer—has seen a significant shift in tourist movements. Travellers who spent the Eid holidays there are now urgently seeking alternative routes to return home, most likely by road or sea. Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al Busaidy, Foreign Minister, reaffirmed that the Sultanate of Oman is making round-the-clock efforts to facilitate the evacuation of Omani citizens wishing to return. He stated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has designated direct contact numbers in both Muscat and Tehran, organised according to citizens' geographical locations. In addition, citizens can communicate via the Ministry's official mobile app and other digital platforms. The Ministry has called on all Omani nationals currently in Shiraz and surrounding areas to gather at designated assembly points in Shiraz and Bandar Abbas. These locations have been specified to ensure the safety and orderly return of citizens to the Sultanate of Oman. Oman Air has announced cancellation of flights to Amman, Jordan.
