Anger at WSU as students protest bail for residence manager accused of murder

Three students from Walter Sisulu University (WSU) were arrested on Wednesday after a protest over the court-ordered release of a residence manager accused of murder.
The protest turned violent at the institution's Mthatha main campus after news emerged residence manager Manelisi Mampane was granted a R10,000 bail by the Mthatha Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
Mampane is accused of fatally shooting student Sisonke Mbolekwa during a protest in April this year.
Videos circulating on social media showed some students throwing stones at police officers who responded to the scene.
IOL News previously reported that Mampane is facing charges of murder and two counts of attempted murder after two other students were also injured in the incident.
Eastern Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana confirmed the arrests and acknowledged the deep frustration in the university community following the court's decision.
'We recognise the profound distress this case has caused within the university community,' Gantana said.
'SAPS affirms the constitutional right to peaceful protest under Section 17 but emphasises our mandate to ensure public safety, protect infrastructure, and uphold the rule of law without interfering in judicial independence.'
Gantana said the court determined Mampane's release under standard legal procedures, and that police have no authority over judicial decisions.
She added that the murder investigation remains active, prioritised, and ongoing in collaboration with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
She condemned acts of vandalism, arson, intimidation, and road blockades during the protest.
'Such criminal conduct diverts critical resources from the investigation and undermines the pursuit of justice,' she said.
'Public order units remain deployed to facilitate peaceful dissent while safeguarding lives and property.'
She said the three students are expected to face charges of public violence, damage to infrastructure, and damage to property.
Police confiscated wheelbarrows and sponge mattresses used by protesters.
Meanwhile, education activist Hendrick Makaneta also condemned the violent nature of the protest.
'These acts are not only unlawful but dangerously irresponsible,' Makaneta said.
'They put innocent lives at risk and disrupt the daily lives and livelihoods of ordinary South Africans.'

Duduzile claps back at Floyd Shivambu's 'takes drugs' comments
Duduzile Zuma-Samudla has finally responded to shady comments made by fellow MK Party MP, Floyd Shivambu. In a press briefing on Thursday, 19 June, the former secretary general accused his party nemesis of 'taking drugs'. Floyd was effectively demoted after the party condemned his visit to the wanted Malawian preacher, Shepard Bushiri, last month. Aserie Ndlovu murder case postponed as fifth suspect joins
The murder case was postponed after the newly-arrested fifth suspect opted to appoint a private lawyer. Picture: Facebook/Sbusiso Aserie Ndlovu The case of the five men charged in connection with the disappearance and murder of journalist Aserie Ndlovu and his partner, Zodwa Mdluli, has been postponed to 4 July. The case was postponed to allow the fifth suspect, Thabang Isaac Hlophe, to secure legal representation after joining the other four. Father Samuel Mogowe, Lucky Sikhosana, David Madisha, and Sello Skhalo Uoane previously abandoned their bail applications. Court appearance for formal joinder The five accused, who appeared in the KwaMhlanga Magistrate's Court in Mpumalanga on Friday, are facing two counts of kidnapping and murder each. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Monica Nyuswa said Friday's court appearance was for the formal joinder of Hlophe to the matter and a possible bail application on his behalf. 'However, the application did not proceed as Hlophe opted to appoint a private attorney to represent him,' Nyuswa said. All suspects have been remanded in custody. 'The [NPA] condemns acts of violent crime and remains resolute in pursuing justice for victims,' Nyuswa said. The accused were arrested on different occasions during a police intelligence-driven operation. The first suspect arrested was the last to be in the company of the missing couple. 'The second, third and fourth suspects that have been arrested were found with different vehicle parts believed to be those of the missing journalist,' police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said shortly after the arrests. 'One of those arrested is said to be a mechanic who builds and fixes cars in the KwaMhlanga area. Two VW Citi Golfs that were found in possession of the suspects have been seized,' Mathe added. Remains and DNA confirmation Skeletal remains with gunshot wounds, believed to be of the missing couple, were discovered in Rust de Winter along the Limpopo-Gauteng border in May after the suspects identified the location. Earlier this month, police confirmed that DNA analysis positively linked the remains to Ndlovu and Mdluli. 'The human remains were analysed and matched with the reference sample of the biological relatives of the deceased. A positive DNA match thus confirms that the discovered remains are those of the missing couple,' Mathe said at the time.
