It's the last chance for Southwest plane tickets with two free checked bags, as policy ends in days

CNBC26-05-2025

Set your alarm. Southwest Airlines customers have only one day to go before the company starts charging to check bags for the first time in more than half a century.
Starting Wednesday, Southwest will end its blanket "two bags fly free" policy.
It was a perk that was sacrosanct among customers and the airlines' longtime executives alike, setting the airline apart from competitors. But baggage fees brought in nearly $7.3 billion for U.S. airlines last year, according to federal data, and Southwest executives who have long vowed to hold onto the policy have been under pressure to raise revenue.
The airline hasn't yet said how much it will charge to check bags, but rivals generally charge about $35 or $40 for a first checked bag for domestic flights, though there are some exceptions.
Along with starting to charge for checked bags, Southwest has announced major changes to its business model over the past year, like getting rid of open seating. The carrier is also debuting basic-economy tickets like those sold by Delta Air Lines, American Airlines and United Airlines on Wednesday.
Here's what travelers should know about the end of free bags on Southwest:
Southwest will no longer offer two free checked bags with many tickets purchased on or after Wednesday. For tickets purchased before then, a Southwest spokesman said the carrier will honor the terms of those fares, like the two free checked bags.
The fees will apply to its no-frills Basic, its Wanna Get Away Plus and its Anytime fares.
Southwest announced the policy in March after months of pressure from activist Elliott Investment Management, which took a stake in the airline last year and won five board seats, pushing for major changes at the company like its free checked bags, changeable tickets and open seating.
Yes. Travelers with top-tier status in Southwest's Rapid Rewards loyalty program will get two free checked bags, as will customers in the highest-level Business Select fares.
Customers with a Southwest Airlines co-branded credit card and their travel companions booked together with the same card won't get charged for their first standard checked bag.
A-List frequent flyer members, the second-highest tier in the loyalty program, will also get their first bag checked free of charge.
Southwest on Wednesday will also start selling basic-economy tickets.
With the new Basic fare, customers won't be able to make changes to their tickets, they'll be among the last customers to board and their fare credits will expire in six months, compared with 12 months for other ticket classes.
In another change, the airline is ending its Wanna Get Away fare, which was the lowest tier ticket before the changes.
Southwest has been known for its open-seating model for decades. Loyalists often obsessively check in a day before their flight in hopes of scoring a favorable boarding slot.
But later this year, Southwest says it will start selling tickets for flights in 2026 that will have seat assignments. It is also outfitting its planes with extra legroom seats, like many of its competitors, that fetch higher prices.
Southwest executives have told staff that they expect passengers to carry on more luggage (those policies for free carry-ons aren't changing) and have said the airline is installing larger overhead bins on its Boeing fleet, which should help with an influx of carry-on bags.
Executives have also said staff will get mobile bag-tag printers at gates and airport lobbies to assist customers.
Southwest can hardly post on social media — even about babies and puppies on board — without getting angry comments about the changed baggage policy.
But CEO Bob Jordan told CNBC last month that the policy change announcement the company made on March 11 hasn't deterred customers.
"We have seen no book-down on that day or after that day," he said on "Squawk on the Street" on April 24.

Films celebrating South West landscapes released

A series of films described as "visual and verbal poetry" have been released which show landscapes of Devon and Cornwall. The films, named Wild Westcountry Odyssey, have been co-funded by Natural England and made by Plymouth-based filmmaker Simon Willis. Contributions have also been made by the University of Exeter and National Trust. The first film - which was released on Monday - celebrates the landscape and wildlife in Kynance and the return of the chough to the Lizard peninsular in Cornwall. More news stories for Cornwall Listen to the latest news for Cornwall Each film features two short poems written by John Wedgwood Clarke, professor of Poetry at the University of Exeter. The remaining five films will be released weekly until 21 July. Mr Wedgwood Clarke said: "I hope these films, and the visual and verbal poetry they contain, inspire people to explore this beautiful part of the world and think about how they can support, in whatever way they can, the work the goes in to helping people and nature thrive together in these special places." Mr Willis said: "It's been a privilege to work with all the nature reserves and John. "The human effort that goes into keeping them thriving for wildlife is remarkable. "I hope our images and John's words encourage people to look beyond the picture postcard and really value the wildlife that makes the South West such a great place to visit." And David Burton, of Natural England, added: "We supported the production of the films to research how creative media can help re-set the relationships between people and nature within the framework of Protected Site Strategies. "The approach is to educate and highlight the need for nature recovery to everyone." Follow BBC Cornwall on X, Facebook and Instagram. 10 Brilliant Growth Stocks to Buy Now and Hold for the Long Term

Electric vehicles, next-generation data centers, semiconductors, digital technology, and machine vision are just a few of the investment themes explored. Some of these companies have encountered near-term headwinds, creating attractive buying opportunities. All these stocks have powerful underlying secular growth drivers. These 10 stocks could mint the next wave of millionaires › Not all of the growth stocks featured here will likely deliver outsize returns, so it makes sense to spread portfolio risk around a collection of holdings. In that line of thought, here are 10 growth stock ideas for investors to consider. They range from a couple of high-profile household names, such as Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) and Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL), to companies like Navitas Semiconductor (NASDAQ: NVTS) and Synopsys (NASDAQ: SNPS), which are less well known. You might want to consider buying and holding any (or all) of these equities long-term. The key to the investment case for Tesla lies in its promised robotaxis and unsupervised full self-driving (FSD) software, which is scheduled to launch on a limited basis beginning this week. Tesla is already a highly successful automaker and the dominant player in electric vehicles (EVs) in the U.S., and robotaxis offer the prospect of transforming it into a company able to generate high-margin and recurring revenue from owning its robotaxi fleet or revenue sharing from Tesla's transformed fleet using Full Self-Driving (FSD) software. There's also the dedicated robotaxi, Cybercab, and the potential to sell FSD on a subscription basis. And all of it will be supported by Tesla's market-leading position in EVs and its ability to develop affordable EVs in the future. Nvidia partners Navitas Semiconductor and Vertiv (NYSE: VRT) and the next generation of data centers, namely 800-volt (V) high voltage direct current (HVDC), which I've discussed in more detail elsewhere, so investors with the time and inclination can peruse. Nvidia believes they will be more efficient, with lower maintenance costs and significantly lower costs of ownership. The new data centers, scheduled for 2027, employ a different power conversion method, and Navitas is developing Gallium Nitride (GaN) and Silicon Carbide (SiC) power semiconductors to enable more efficient power conversion in 800V HVDC data centers. Similarly, another Nvidia partner, and leading data center equipment provider, Vertiv, is developing critical power and cooling equipment and systems for the new data centers and expects to have them available in the second half of 2026, in time for the launch of the 800V HVDC data center in 2027. What makes both companies particularly interesting is that, unlike their rivals, they are more like pure plays in their end markets. For example, Navitas specializes in GaN and SiC chips for power conversion (not silicon), and 80% of Vertiv's revenue comes from data centers. Speaking of SiC and GaN chips, Aehr's (NASDAQ: AEHR) stock has soared recently on speculation that Navitas might be a customer for Aehr's testing and burn-in equipment. Aehr's equipment helps semiconductor manufacturers ensure quality and reliability throughout the manufacturing process. Aehr has struggled recently as its revenue at SiC customers, including ON Semiconductor, has declined in light of pullbacks in EV investment. Still, Aehr is making good progress in opening up and winning customers in new markets, including GaN semiconductors and semiconductors for artificial intelligence (AI) processing. Synopsys is a leader in electronic design automation software (used to design and verify chips), and its intended acquisition of engineering simulation and analysis company Ansys is a key event. The aim is to create a company offering design software, as well as simulation and analysis software to test the fruits of the design. It will also open up Synopsys' solutions to Ansys' wider range of end-market customers, particularly as semiconductors and electronics are increasingly being embedded in a range of new industries. The advanced materials company's lightweight composites are the future of the aerospace industry, as every new generation of airplane contains more composites. This means Hexcel (NYSE: HXL) can grow as airplane production increases (Airbus and Boeing have multiyear backlogs in place) and new, more composite-rich airplanes are developed. Hexcel has faced headwinds in recent years as Airbus' and Boeing's delivery rates have fallen short of expectations, but it's only a matter of time before they improve. Cognex (NASDAQ: CGNX) is another company with excellent long-term secular growth prospects (the use of machine vision in automated processes) that has suffered near-term headwinds (weakness in key end markets like automotive and consumer electronics). Still, this is a temporary slowdown in a long-term growth story. PTC (NASDAQ: PTC) provides computer-aided design (CAD), product lifecycle management (PLM), and other solutions essential to creating a so-called "digital thread" for a physical product as it moves from design through manufacturing, use, servicing, and ultimately disposal. As such, it's a leading player in the digitization of the industrial sector. Trimble's (NASDAQ: TRMB) precise positioning hardware (its origins) and growing software/services also make it a leading play on digitization. In Trimble's case, it's about integrating physical positioning with the digital world, such as in construction and infrastructure work, transportation, and geospatial activities. Through the use of advanced analytics in the digital world, Trimble's solutions can be integrated into its customers' daily workflows. Last but not least, Delta's growing mix of premium cabin revenue, loyalty program, co-brand card remuneration, and ability to adjust and compete in economy tickets when necessary means it's a much more diversified airline than a decade ago. In addition, as a network operator, it's much better positioned to deal with the growing cost pressures in the industry than low-cost carriers. Despite headwinds in 2025, it's ideally placed to generate value for shareholders over the long term. Ever feel like you missed the boat in buying the most successful stocks? Then you'll want to hear this. On rare occasions, our expert team of analysts issues a 'Double Down' stock recommendation for companies that they think are about to pop. If you're worried you've already missed your chance to invest, now is the best time to buy before it's too late. And the numbers speak for themselves: Nvidia: if you invested $1,000 when we doubled down in 2009, you'd have $373,066!* Apple: if you invested $1,000 when we doubled down in 2008, you'd have $38,158!* Netflix: if you invested $1,000 when we doubled down in 2004, you'd have $664,089!* Right now, we're issuing 'Double Down' alerts for three incredible companies, available when you join , and there may not be another chance like this anytime soon.*Stock Advisor returns as of June 9, 2025 Lee Samaha has no position in any of the stocks mentioned. Former Swansea head coach Luke Williams working at Bristol Airport while on gardening leave

Luke Williams, who was the head coach of the Championship club Swansea City as recently as February, is now working at Bristol Airport. A photo of Williams at the airport, wearing uniform, was posted on social media on Saturday, prompting a reaction of disbelief among many people, in some cases questioning whether the picture was some sort of a hoax. Advertisement A source close to Williams has since confirmed to The Athletic that the 44-year-old has been employed at Bristol Airport, which is in the south west of England, for the last two weeks. Williams' job involves helping disabled and limited-mobility passengers around the airport terminal. The former Notts County and Swindon manager is on gardening leave since being sacked by Swansea in February after 13 months in charge at the Welsh club, and, on the face of it, there is no financial need to work while he waits for another opportunity in football to come up. However, Williams has always talked about the importance of a good work ethic — 'in my opinion, motivation in life is everything', he told The Guardian in a wide-ranging interview in February 2024 — and, according to those close to him, he was keen to do something meaningful with his time rather than sit at home. It is a highly unusual tale but, at the same time, in keeping with Williams' backstory. In that interview with The Guardian, Williams explained how he had loaded lorries for British Home Stores, and also drove minibuses to and from airports and nightclubs, to help to fund his coaching career in the early days, when he was earning £1.50 ($2) for every player that attended his sessions. Williams also applied to get on an electrician's course when he left Swansea for the first time, two years ago, when he had been working as assistant manager to Russell Martin. He subsequently took over at Notts County and led the club back into the English Football League via the play-offs, playing an expansive and attractive brand of football that prompted Swansea to appoint him as head coach in January last year.
