Nagaland observes World Day against Child Labour with call to protect children's rights

The Print12-06-2025

Joint Labour Commissioner T Chubayanger cited growing reports of families — particularly in urban centres like Kohima — employing children under the pretext of 'mission work' or as domestic help, often subjecting them to neglect or abuse.
The event, marked by awareness drives for leaders of colonies and wards, emphasised that despite progress, child labour persists in various forms across the state.
Kohima, Jun 12 (PTI) Nagaland observed 'World Day Against Child Labour' on Thursday, with a call for all stakeholders — including government agencies, civil society, and the public — to intensify efforts in eliminating child labour and safeguarding children's rights.
He reiterated that employing children below 14 years is illegal, carrying penalties of up to six months imprisonment and Rs 20,000 fine or both.
Adolescents aged between 14 and 18 may be employed only under non-hazardous conditions, with limited working hours, he said, adding that violations can result in fines and imprisonment.
'If both husband and wife are working, they should employ an adult to look after their children instead of violating the rights of another child,' he said.
Chubayanger said the Labour department, in coordination with other agencies, has initiated raid of establishments which include shops, commercial establishments, workshops, farms, restaurants, etc.
The joint labour commissioner also announced that surprise inspections of homes where children are engaged as domestic helpers and schools targeting cases of children being consecutively absent for more than 15 days under the Right to Education Act would be launched soon.
Deputy Commissioner of Kohima, B Henok Buchem, reaffirmed the district's commitment to penalise those employing children illegally.
'As a people known for our warrior heritage and Christian values, it is unacceptable that crimes against children are being normalised in our society,' he said.
He called for collective responsibility and moral vigilance, urging society not to judge children based on their socio-economic background.
Kohima District Child Protection Officer Sekho Dawhuo highlighted the role of the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) under the Mission Vatsalya programme.
The DCPU is responsible for protecting vulnerable children — including those in need of care, children in conflict with the law, and children eligible for adoption, he said.
The officer stressed the importance of community participation in identifying child labour and abuse, urging citizens to immediately report such cases to local police or dial the Child Helpline 1098, a 24×7 emergency outreach service.
Dawhuo emphasised the role of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), a legal body constituted under the Juvenile Justice Act, empowered to ensure the rehabilitation and care of rescued children.
He reminded the media to protect the identity of children involved in abuse or labour cases, as per Section 74 of the Juvenile Justice (Care & Protection) Act 2015.
'Violating this section by revealing any identifying details can result in imprisonment of up to six months or a fine of up to Rs 2 lakh,' he said. PTI NBS NBS RG

Extortion case: BRS MLA Kaushik Reddy arrested at Hyderabad airport, granted bail within hours

HANUMAKONDA: In a dramatic late-night swoop, Warangal police arrested BRS MLA Padi Kaushik Reddy at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad on Friday and whisked him away to Hanumakonda for questioning in an extortion case . However, in a surprising turn, a Kazipet court rejected the police remand plea and granted him bail on a Rs 20,000 personal bond within hours, bringing an end to the 18-hour high drama. The Huzurabad legislator was booked by the Subedari police on a complaint filed by Katta Umadevi, wife of granite businessman Manoj Reddy. In her complaint, lodged on April 21, Umadevi alleged that Kaushik Reddy had been threatening her husband for over 20 days, demanding money from Manoj for running his granite business in Vangapally village in Kamalapur mandal. She alleged that Kaushik Reddy had already extorted Rs 25 lakh and, on April 18, called again demanding Rs 50 lakh. According to the complaint, he threatened to kill Manoj Reddy and his family and used abusive language. Subedari police registered a case under sections 308(2), 308(4), and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The MLA had earlier moved the Telangana high court seeking to quash the FIR. However, the court dismissed his plea on June 16 and vacated the interim protection from arrest, instructing him to cooperate with the investigation. Despite this direction, police claimed that the MLA was evading questioning, which prompted his arrest upon arrival at the airport. After his arrest, Kaushik Reddy was taken to the Subedari police station and later to MGM Hospital for a mandatory medical check-up before being produced in Kazipet railway court. His arrest sparked protests from BRS workers. Former minister Errabelli Dayakar Rao and ex-chief whip Dasyam Vinay Bhaskar arrived at the police station, demanding to meet the MLA. Party workers also attempted to burn an effigy of chief minister A Revanth Reddy outside the station, prompting police to detain several of them and shift them to Madikonda police station. Police will continue their investigation into the extortion charges, sources said.

Amid Pune Rains, Couple's Bike Skids Due To Pothole. Two Men Rush To Help But...

Last Updated: The couple immediately rushed to the Kondhwa police station and registered a complaint against the two men. Two unidentified men, under the pretext of offering help, allegedly stole gold jewellery worth Rs 75,000 from a couple who had just met with an accident on their way home in Pune. The incident took place on Thursday at around 10 pm near Shriram Chowk in Tilekarnagar, Kondhwa. According to TOI, 32-year-old Sachin Sanjay Mahajan and his wife were en route home from Yewalewadi when their motorcycle slid down the road after hitting a pothole and they both fell off the motorcycle. The Kondhwa-based shop owner stated that he fainted for a while, and his wife sustained minor injuries on her hands. Soon after, two men, who posed as Good Samaritans, offered them help and also lifted their motorcycle and parked it properly. The couple thanked the two men for a sweet gesture as they were leaving the place. While talking to his wife shortly after the accident, the man realised that his gold chain worth Rs 75,000 was missing. The couple looked for it in the area but couldn't find it and that's when their suspicion fell on the two men who had helped them. As they decided to go after them, they found out that the duo might have stolen the keys to their motorcycle as well. The couple immediately rushed to the Kondhwa police station and registered a complaint against the two men. Vinay Patankar, Senior Police Inspector, told the Free Press Journal (FPJ) that they are investigating the CCTV footage in the area and the snatchers will be arrested soon. Kondhwa Police have registered a case under Sections 303(2) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). First Published: June 22, 2025, 07:30 IST
