Serial rapist gets 25 more years after victim spots him in hospital

A convicted serial rapist already serving multiple sentences has been found guilty of yet another rape after one of his victims recognised him during a routine hospital visit and alerted the police.
THE 2016 ATTACK
On that fateful Saturday afternoon in May 2016, the victim, then 21 years old, was on her way to a hitchhiking spot along Secunda Road (R546) near Charl Cilliers in Standerton, Mpumalanga, provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane explained in a statement.
According to Ndubane, at approximately 2pm, before reaching her destination, she accepted a lift from Zakhele Isaac Mahlangu (44), who was driving a white vehicle and claimed he was headed in the same direction.
While en route, he diverted from the main road, claiming he needed to pick up others from a nearby farm.
He turned onto a gravel road near a dumping site, crossed a railway line and stopped the vehicle. It is alleged that he moved to the passenger seat, used a hat to cover the victim's nose, and physically assaulted her. The suspect then tied her with a seatbelt, forcibly removed her clothing and raped her multiple times without protection, despite her resistance and cries for help.

After the attack, Mahlangu wiped himself and the victim with an old cloth, removed the vehicle's registration plates, and hid them under the driver's seat.
He then threw the victim's belongings out of the vehicle and dumped her in an isolated area.
The victim managed to contact emergency services and was referred to Standerton Police Station for investigation and medical examination.
THE COLD CASE BREAKTHROUGH
The case went cold until late last year when the victim encountered Mahlangu under heavy prison guard escort at a local hospital.
She immediately recognised him and reported to the police that he was the man who had attacked her.
Ndubane said:
In a dramatic twist, the victim, who had not seen her attacker since the incident, recognised him years later while he was under the escort of prison wardens at a local hospital.
She further explained that the police swiftly investigated the matter, and the suspect was positively linked to the crime, formally charged and brought to trial.
SENTENCING
On 20 June 2025, the Standerton Magistrates' Court sentenced him to 25 years' imprisonment for the 2016 rape.
This sentence will run concurrently with multiple other terms he is already serving for a string of violent crimes.
PREVIOUS CONVICTIONS
In August 2021, the same offender was convicted and handed down multiple sentences for a series of crimes committed during his reign of terror in Standerton between 2014 and 2017.

A man who filmed himself raping a vulnerable woman after a night out has had his six-year sentence increased after senior judges ruled it was unduly lenient. Gagandeep Gulati sent videos he took of the attack, in Castle Gardens in Leicester last September, to others before telling police he was the one who had been raped and sexually assaulted by the victim. The 20-year-old was convicted of rape, assault by penetration, sexual assault and sharing or threatening to share an intimate photograph or film, and sentenced at Leicester Crown Court in March. However, the Court of Appeal increased that to nine years following a hearing on Thursday. The case was referred by Solicitor General Lucy Rigby under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme. The court also imposed concurrent sentences for the assault by penetration and sexual assault of four years and six months respectively. It further ruled the offence of sharing or threatening to share an intimate photograph or film would be quashed, because it was incorrectly tried in a crown court, instead treating the filming as an aggravating feature of the rape. Lord Justice Popplewell, one of a panel of three judges, said Gulati's motive for taking videos of the attack was "seeking to give the false impression of consent", which was a "significant aggravating factor". He concluded that the original sentence "was not merely lenient, but unduly so". The judge said Gulati, then aged 19, encountered his victim in Leicester city centre on 23 September as they both made their way home from nights out. He took the woman, who was intoxicated, to a secluded location in the park and attacked her. After his arrest, Gulati, then studying business at university in the city, told police: "She forced me, I did not force her. I am a religious person. I did not do anything wrong." Lord Justice Popplewell said Gulati told police that his victim forced herself on him, and that he had considered reporting her to the authorities. Gulati also suggested that the videos he took showed "he was afraid for his life at the time of the activity", the judge said. After being convicted, the sentencing judge said that Gulati filming the attack was "nothing more than a cynical and contrived attempt to protect himself" and showed him "boasting of his predatory sexual prowess". After the hearing, the Solicitor General Lucy Rigby welcomed the increased sentence. Police officers charged with murder of Kenyan blogger

Three police officers in Kenya have been charged with the murder of a 31-year-old blogger who died in police custody earlier this month. Albert Ojwang's death has sparked outrage in Kenya with protests held to demand justice. Man arrested for Umlazi mass shooting that left eight dead

A 28-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a mass murder in Umlazi's Zama informal settlement last month, where eight people died. The man was arrested over the weekend. KwaZulu-Natal provincial police spokesperson Captain Ntathu Ndlovu confirmed the arrest, and said the suspect would appear in the Umlazi Magistrate's Court on Tuesday. The mass shooting took place on 16 May. Police said they responded to reports of multiple murders, and upon arrival at the scene, eight people - six men and two women - whose ages range between 22 and 40 years old, were found lying in a pool of blood with multiple gunshot wounds. According to the police, the victims were inside the dwelling when an unknown number of suspects entered and opened fire, killing the victims at the scene. Police said they are investigating possible motives for the killings and have launched a manhunt for additional suspects. They have also appealed to anyone who may have information that could assist in the investigation to contact the nearest police station or call the crime stop number, 086 001 0111.
