Brendan Fevola leads struggling footy side to victory, but it was bad news for singer Guy Sebastian

Daily Mail10-05-2025

Brendan Fevola made a surprise return to the footy field on Saturday morning, helping struggling local club Masala Dandenong break a long losing streak in front of a buzzing crowd at Lois Twohig Reserve.
The former AFL superstar lined up for the club's reserves side in the Division 5 Thirds of the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA), alongside pop icon and Australian Idol winner Guy Sebastian.
What began as a quirky radio promotion turned into a gritty on-field performance, as Fevola and Sebastian led Masala to a tense 55–53 win over South Melbourne Districts.
The appearance came just one week after the team's demoralising 229-point thrashing at the hands of St Bede's Mentone.
Fevola's involvement came via a Fox FM competition, where he offered to play for a grassroots club in need.
Masala Dandenong, last on the ladder and desperate for a spark, jumped at the opportunity.
Despite being 44 and long retired from the AFL, it was vintage Fevola on the day, booting six goals to steer his adopted side to victory.
'Fev doing what he does best, winning the games,' one fan posted.
'That's amazing! Well done guys and especially Brendan Fevola and Guy Sebastian,' added another.
The club had earlier teased the surprise additions on social media, promising fans a unique matchday experience, including Sebastian performing at halftime.
But the crowd got more than they bargained for when Sebastian strapped on the boots and joined the starting line-up.
While Fevola helped control the game with his trademark goal sense, it was a mixed day for Sebastian, who was later seen on crutches following the match. It's unclear how serious the injury is.
Their participation wasn't without controversy. Before the match, VAFA launched an investigation into concerns raised by rival clubs over whether the high-profile pair were being paid - which is prohibited in the amateur league.
The league confirmed both Fevola and Sebastian were cleared to play after assurances they would receive no payment or benefits.
Sebastian's day was over early, though, limping from the field with an apparent leg injury

A Fox FM producer said both men were happy to sign a legal document confirming their amateur status.
'This is a promotional exercise for Fev (for the radio show) and Guy (for his music), not a money-making exercise,' the statement read.
Despite the off-field scrutiny, Fevola's on-field focus was unwavering.
'I'm pumped to be playing for Masala Dandenong on the weekend!' he said earlier in the week.

Lions will keep 'chests up and crack on'

Tom Curry says the British and Irish Lions must be prepared to have "tough conversations" in the wake of Friday's defeat by Argentina in Dublin. The Lions' hopes for a buoyant send-off before their Australian tour were spoiled by an enterprising Pumas outfit, who deservedly won 28-24 at Aviva Stadium. With the Lions now looking ahead to their tour opener against Western Force on Saturday in Perth (11:00 BST), Curry has called on the squad to "step up" and use Friday's loss as motivation to improve. "I have been in these situations before and we have got to pull tighter, it is the only way," said the 27-year-old England back row."I feel like this group has taken so many steps off the field. I have not got a bad word to say about anyone. "Everyone has been pulling in the right direction, especially the lads who came in this week, so when something goes against us we have got to keep our chests up and crack on with each other. "We have to have the tough conversations. I am not going to say it is going to be a party, we don't need that. But we have got to pull tight and hit the ground running when it comes to training." The Lions scored tries through Bundee Aki and Tadhg Beirne, either side of a penalty try, but Andy Farrell's side lacked a cutting edge when they entered Argentine Curry, who started all three Tests against South Africa in 2021, said the players must take responsibility for their "own performances and how excited" they became on the ball."That is the really annoying thing because on the flip side it's really exciting because we do have our hands on the ball and are in great spots," said the Sale flanker. "But come on, we need to take personal responsibility when we have it."Despite Friday's defeat, Curry described this year's Lions experience so far as "sick" after the Covid-hit series against the Springboks four years ago. "It's nice being in Dublin and people aren't booing you," he said. "I think that's a cool thing. We speak a lot about respect with our own team-mates."We've only got six weeks together. Respect is so hard to earn but so easy to lose and I think it's really important, like I said, that every session and meeting we turn up and push in the right direction."

Millie Mackintosh reveals close encounter with SHARKS after 'embarrassing' late night skinny-dipping on holiday

Millie Mackintosh has recalled an embarrassing moment she decided to go skinny dipping, unaware she was swimming amongst sharks. The former Made In Chelsea star, 35, was on holiday in Australia with pals, staying on Fraser Island [K'gari]. Millie, who was 18 at the time, and her friends had been warned not to swim in the sea because of neighbouring sharks, though decided to break the rules and try skinny dipping one night. Speaking to The Times, she explained: 'I thought that as long as I stayed close to the shore it would be fine. 'Suddenly these two lifeguards came running across the beach, waving at me. I could just hear them shouting, 'Get out of the water — it's shark mating season!' 'I had no clothes on, but in the end I decided that being embarrassed in front of the lifeguards was better than being eaten. 'When you're young you don't always do the most sensible things.' Meanwhile, Millie recently showed off her toned physique while on a family holiday to Turkey last month. She had been keeping fans updated during her relaxing break while topping up her bronzed complexion. Millie shared a collection of her gorgeous summery looks from the trip to her 1.4million followers on Instagram. In one picture, the busy mother wore a tiny blue and white bikini while showing off her collection of looks from her getaway. The star also recently opened up on her sexuality as she revealed she struggled during her younger years. She told how she would only find the coverage to 'kiss' women when she was drunk. Speaking to Caggie Dunlop's Saturn Returns Podcast, Millie said: 'As a teen when I would drink, I would make out with women, but that's not something I felt confident to do when I was sober... 'I had crushes on girls at school and I just didn't have the awareness to go ''I like girls as well.'' I'd just have crushes and get all weird about them. I remember having sleepovets and going ''I wonder if they're going to kiss me.''' Millie added that a lot of her struggles have been unpacked in therapy, telling Caggie: 'I've explored a lot of my relationship to women, I was bullied so I definitely have intimacy issues with women, but there's this attraction as well. 'Obviously I'm married to a man, it's not something that affects our relationship at all now, but looking back and realising that was one of the reasons I drank in a destructive way, because there was a part of myself I didn't understand and I didn't know how to express it and I felt scared to express it. 'Everytime I would drink I would just keep doing it, even if I was in a relationship.' Millie went sober in 2022 and has spoken honestly about her battle with drink, releasing her very own book titled 'Bad Drunk'. Sharing the moment she opened up to husband Hugo Taylor about her sexuality, she revealed that he was incredibly supportive.
