Going viral on TikTok helped Pitstop Tyres clear S$400,000 of debt; now second-gen owner wants to make it Singapore's top auto shop

[SINGAPORE] Once on the brink of bankruptcy, home-grown auto repair shop Pitstop Tyres is now making more than S$1 million in annual revenue – thanks to its second-generation owner's fresh approach.
When Cordillia Tan joined the family business in end-2020, she brought along her experience in a venture capital firm, where she helped early-stage startups accelerate their growth.
But she did not expect to spend the next few years trying to pull the company out of debt.
Her father, Edmund Tan, opened Pitstop Tyres in 2009 after a career in the industry – first as a tyre fitter and then a factory manager, in companies including Singapore-listed Stamford Tyres.
The business was running well until a discovery of financial misconduct forced him to clean house and hire afresh for many roles. The Covid-19 pandemic struck soon after, making it challenging for the business to regain momentum.
But the elder Tan never revealed to his family how badly the business was doing.

'My father was very worried to tell the family that the banks were chasing him, and the business was struggling,' said Cordillia Tan in an interview with The Business Times.
She uncovered the extent of the company's financial troubles only after she saw first-hand the outstanding bills and declining sales.
The business was clocking just S$15,000 in monthly revenue, servicing only three to five vehicles daily. At the same time, it was overdue on utility bills and owed multiple suppliers money.
Problem-solving
To help her father's business survive, Tan applied her experience in helping startups to scale.
But first, she had to get up to speed on how the automotive industry worked. 'I thought I would be in the corporate world for the rest of my life, so I did not even have a driving licence,' she admitted.
She recalled an embarrassing incident where her mechanic had asked her to step on the car brake, but she did not know which pedal that was. After that, she took part-time automotive courses.
'I did all the short courses that were available, so at least I would not be an idiot; and when I open the bonnet, I know what is going on.'
Her next challenge was understanding the business well enough to tackle its problems.
'My mistake was that being startup-savvy, I knew all the right strategies to bring. But I did not realise how difficult it would be to bring those things into an SME (small and medium-sized enterprise).'
Sales funnels and customer relationship management systems, for example, can be easily adopted by young startups with organised processes, she noted.
But if an SME has years of fragmented customer data, records and processes have to be fixed before new strategies can be implemented.
'When I came in, it was very hard for me to prioritise anything, because I was just problem-solving,' she said.
Beyond overhauling internal processes, she also had to negotiate and rebuild relationships with suppliers who were unhappy due to the outstanding debts.
'I was walking up and down Chinatown to lawyers' offices to ask if we could negotiate with their clients to come up with a payment plan.'

Turning point
Beyond fixing problems, the business also needed new ways of generating revenue. So in August 2021, Tan turned to TikTok to market the business.
It took eight months of trial and error, and steady content, before she made a breakthrough. She found success in making educational content about car maintenance, sharing what she learnt as she went along.
As views went up, so did the number of customers, boosting monthly revenue to a range of S$30,000 to S$60,000.
Yet, while higher revenues helped to cover costs, this did not make a dent in the debt.
In early 2023, Pitstop Tyres began to expand its services beyond tyre sales and replacements to include rim repairs as well as general car repair and maintenance.
The move to diversify was also because tyre sales do not have good profit margins, said Tan. These new services now contribute half of the company's revenue, with the rest from tyre sales.
Having more services also necessitated a move to a bigger shop – an investment which she felt was worth making to accommodate the additional equipment and parking space needed to scale the business.
'Even though it was a very painful decision to throw all the money saved up into the deposit for this (new) shop, I think we really just had no choice but to move here,' she said.
New ambitions
Pitstop Tyres has not yet turned profitable, but is on track to clear its debt in two years.
Instead of a target for annual revenue, Tan has a salary target for employees, hoping to give annual increments of 10 to 20 per cent.
With the debt-free goal in sight, she wants to focus on customer service, with the eventual aim of becoming Singapore's top automotive shop.
'I want to make sure that the experience at my workshop is unmatched (by others),' she said. 'So instead of trying to expand outwards, what I want to do is to make sure that everything in my shop is tight so that we do not need to chase business.'
Pitstop Tyres makes in-store pricing prominent so that customers know exactly what they are paying for, she said, noting that car workshops are often seen as having shady business practices.
'I want everything to just be transparent and honest,' she said. 'This is my way of doing business.'
In 2024, Edmund Tan retired from the business, leaving his daughter fully in charge. Reflecting on her entrepreneurial journey, Cordillia Tan said: '(Back when I joined), I did not have any vision for the company. I just knew that I was suffering.'
'I was very proud of the company surviving, definitely. Not dying is an achievement,' she added. 'So I'm very happy with how far we've come. And I would say I'm proud of the team I've built.'

April's core inflation figure of 0.7 per cent had marked the first year-on-year increase after six months. On a month-on-month basis, core inflation – which excludes accommodation and private transport – eased to 0.0 per cent in May. Overall inflation dipped to 0.8 per cent, down from 0.9 per cent in April, due to lower private transport inflation. SECTORS Food inflation decreased from 1.4 per cent in April to 1.1 per cent in May as the prices of non-cooked food moderated. Private transport costs fell at a slower pace from 1.3 per cent to 1.1 per cent due to a smaller increase in car prices. Electricity and gas inflation slowed further from -3.5 per cent to -3.7 per cent on the back of a larger decline in electricity prices. Retail and other goods inflation fell at a slower pace from -1.2 per cent to -1.0 per cent due to a rise in the prices of household appliances and a smaller decline in the cost of personal effects. Services inflation remained unchanged at 1.1 per cent, as the larger increase in the costs of point-to-point transport services and health insurance offset a steeper decline in holiday expenses. It was the same for accommodation inflation, which held at 1.1 per cent, on account of a smaller increase in housing rents being negated by a larger increase in the cost of housing maintenance and repairs. OUTLOOK MAS and MTI said that Singapore's imported inflation is expected to remain "moderate", noting that while global crude oil prices have risen in recent weeks, they are currently still close to the average in 2024. "Food commodity price increases should also stay contained," they added. "Although the trade conflicts and the increase in global energy prices could be inflationary for some economies, their impact on Singapore's import prices is likely to be offset by the disinflationary drags exerted by weaker global demand." Domestically, unit labour costs are projected to rise gradually alongside moderating nominal wage growth and improving productivity. "At the same time, enhanced government subsidies for essential services such as public healthcare, pre-school education and public transport will continue to dampen services inflation," said MAS and MTI. Taking these factors into account, core inflation and overall inflation are projected to average between 0.5 per cent and 1.5 per cent this year.

SINGAPORE/HONG KONG: In a move that signals the growing global momentum behind autonomous vehicles, Chinese tech giant Baidu Inc. is preparing to launch its Apollo Go robotaxi service in Singapore and Malaysia by the end of 2025. Sources close to the matter say Baidu is in talks with local taxi operators and mobility service providers , seeking to tailor a business model that fits the unique transport ecosystems of both countries. The company is adopting what it calls an 'asset-light' strategy —prioritising partnerships over direct fleet ownership—underscoring its interest in collaborating with trusted local players. Baidu has been building up its capabilities steadily. Since its launch, Apollo Go has clocked more than 11 million rides , largely in China, and deployed over 1,000 autonomous vehicles . These figures put it ahead of Waymo , the autonomous arm of Google parent Alphabet, which has reached around 10 million paid rides globally. This Southeast Asian expansion comes at a time when Tesla is also on the cusp of launching its long-anticipated Cybercab robotaxi network in the United States, heightening competition in the driverless mobility race. Beyond Singapore and Malaysia, Baidu has its sights set on Europe and the Middle East. Singapore's AV push gathers steam Just days before the Chinese tech giant confirmed plans to introduce its Apollo Go autonomous ride-hailing service in Singapore and Malaysia, Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow unveiled new plans to scale up the country's own autonomous vehicle (AV) ambitions. At a transport policy event earlier this month, Siow called AVs 'a crucial lever' in tackling Singapore's manpower shortage in public transport, particularly bus services. While Singapore's population continues to grow and towns such as Tengah , Pasir Ris , and Punggol expand, the supply of bus drivers has not kept pace. Autonomous buses, Siow argued, could plug this gap. 'Introducing new bus routes isn't as straightforward as just buying more buses. We also need drivers — and we're running out,' he said. Singapore's AV journey isn't new. Trials began as early as 2015 , and testbeds have since emerged in places like NUS , Jurong Innovation District , and Punggol . But 2026 marks a turning point: for the first time, autonomous public buses will be tested along two existing routes. SINGAPORE: The low-lying Jalan Besar area now has a fully automated facility that can hold up to four Olympic swimming pools' worth of stormwater in the event of heavy rains. National water agency PUB on Monday (Jun 23) announced the completion of the Syed Alwi pumping station, which takes up about 1,190sqm underground or one-sixth of a football field. Plans for the station were first announced in 2021, as part of Singapore's wider efforts to adapt to more frequent and intense rainstorms due to climate change. This is Singapore's third pumping station. The other two, along Poole Road and Wimborne Road, were constructed in the 1990s to enhance flood resilience in the Tanjong Katong estate. The initial plan for the site along Syed Alwi Road was for a detention tank, which stores water for an extended period. A pumping station is different in that it continuously pumps out water and does not store it for a long time. Jalan Besar is a low-lying area that faced flooding from the 2000s to 2010s, PUB said in a press release on Tuesday, noting that drains along Syed Alwi Road were already upgraded in 2014. The road level was also raised to mitigate flooding in the area, and Rochor Canal was widened and deepened in 2015 to increase its drainage capacity, the press release read. This enhanced flood protection in nearby areas, including Veerasamy Road, Hindoo Road and Desker Road. Upgrading drainage infrastructure and raising the ground levels through redevelopment is not always feasible, as this depends on the site's limitations and land availability, said Ms Gayathri Kalyanaraman, deputy director of drainage planning at PUB's catchment and waterways department. The Jalan Besar area illustrates this challenge, she added, noting that the drains and canal have already been upgraded, but any further enhancements would not be effective due to the area's low-lying topography. 'In consideration of the many heritage buildings in this area, the Syed Alwi pumping station is an alternative approach to provide adequate flood protection for the area without the need for redevelopment or to raise ground levels,' she said. Two drains along Syed Alwi Road used to flow directly into Rochor Canal. But the canal also receives water from other areas, so if water were to build up during a heavy storm, it could cause water to back up in drains along the low-lying Jalan Besar area and parts of Little India. This will now be countered with the new pumping station, which has two floodgates that will be shut to prevent the backflow. During a storm, rain that falls over the area will flow into the pumping station through three inlets, diverting stormwater from upstream of Rochor Canal into an underground tank. The water will pass through metal grilles that can sieve out large debris. Once the height of the water in the tank reaches 4.5m, the station will start pumping the water out to the downstream section of the canal. The station is designed to integrate with nearby Build-to-Order flats that are currently under construction, with the additional inclusion of a green roof, an open plaza and a green wall, said PUB in the press release. In a pre-recorded address played at the Singapore International Water Week on Monday (June 23), Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu said that strengthening flood adaptation and resilience is an "urgent priority" and the country is developing a national adaptation plan to guide long-term strategies. "Floods, droughts, and extreme weather will keep testing our systems and our resolve. But they also present an opportunity for collective action. Not just by building more robust flood barriers, but by creating smarter systems, stronger communities, and weaving resilience into the way we plan, build, and live." Ms Fu previously said in February that Singapore will spend about S$150 million (US$110.6 million) on drainage upgrading projects in the 2025 financial year, to strengthen the country's flood resilience amid increasing risks due to climate change. PUB has taken a "multi-pronged approach" to enhance Singapore's flood resilience, she said at the time. Since 2011, the government has spent about S$2.5 billion to upgrade Singapore's drainage infrastructure and is currently reviewing the drainage infrastructure plan for the next review cycle of 2026 to 2030, the minister had said.
