National outlets project chances of Mark Sears, Grant Nelson being taken in 2025 NBA Draft

USA Today8 hours ago

The Alabama Crimson Tide have sent six players to the next level via the NBA Draft under Nate Oats since his abbreviated first season as head coach in 2019-20.
Former Crimson Tide guard Kira Lewis Jr. was the first player of the Oats era to be drafted when the New Orleans Pelicans selected him with the No. 13 overall pick in the first round in 2020.
Josh Primo followed Lewis as a first-round pick in 2021, going No. 12 overall to the San Antonio Spurs. That same year, Herbert Jones became the second Alabama player drafted by the Pelicans in as many years (second round, No. 35 overall).
J.D. Davison was a late pick in 2022 and was recently given a standard two-year contract by the Boston Celtics after winning G League MVP honors. In 2023, Brandon Miller tied Antonio McDyess as the highest-drafted player (No. 2 overall) in Alabama basketball history. Noah Clowney followed Miller in the first round at No. 21 overall to the Brooklyn Nets.
With Labaron Philon announcing in late May that he was withdrawing from the NBA Draft and returning to Alabama for his sophomore season, it leaves the number of Crimson Tide players available in this year's class at three: guard Mark Sears, forward Grant Nelson and big man Clifford Omoruyi. The three joined Philon players invited to this year's draft combine in Chicago.
The NBA Draft will consist of two rounds with 59 total selections. Duke guard Cooper Flagg is the runaway favorite to be the No. 1 overall pick. The draft will begin Wednesday, June 25 from Barclay's Center in Brooklyn and will be televised on ABC and ESPN beginning at 7 p.m. CT.
Here's where the national media outlets have Sears, Nelson and Omoruyi ranked among the top 100 draft-eligible prospects, as well as any mock drafts, on the final weekend before the 2025 NBA Draft.
USA TODAY Sports analyst projects two Alabama players will be taken in 2025 NBA draft
In terms of an actual mock draft, For The Win's Bryan Kalbrosky lists Sears and Nelson as second-round picks in his latest projections. Kalbrosky sees Sears going 45th overall to the Chicago Bulls, with Nelson being the final player taken at No. 59 by the Houston Rockets.
Yahoo Sports NBA Draft analyst has Mark Sears as second-round pickup
Yahoo Sports' Kevin O'Connor has Sears as the only Alabama player on his NBA Draft big board. O'Connor's latest mock draft has Sears being selected with the 57th overall pick (third from last) by the Orlando Magic.
O'Connor describes Sears as a "clutch college star who rains shots from everywhere behind an advanced array of ball-handling moves." Sears' downside, at least according to O'Connor, is that he was "a pint-sized leader, and so often those players get torched on defense at the next level, shrinking them to bit-player status."
Still, the Yahoo Sports analyst argued in favor of Sears going to the Magic:
"Why not? Sears might be tiny, but the Magic could surround him with length and versatility."
ESPN ranking of Alabama players eligible for NBA Draft
ESPN unveiled its final big board rankings of the top 100 draft prospects on Saturday. NBA Draft analyst Jonathan Givony ranks the three Alabama players in this order:
CBS Sports has Grant Nelson as Alabama's highest-ranked NBA draft prospect in 2025
CBS Sports' full draft prospect rankings favor Nelson over Sears as the Alabama player most likely to be drafted Wednesday night.
The Athletic
The Athletic's Sam Vecente (subscription required) breaks down the top 100 draft prospects into eight tiers. Tier 1 players are defined as "All-NBA" talent, while Tier 8 players are listed as "two-ways, stashes and exhibit 10s." An Exhibit 10 contract is a one-year, minimum salary agreement that isn't guarantee.

Houston Rockets have second-best NBA title odds at sportsbooks after Kevin Durant trade

Before Game 7 of this year's NBA Finals tipped off, the NBA world was stunned by a Kevin Durant blockbuster deal, sending him to the Houston Rockets for Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the No. 10 pick in next week's 2025 NBA draft and five second-round picks. It also sent a shockwave through the odds board at sportsbooks, as the Rockets moved from the 12-1 range to around +750 to win the 2025-26 NBA championship. Those are the consensus second-best odds behind the Oklahoma City Thunder, who are well ahead of any other team at +230. Advertisement "Good trade for Phoenix, adding Jalen Green and the 10th pick is the right direction," Jeff Sherman, vice president of risk at the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook told Yahoo Sports via text message. "We lowered Houston from 12-1 to +900 just based on perception. They should be in the mix no doubt, I just like the return for Phoenix better than what the Rockets got in a 37-year-old they have to extend." The New York Knicks (+900), Indiana Pacers (+950) and Cleveland Cavaliers (11-1) had the next-best consensus title odds at sportsbooks. "Having someone who can score in the half court was exactly what Houston was lacking all season, and it cost them dearly in the playoffs," Thomas Gable, sportsbook director at The Borgata in Atlantic City (a BetMGM book) told Yahoo Sports via text. "While this will be Durant's 18th season, he can still generate offense in the half court, even if he doesn't get to the basket as much as he used to. He should help a very young Rockets team, even if it's only a short stint." Advertisement Sherman and other oddsmakers did have Houston as the second-best team in the West in their power ratings, but cautioned the ranking was simply as of today's trade, noting, for example, if San Antonio traded for Giannis Antetokounmpo that could vault them to No. 2. "We slightly lowered the Rockets' title odds," Jeff Benson, director of sportsbook operations at Circa Sports said via direct message on X. "They upgraded and didn't give up a ton, especially the good young guys." The +750 odds are the best for the Rockets since the 2019 season, per Sports Odds History, when Houston was +700.

Kevin Durant stunned to find out he was traded to Houston Rockets

The trade of All-Star forward Kevin Durant from the Phoenix Suns to the Houston Rockets came as a surprise to many NBA observers – including Durant himself. The four-time scoring champion and 2014 league MVP was on stage for an interview session on the final day of Fanatics Fest in New York City when he found out he was being dealt to Houston. In return, the Suns will receive Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the No. 10 pick in the 2025 draft and five second-round picks, USA TODAY Sports has confirmed. Even Durant wasn't sure the news was real. BREAKING: Kevin Durant was traded to the Houston Rockets while he was ON STAGE at Fanatics had no clue and even asked if it was his first reaction to being traded: 'We're gonna see man, we're gonna see.' "We're gonna see man," Durant said. "We're gonna see." This marks the third time in his career Durant has been traded. The Golden State Warriors traded him and a first-round draft pick to the Brooklyn Nets in July 2019 for Treveon Graham, Shabazz Napier and D'Angelo Russell. The Nets sent him to Phoenix in February 2023 as part of a four-team blockbuster with the Milwaukee Bucks and Indiana Pacers.

Phillies rumors: Dave Dombrowski rival makes confident trade deadline prediction

The post Phillies rumors: Dave Dombrowski rival makes confident trade deadline prediction appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Philadelphia Phillies have been attempting to get the most out of their core for some time now, and one rival executive is expecting their front office to be particularly busy ahead of this summer's trade deadline. Advertisement A recent story from ESPN's Buster Olney highlighted Phillies president of baseball operations, Dave Dombrowski as one of the MLB executives under the most pressure. According to the insider, one of Dombrowski's contemporaries envisions Philadelphia being active. 'He's been through this plenty of times before,' one of his peers said. 'He'll make deals. He always does.' Philadelphia chose not to deal right-hander Andrew Painter last summer when Garret Crochet was available, but may choose to deal him now, given they have already added young arms such as Jesus Luzardo and Christopher Sanchez to their rotation over the past few years. Painter was recently promoted to Triple-A and could be an asset that helps Dombrowski grant the Phillies the needed bullpen help. One of the club's most effective relievers, Jose Alvarado, may return from his PED suspension before the regular season concludes, but will be ineligible for the postseason. Advertisement As a result, Philadelphia will likely need reinforcements to go along with Matt Strahm, Orion Kerkering, and others. The Phillies' bullpen currently holds a 4.50 ERA, one of the worst marks in the sport, and slightly worse than the middle-of-the-road 3.94 ERA that the group posted in 2024. Despite this, the Phillies were key contenders last season. They finished the campaign with a 95-67 record, good enough for a National League East crown. While they were dismantled by the Mets in the NLDS, the core of Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, and Trea Turner still holds the kind of postseason experience that could make for a special run. Dombrowski's sense of urgency could potentially raise the core's ceiling and help prevent another letdown this October. A solid bullpen is a key component of any championship run, especially in a crowded field such as this season's National League.
