Delhi Metro achieves tunnelling breakthrough on Golden Line corridor
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has achieved a major construction milestone with a successful tunnelling breakthrough at Tughlakabad Railway Colony station on the upcoming Golden Line, part of Phase 4 of the metro expansion.According to a DMRC statement, the tunnel connects Maa Anandmayee Marg to Tughlakabad Railway Colony on the Tughlakabad-Aerocity corridor. The breakthrough was achieved by a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) after completing a 792-metre stretch in the presence of Delhi Health and Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh, DMRC Managing Director Dr Vikas Kumar and other senior officials, it said.
advertisementThe corporation said TBMs are designed to bore through various soil and rock layers, while minimising disruption to the surface. They are especially effective in urban settings and have been used extensively in previous metro phases.
DMRC said the tunnel, located at an average depth of 18 metres, is one of two parallel tunnels being built for up and down movement on the corridor. The breakthrough on the second tunnel is expected by July 2025.A total of 566 tunnel rings, each with an inner diameter of 5.8 metres, were installed using the Earth Pressure Balancing Method (EPBM), the statement said. The precast concrete segments used in the tunnel lining were manufactured at a mechanised casting yard in Mundka and steam-cured for early strength.DMRC said the ground movement was carefully monitored during the tunnelling to avoid any surface settlement under existing structures.advertisementUnder Phase 4, 40.1 km of underground metro lines are being constructed, with the Tughlakabad-Aerocity corridor accounting for 19.3 km of that stretch, it added.The latest development marks another step forward in the ongoing expansion of the Delhi Metro network, aiming to enhance connectivity and ease urban transportation challenges in the national capital, it said.Must Watch

Delhi Infra Push: Metro, Road Projects Fast-Tracked To Ease Traffic, Curb Pollution
Last Updated: Significant progress has been made on Delhi Metro extension plans and road infrastructure projects, which are expected to ease traffic congestion and improve daily commute For the last several years, Delhi's infrastructure projects were caught in bureaucratic red tape and political tussles between multiple agencies, which not just delayed some critical plans but stalled a few. However, with a political alignment between the Centre and the city government, the long-pending projects are finally gaining momentum. In the last few weeks, significant progress has been made on Delhi Metro extension plans and road infrastructure projects which are expected to ease traffic congestion and improve daily commutes in the coming months and years. Golden Line Making Swift Progress In February, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) achieved a breakthrough at IGNOU Metro Station with the completion of an underground tunnel between Chhatarpur Mandir and IGNOU Station on the Tughlakabad-Aerocity corridor, known as the Golden Line. Within weeks, in March, DMRC announced that it has completed the tunnelling work on the deepest underground stretch of Phase 4. The same month, the DMRC also achieved a breakthrough at Vasant Kunj Metro Station with the completion of an underground tunnel between Kishangarh and Vasant Kunj Station. Earlier this month, DMRC achieved another construction milestone on the route with the completion of an underground tunnel between Maa Anandmayee Marg and Tughlakabad Railway colony station. Now, in the coming weeks, another breakthrough is expected on the Golden Line for a parallel circular tunnel. The Golden Line is scheduled for completion by mid-2026. Earlier this month, the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways approved six major infrastructure projects in Delhi and for most of these, bids for preparation of Detailed Project Report (DPR) have been invited. Speaking to News18, an official from the ministry said across the length and breadth of the city, these projects will ease traffic bottlenecks in the coming few months. This included a 20-km signal-free elevated corridor between AIIMS and Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport that will further connect Gurgaon. This project is expected to cost around Rs 5,000 crore. The ministry will build this new corridor between AIIMS and Nelson Mandela Marg in Vasant Kunj. Another 5km signal-free tunnel is planned between Nelson Mandela Road and Shiv Murti–Mahipalpur intersection at the Dwarka Expressway. This is expected to cost around Rs 3,500 crore. In addition, the ministry also approved building an interchange at Kalindi Kunj intersection near Okhla Barrage where the Delhi-Noida Road meets Agra Canal Road. This 500m road will cost around Rs 500 crore. The feasibility study was completed for this section in 2022. Another 17-kilometer road is planned between Urban Extension Road II (UER 2) and the upcoming Delhi-Dehradun expressway near Tronica City at a cost of Rs 3,300 crore. Earlier this month, a 2.5-km tunnel on the Delhi stretch of Dwarka Expressway, connecting Dwarka to the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway, was opened for traffic, reducing travel time between Manesar and Palam Airport to 30 minutes. Barrier-free road projects are not just vital for easing traffic but are also crucial for improving air quality in a city that frequently battles severe pollution. According to a senior official from the ministry, these projects are expected to reduce vehicular idling and streamline traffic flow—both critical to curbing the city's alarming pollution levels. 'Every minute saved on the road translates to fewer emissions and less fuel consumption," they said. CM for lower amalgamation charges, green bldg expansion
New Delhi: Chief minister Rekha Gupta has directed the task force on infrastructure reforms to review and rationalise the high amalgamation charges for commercial plots in the city. She also asked during the meeting on Saturday that the framework be extended to include residential plots, aiming to create a more harmonised and investor-friendly policy. She said on Saturday that there was a need to effectively implement a single-window approval system to make doing business in Delhi seamless, efficient and investment-friendly. Chairing a high-level meeting attended by cabinet minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, senior officials from MCD, DDA, DMRC, registrar of co-operative societies, and representatives of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the chief minister laid strong emphasis on easing construction-related procedures and improving inter-agency coordination. Among the key proposals was the single-window clearance system, standardised development control norms across civic bodies, and time-bound approvals for large-scale projects. Gupta also reviewed the green building policy, directing that it be broadened beyond commercial structures to cover residential properties as well. "Sustainable development must reflect in every part of Delhi — homes and high-rises alike," she said, instructing the task force to design a more inclusive framework. She stressed the need of eliminating bureaucratic hurdles for entrepreneurs. The task force has been asked to automate and simplify existing business-related procedures and submit a report recommending digital reforms with specific timelines. The task force presented a report which included several significant recommendations for the overall development of the city. The key proposals included the single-window clearance system, standardised development control norms across all agencies, and time-bound approvals for large-scale projects. The 10-point report also recommended a reduction in amalgamation charges for commercial plots, no requirement of revised layout plans in MCD areas, having a green building policy to incentivise sustainable infrastructure development, rationalisation of property tax, optimum utilisation of land allotted to DMRC, and reduction in FAR for hotel and other commercial plots. The task force also proposed that slum redevelopment should be encouraged under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The chief minister stated that the task force has to submit a report on facilitating ease of doing business.
